US presidential candidate Jill Stein said students are being “brutalised” at pro-Palestine protests in universities across the country by American police officers who are trained in crowd control techniques by the Israeli military, in an act she says is an “assault on democracy”.
Speaking outside Columbia University, she praised students for protesting and “standing up” for all Americans and their right to free speech. She said students are defending “our right to protest this genocide that is being committed in our name”.
Stein criticised Israel’s war on Gaza and the US’ unconditional military funding to Israel. “We must support the right of the Palestinian people to freedom, justice and dignity,” she said, reiterating the findings of the International Court of Justice that there is a plausible case for genocide in Gaza.
