LYRICS:
I've seen faces in the window
I've seen faces in the street
They walk and talk of nothing
I've known many restless summers
The sand dunes I imagine
A place without a postcard
Flower people were so beautiful
But straight and loud's the way
Good luck the beatnik spirit
The talk of politicians
The sentences of cynics
Are the sentences of childhood
They're all talking shit to me
Out-talked by the mass media
To pay the bills it lies
And the lies we eat for breakfast
Brave faces face the boardroom
The oak stained walls fall silent
They leave lined with defeat
And they got those tears in their eyes
Well it makes no sense to me
Why don't they understand
We're so ordinary too
I saw the exits closing now
Pain and passion's my point of view
Well there's nothing like the truth
I've seen men that have been marked out
Ruled out by grim assassins
They fell hard on instant replay
And I'm never going there
Well the place I see so much better
Cos it makes no sense to me
I saw the exits closing now
Burning mountains, burning paper
Burning all around and later

I love that the guitars are separated in stereo; it makes it easier to examine the brilliant interplay of these two great guitarists, whose styles are so well-integrated that it's sometimes difficult for me to discern which one's playing what. Thank you!

One of the best guitar duos of all time for me. Jim Moginie is a brilliant songwriter. Like you say so many of their songs have this fantastic guitar interplay between them.

Couldn't agree more! What Keith Richards called the ancient art of weaving, which he practised with Mick Taylor. No lead guitarist here - Moginie and Rotsey were/are the perfect duo, as you both have said.

Yes very true mate, and great comment, listen through headphones and you can hear which guitar legend is playing what. Very few bands have two lead guitars equally as good as each other. One of many reasons why the Oils are so great.

i always loved this song, haven't listened to it for 30 years... Coming back to this live version, it's an incredible piece of music, even better than i remembered. Many layers, powerful lyrics, it goes through all these different stages... plus the stage chemistry of that band. Thanks ABC and triple J for this (i missed the line tho, "They're all talking *** to me")

If I/We/You dig deep there is/are a load/lot of Oil vids and concerts in the archive. Never too late to appreciate some of the best Aussie rock of our time. Listening to some of their interviews of the time it's like they just loved jamming in studios or garages or wherever and determined this was the best of the best, and didn't want to ever suck up to the industry, just write, play and perform. Cumulative result spoke/speaks for themselves. Oils = honest pure music and messages.

I bought a lot of albums (300+) in my teens and early twenties (the 80s) and the only ones I still play regularly are early Oils, Chisel, and Floyd. (early Weddings, Parties, Anything sometimes get a look in, too.) Although, some Ozzie bands were not that big overseas, they were world-class acts and great live shows. Back then, I don't think Ozzie bands could make it if they couldn't deliver a great live show. After all these years, I am still finding gems in the arrangements, chord progressions, song structures, and drumming of early Oils. Truly one of the most talented bands on the planet.

The desperate emotion of this song is one of the main reasons I love Place Without a Postcard so much, probably my favourite Oils record, The band was running out of money and running on empty. The desperation is clear to hear on this album, and encapsulated by this brilliant song. Desperation drove them to new creative peaks with 10-1, and their last chance at a hit sent them into the musical and creative stratosphere...

What I can’t understand is how the useless commercial radio stations never promoted Midnight Oil masterpieces like Place Without A Postcard, there was not one weak song, they are all bangers.
