I swear the creator of this movie got his inspiration from a Goosebumps book. Seriously, it's almost the exact same plot as Phantom of the Auditorium!

That's what I was thinking of when I heard about it too. The irony is that the guy who directed this went to the same film school as I did and had a preview screening for it while I was at the school. It was going on the same time as one of my classes though so I missed out. Now I'm glad that I did.

Huh, that's kinda cool. Hopefully bad films aren't common in your school's history. ;) On a separate note, I'd actually consider getting this movie. Unfortunately--or probably fortunately--I'm too cheap to invest in a film that I'm only getting to laugh at.

SuperWillHatch The Sixth Sense was done great though. That being said I'm not that kind of person who gets mad when a lot of plot elements, themes, or etc. is similar to a previous work though. I'm glad The Gallows used that idea of students being haunted by a high school legend. I just wish it would have been done better though.

***** Oh, I agree. I mean, shit, I actually like it when filmmakers wear their inspirations on their sleeves and admit to "Oh, this inspired me, and so did this...". There are only so many story ideas to begin with, and if you first see that storyline playing out on Goosebumps or something, more power to you.

Having been in theatre, it actually is not unheard of for a functioning gallows to be built for a show that requires it, HOWEVER, the amount of safety and precautions taken with this have to be enormous. The actor is usually supported by a harness that is hidden and attached to their back, holding the actor up so the rope can't be pulled taut. Even then there are other measures that are often taken (hidden extra length of rope to make sure that if something does go wrong, they will fall safely to the ground rather than be hung) Theatre can be a dangerous business lol

@@steveom5479one explanation for the Macbeth thing, according to one of my high school English teachers, is that the theatre company puts on a production of that play when they're in financial troubles because it's popular and brings in money.

Weird thing is, I had a similar plot idea a while ago. Two teens hang themselves from the rafters of the school auditorium in the middle of a play to escape their dull teenage lives, only to find that they're ghosts doomed to forever haunt the school. Enraged at having to spend the rest of their existance enduring the lives they tried to escape, the ghosts start killing students, teachers and administrators in an effort to get the school shut down and thus end their exposure to other teens. Sort of imagine a couple of school shooters if they were evil ghosts and you can get the horror. Certainly a lot scarier than an invisible understudy.

+Eric Emigh Sounds interesting. But maybe the story could explore more issues and horror elements if the protagonists were the successful suicide atempters? It would be more scary imo if you followed the dead students horror of being forced to live there day to day.

Wait...so...basically the crazy woman brainwashed her daughter her entire life to know exactly who her father was (my brain can't and won't even comprehend the stupidity of a ghost impregnatinng the mom) and get her to hop on board the crazy train on this revenge thing? Make the daughter pose as a high school student around the same time as all these kids happen to be seniors?? THEN when the school just HAPPENEd to perform the same play that Charlie was killed (( seriously what the actual fuck in what warped universe would that actually happen?!!)) she would help Charlie kill al these kids?! I can't even with the plot holes.... All that aside I think the biggest problem I have with this is how the trailers marketed this movie. They basically compared it with some of the greatest horror movie icons like Freddy and Jason. Like really?! REALLY?!! No no nope sit the hell down Gallows

This is another movie like My Bloody Valentine set in a small town written by someone who didn't grow up in a small town. Everybody knows everybody's business. All these kids would have been together in school from kindergarten on, known each other's parents on sight. Being raised by her loony Mom, the daughter could probably end up like Carrie White.

+inlovewithJLT And do the schools then put JCS back on? Besides, even if a school did put "The Gallows" back on, you can be damn sure they wouldn't construct a functional gallows again. Although I guess the ghost could have done that, but still.
@inlovewithJLT
@inlovewithJLT 9 жыл бұрын
Eric Emigh I don't know. My point wasn't really about them doing the show again (which I agree is unlikely and foolish) but more in response to them saying "Who makes a functional gallows for a play?" It's not about the set piece being fully functional, it's about whatever safety was supposed to be in place not working properly.

Well on that weird ghost dad idea I mean if the story happens in 2013 and if the whole pregnancy started right before Charlie died that would take nine months right there out. Maybe she got held back a year or two? I mean that makes as much sense as it possibly can because seventeen or eighteen are common for graduation. Seriously if they pushed the date it happened like into 2012 or something it would have made much more sense. I mean its a found footage movie they could do it whenever.

the original PA movie had the jump scare ending, cops shooting her ending, and there is also one with her slitting her throat. Daughter and Mom at the end look like Carrie and Mrs. White in DePalma's movie...which I think was intentional. @shortpettite
@shortpettite 9 жыл бұрын
To me t's not so much a plot hole. One they could just not recognize her because she likely moved away after Charlie died. It did say no one knows what happened to her which to me implies she left town. Could have found out pregnant shortly after and lets just say at most she is 18 when she graduates (most graduations around June). Depending on when her birthday is she may be 19 by the time her baby is born. By then it would be 94. The girl could just as easily changed her name before moving back to town not wanting the attention or to be found out. She likely enrolled the daughter in school (doesn't really matter a what point) until she got into drama and suggested redoing this play which if I recall she did suggest. Charlie in all likelihood was not haunting the school the entire time he had no reason to really. I think the old girlfriend tried contacted him when she came back to town a la ouji also could be because they were using the same gallows. I think it highly unlikely school build that big of a prop and just destroyed it. It likely was dismantled and put into storage.

I am friends with the directors because this was filmed in my hometown. Here's why it was R. It was R simply because New Line wanted it to be R. The directors are both LDS/Mormon and did NOT want this to be R, because as a general rule, they don't watch R movies. They fought and fought and fought to get this PG-13, but New Line decided "It's R because horror movies do better at the box office when they're R.'' As much as you don't like this movie, joke's on you because the directors just signed some deals with Netflix and Amazon Prime!

When the lead bails, Charlie carries on with the play and kills himself to spite his girl for cheating. Charlie visits the girlfriend till she goes nuts, and now she raises her daughter to help him get revenge.

I think one of the things that really did this in for me is that if we're going by the assumption that the movie verse is set in our time, Fake hangings would have been perfected [I assume someone did some research before they let that poor sap put his head inside the noose] Heck, A winterguard show did this successfully what like 5 years after (?) at WGI. Its called Dante's Inferno look it up. Also, Who would let the theater kids do that in the first place? where'd they get the funding did they steal from the band kids??

I don't know much about fake hangings in plays but I've heard of a few Halloween attractions that incorporate that kind of idea, and in one instance the actor ended up accidentally hanging himself for real.

To be fair, the girl might have been adopted, but what the hell do I know, this movie sucked, I saw on on demand and hated it, and this is coming from a guy who really likes Found Footage movies

what got to me was the scene when charlie killed whats her face. thing is, i can't look at hooded figures in movies. i think it's because i grew up watching The Fly (original version) and if you seen that movie, you know exactly what i mean.

Damn you guys were hard on this film. I kind of liked it for being an easy watch with a moderately scary ending.

This was absolutely repulsive filmmaking. Whomever directed and wrote this should never direct another movie ever again. They should be like the director of Red Planet, and just leave the film industry forever.

At first I was going to say that Iiked that movie. However, upon further googling, I realized that I was thinking of Mission to Mars. Red Planet was indeed awful.

It basically sounds like this movie should be renamed Plotholes the Movie and should actually be rated WGS, which stands for; who gives a shit. I will admit to, that; I have never been a huge fan of the found footage genre.
