Miele TwinDos DIY refillable detergent & fabric softener canisters (1/2)

This video shows how to make refillable Miele TwinDos canisters for the detergent & fabric softener slots.
Tools used:
- Sewing needle & thread
- Scissors
- Power drill & 12mm drillbit (or another way to make a 12mm hole in plastic)
- Carpenter's knife (or another way to smooth out the drilled hole)
At around 4m40s in the video I screwed up and drilled through the bottom of the canister, which would have caused it to leak. That was easily fixed with some plastic glue & duct tape.
Note that the cap added to the canister is only semi-watertight, I'm careful not to turn them upside down or stand them on their sides. It holds, but I don't really trust it. It's not a problem because there's no reason to ever orient them differently.
It's VERY IMPORTANT when refilling the canisters not to overfill them. They're inserted at an incline into the machine, and the vent hole is in the front, therefore having too much detergent or fabric softener will block the vent hole, and the machine will only be able to suck out a little bit before negative pressure in the canister blocks any further extraction of the soap. See the last 30 seconds or so for the approximate fill limit (the label was custom added with a labeling machine I have).

Just use a smaller funnel and push down on the plunger that is in the spout on the end that is inserted into the washer. You can then pour the detergent into the bottle without cutting any holes. It is easier and if/when the plunger, one way air vent wear out just buy a full detergent bottle and recycle the old. I have used a factory phase one bottle for 1.5 years before the one way air vent stopped working. You will know when it is clogged because the bottle looks like it is getting crushed as the detergent is used. This is due to no air being able to enter the bottle to fill the space that was occupied by the detergent.

No plastic shavings in the reservoir? Maybe using a warm metalbit in the right size? Melt the hole?

I just hoped you didn't drill straight to your enamelled sink! But hey, thanks for this advice. I'll ask hubby to replicate this process. We have Miele Twindos machine coming in next week. - How has this thing here lasted in your use? It's been two years since you filmed this.

After switching from Miele ultraphase to my detergent and conditioner I don't see levels in the conteiners anymore displayed on machine or via Miele app. Do my washing machine will alert me when the containers are empty or I need to check them manualy every time when they go almost empty?

Using the app, go the washer, status tab, tap on a bottle, move the slider back to the top (full) position and hit the save button. The washer will then estimate how much is left in the bottle. If the bottle was only half full then move the slider to half full and click save. Simple.

@@notmethanks816 If you use your own detergents with refilible cartriges it is impossible to set levels. Option is not active. "Fill level not available" If you use Miele's Ultraphase then level option is available
