Midland Railway fly-through: Bakewell to Buxton, including the Monsall Trail

3 жыл бұрынWe follow the alignment of the former Midland rail route from Bakewell to Buxton. This includes the spectacular gorge of the Derbyshire Wye, where the trackbed forms the Monsall Trail. Closer to Buxton, the route is occupied by a working mineral line. The final few hundred yards, and the terminus station, Buxton Midland, are now vanished under roads and car parks, alongside the present, formerly LNWR, Buxton station. All imagery is generated from Google Earth.

This must have been a beautiful line when it was in operation - both for passengers and train drivers. Such short-sightedness on the part of politicians and bureaucrats. What a waste! The engineering of this line is fantastic - think of all the man hours and men it took to blast through those hills. It should never have been closed, and should still be running today....along with the Woodhead route, and the entire GCR. So sad that we destroyed so much of our Victorian railway heritage in the name of progress.

I love railways but if it was losing money then there really was no sense in keeping it running. At least they left the trackbed so we can still enjoy the old route.
