I remember catching this film back-to-back with Creep (2004) on TV years ago. My first impression of Mahogany had me thinking that he was just something pretending to be human. His silence, the suit and the bag, and the way that he carried himself just leaned a little into the uncanny valley, for me. I was only slightly disappointed that he wasn't some supernatural entity in the end.
@AllisonIsLivid
@AllisonIsLivid Жыл бұрын
I think it's better all around that he IS human. Strictly speaking. It makes his disciplined obedience and cruelty more appalling, and that it's in service to actual cannibal ghouls is really what makes the movie work. If he was physically one of the ghouls, he'd be a nothing villain that could be thrown away. His death wouldn't necessitate another human fucking being to take his place. But he's not explicitly a monster. He's just a man who serves them all the suffering and pain they could ever eat. And he does it in a sharp suit, and clean haircut. Like most people who exist to service the ghouls eating away at the possibility of a compassionate society.

It’s fun that they included Clive Barker’s art in the gallery scene! The first thing I knew him from was actually a fantasy series he’d written called Abarat, and if you’re in the market to read it, I highly recommend trying to find the version that has all of Barker’s illustrations - they really add to the surreal tone.

I think the “being around serial killers turns you into being a serial killer” trope is more based around the fact that irl, serial killers actually do show a lot of interest in other serial killers before becoming one. There was Criminology major who got caught being a serial killer fairly recently, for example. So it’s less “turned into” and more “you always wanted to be a serial killer but it never really manifested until you met one” type deal.

I love this movie. There's more of an explanation in the short story it's based on, but from what I remember it just makes it even sillier. I think the monsters where people from the ruling class that had gotten so old they had to eat human flesh to live but they were still pretty much running everything. It's a very weird little story but I read the whole volume of the Books of Blood that it was in so there's a lot of weird shit muddled up in my head. You should give Rawhead Rex a go. Barker hated the movie so much he decided he wasn't going to let anyone fuck with his work again and that's how we got Hellraiser.
@StephenLeaSheppard
@StephenLeaSheppard Жыл бұрын
My understanding of the story behind the title is that Clive Barker made it a condition of the licensing agreement that any adaptation of his short story into a movie had to keep the full title. The brief period of time in which it was going to be changed was the studio trying to break that agreement, and then it was changed back when Clive Barker's lawyer cleared his throat and pointed meaningfully at the contract.
@VeganAtheistWeirdo
@VeganAtheistWeirdo Жыл бұрын
I like this story. I don't even care if it turns out to be apocryphal. Also, why the fuck does someone buy rights to a Clive Barker short story and then try to, I don't know, sanitize it? You know what I remembered the most about this short story, what really stuck with me all these years? The title. It is perfect. Was that supposed to get it on more screens or something? I swear, people with power have no fucking brains left.
@StephenLeaSheppard
@StephenLeaSheppard Жыл бұрын
The sad answer is that Clive Barker's name is perceived as having selling power, because people associate "Clive Barker" with "Horror movies people have said good things about," so studios want to make Clive Barker adaptations because in today's media saturated environments, with so many other things people could be doing with their time (video games, KZfaq video essays, etc.), it's really hard to get an audience to care enough about your movie to give it any attention at all, even setting aside the issue of whether or not the movie will be good. But a title like The Midnight Meat Train is *not* perceived as having selling power, because, uh, it's kind of funny and weird and studios assume that's going to be off-putting. (They're not wrong.) With a finite number of Clive Barker stories to adapt, and an even smaller number with structures suited to adaptation, you eventually end up with a situation where the studio goes "We would like to make a horror movie, what do we have the license for? Oh, a Clive Barker story where a guy kills some people on a train and also there's another guy obsessed with him and also also, there's some monsters? Cool. What's it called? Okay, we'll just change that... wait, we CAN'T change that?"

I usually took the whole "serial killer makes you one too" trope to be either 1. people who willingly spend time around serial killers are people who relate to them/their fascinations and thus are more likely to be intrigued by it themselves. 2. serial killers can just, like, tell someone else is a serial killer in the making. Both of these are still bad, the first kind of suggesting that anyone intrigued by horror or interested in studying these figures (even to look for means of preventing them) are thereby monstrous themselves. The second kind suggesting that serial killers are either supernatural in nature (irresponsible) or are basically something similar to neurodivergent (WOEFULLY IRRESPONSIBLE) with the ability to 'sense' others. But Serial Killer fiction is also about pushing boundaries and questioning them so I don't expect responsibility from it myself.

I watched this years ago and the only impression it left on my brain was getting me and my friend to BS while high about a hypothetical "midnight diarrhea train" movie for an hour years back. We developed lore on a cursed train where people are separated based on their proclivity towards diarrhea or constipation and are sacrificed to power the infinitely running titular train. Initially pitted against one another, the day can only be saved if my self-insert heroine main character suffering from IBS can bring them together to stop the evil conductor scientist Dr. Scheisseanger. I look forward to watching this and remembering how the film goes, and seeing how much I subconsciously borrowed from the source material. I always felt that the whole point of the "Following a serial killer is making me more of a serial killer" wasn't about a normal person being converted but more like that Community bit "This better not awaken anything in me" I always felt it was supposed to be the main character realizing they are being pulled into the same circles as this serial killer because they have similar, innate interests that drew them in the same way - and the point is them questioning whether they too had this killer instincts in them the whole time or whether this is wake up call.

If someone had told me this was an adaptation of a Clive Barker story, directed by Ryuhei Kitamura (who directed one of my favorite kaiju films, Godzilla: Final Wars), I would've seen it sooner. The cinematography was great, the special FX were great. It actually felt more like a Mortal Kombat movie to me than the actual film versions of MK, at least in terms of an overall sinister feel, and the over-the-top fatalities. Amazing soundtrack as well! I think it has an old 70s/80s era artsy horror vibe. Like, tbh, the twist reminds me of something out of a very old Hellblazer or maybe an edgier Sandman comic. I so appreciate you Mildred, for watching weird, batshit horror movies that my constitution is far too delicate for and telling us about them. Gonna be thinking about that twist for days. It's my kinda spooky nonsense. Definitely need to start getting bad into the habit of reading.

I vividly remember playing TF2 as a high-schooler. Another player was talking about how she watched this movie with her partner and everyone in the server immediately assumed she was talking about a pr0n0.

I’m kinda freaking out rn ngl because up until this point, for years I have been operating under the presupposition that the first time I heard of this movie was from a Scaredy Cats video. So, my life is a lie, ig

I genuinely did not see that twist coming. When you mentioned a big twist I was just thinking it would be that the midnight meat train feed the new York Upper class and connects it all to the art gallery fancy stuff. But subterranean monster creatures? Nope. Never would have guessed.

You mentioned the end going in a totally different way than anything you could have anticipated. This made me think of another movie, which isn’t a horror movie btw, called Sorry To Bother You. If you haven’t seen it, I can’t recommend it enough as it has a completely bonkers third act that you could never predict and even while watching it you’re wondering if you’re currently experiencing an absurdist fever dream.
