@raycorey He still cost the team silverware this season i.e FAcup passing to Giggs and the next season he was bad in Europe, first in Champions league made bad mistake vs Barca which relegated them to UEFAcup where they reached the final and he misses in the shootout losing to Galatasaray. After 1997/98 where Vieira & Arsenal cashed in on RoyKeane's season long injury & 2 lucky wins vs ManUtd, they won nothing for 3 straight seasons. Arsenal were always eliminated in the champions league in either the group stage, last 16 or quarter-finals was the furthest they ever got at least until Vieira left, he played in 7 Champions league seasons with Arsenal. Vieira never even played in a champions league semi-final his entire career at any club.

I've heard a lot of people say this is the best Arsenal team even over the invincible side. I wasn't watching football then so haven't seen enough week in week out so be able to say. Hard to imagine this team was better offensively than the invincibles (I realise they scored 6 in this game haha but I mean overall)

Although it turned out to work in the end because of Henry, Arsenal were absolutely mad to not to re-sign Anelka back in 2008 when he was at Bolton. He went on to do an amazing job at Chelsea and help deliver big trophies. Yet another one of Wenger's many mistakes post 2005.

Yep they were heavier. Not coming out of the factory - but they absorbed moisture and were much heavier in practice. The pitch is also slower, since it is natural grass and not watered before each half. The boots, too, are heavier. It made it much harder to retain possession and avoid mistakes, but easier to play through balls, weighed passes and such.

But still couldn't win anything for ages.

@@mnb9162 Because RoyKeane was injured all season and missed the 2 lucky Arsenal wins vs ManUtd which sneaked Arsenal the 1998 title but then ManUtd again won 4 of the next 5 seasons (for the 2nd time in the PL era, they've since done it a 3rd time 2006/07 to 2010/11). From 1998/99 to 2000/01 Arsenal won nothing.

@@mnb9162 They got lucky in 97/98 as previously mentioned but you have hindsight knowledge that Arsenal would be trophyless this 1998/99 season, again trophyless the season after where ManUtd won the PL by 18 points and again trophyless the season after that where ManUtd effectively won it with months to spare and beat Arsenal 6-1 at OldTrafford in the process. Plus Arsenal hadn't "just" won it, this was close to a whole year later. They actually had "just" been eliminated in the FAcup99 by ManUtd where ManUtd basically beat Arsenal 3 times, first game RoyKeane goal bizarrely disallowed 0-0 went to a replay where ManUtd took the lead (another brilliant goal) and were cruising until a Bergkamp deflected lucky goal made it 1-1 and RoyKeane was sent off so ManUtd had to win all over again in extra time with 10men, which they did with an iconic goal. Yes being 2nd best out of 20 teams is still quite good but Arsenal weren't ever the best team in the Premier league era until ManUtd had just won 7 out of 9 PL titles and should've been 6 out of the last 6 from 1995/96 to 2000/01 but it was still 5 out of the last 6 and then Arsenal lost that title defence straight away in 2003 despite 2 Thierry Henry offside goals in a winner takes all game vs ManUtd that season but it finished 2-2 (with 2 legitimate ManUtd goals).
