LECTURE 23:
Here the concept of expressing fluctuating stresses in terms of midrange and alternating components is presented and explained. The Goodman failure criteria is presented as a simple technique of estimating the stress thresholds at which the life of parts can no longer be expected to be infinite. An example problem is completed in which an axially loaded connecting rod with a pin-in-hole stress concentration is evaluated for a fatigue factor of safety using the Goodman criteria for infinite life. Marin factors are used to estimate the fully corrected endurance limit. The factor of safety guarding against first-cycle yielding is also evaluated. The load line is plotted on midrange-alternating stress axes along with the Goodman and Langer failure lines. The factors of safety found are inspected relative to the graphical representation.

Really great explanation. One of the best if not the best! Any lectures on Failure modes (Bolted joints and Threaded fasteners), Elastic instability (Buckling of columns), Pressurised cylinders (pressure vessels, compound cylinders) just wondering?? You have this way of teaching that makes this subject looks more interesting to the viewers and want to know more. Pretty sure there is this sentence in every comment "I wish I had you as a lecturer." Excellent and wonderful job

Hi, what are the practical sources of fatigue loads in rotor components. I'm assuming unbalance during rotation could be one of the source of HCF. Likewise, what could be the source for LCF?? Thanks in advance.

Professor, I have some problems and misunderstanding. (For infinite life)In case of fully reversing load, sigma max and sigma a is within endurance limit. When the load is repeated in nature, sigma max can go beyond Se(up to Sy)and sigma a should be within Se? Why should sigma a decrease, when sigma m increases in magnitude?

39:10 "We want to take the portion of it where the area is minimum". Doesn't the stress concentration factor already take into account the fact that there's a hole there? Shouldn't you then just plug in the nominal area of the rod, instead of the area lessened by the hole diameter?
@TheBomPE
@TheBomPE 6 жыл бұрын
No, you want to use the reduced area at the hole. The stress concentration factor accounts for localized increase in stress caused by the discontinuity in the continuum of the material (the hole). It does not account for the reduction in area due to the presence of the hole. You have to do that as I show in the example.
