I'm 65 years old, and when I was a little girl, my daddy's older brother farmed in South Carolina. I remember seeing him, actually took a tiny taste of his soil. Just a touch on the tip of his tongue.

We had an organic certification inspector taste the dirt at my parent's organic dairy. He he tasted it and exclaimed "Mmmm! That's some good organic soil!" As kids, we thought he was just a little off the deep end lol!

Great video! I have depleted mostly clay soil. I have been wondering what I can do to get it to drain and fortify it so that it will produce good yields. I can get my hands on plenty of rabbit manure. That's the way I'm going to go just like my grandfather. He put worms in a rabbit manure catchment bin and used that material to ammend the same soul. His tomatoes were as big as small cantaloupes. Keep up the good work!

I live near the west coast of central Florida, next to a low-lying area, where a marshy creek overflows my side yard with lots of organic silt at times, and the developers put down a clay mix first for the property's foundation, then sand on top with added topsoil for the yards, I'm so confused as to why some things grow well -- and some don't -- all depending where I'm standing (either in my front, back, or either side yard), I now understand why and what to do about it!! Mystery solved!! THANKS!! (Even though the video about broke my brain...lol)

Going no-dig seems a way. Just add 6 inches of compost as a top layer and because you loose 1 inch of level in a year, just add 1 inch of fresh compost every year. I wonder how the fertility evolves during 6 years. It seems to me that the NPK levels should change to some degree after 6 years and affect the fertility. Any ideas?

Lol, my siblings & I use to make mdd balls & mud snakes (Luke calls them ribbons). When you're a poor kid, some times dirt is really fun. Lol Well Luke you hit a HOME RUN again! WoW how awesome this information is for us! I hope you'll hit on more Static Hydroponics. I'm trying my hand at that too. Pepper plant is completely wilted & its yellow spotty leaves are falling off. I use the exact same 3 nutrients from your videos. And Ive tried spraying Calcium (TUMS powederd/water in 1 gal water) on its leaves & added some to the reservoir. Its over 2 ft tall but its going die....though its still growing fruit.

1. What does the red clay soil mean? 2. Is it possible to grow stuff solely in compost? I heard from Dr Elaine that you should always have sand, silt and clay because they are the source of minerals, and organic matter aims to feed microorganisms who mine minerals from sand, clay, silt and pebbles and make them available for plants

Yeah, he wasn't talking literal contractor concrete, but garden 'concrete', as we gardeners know it. Basically a hardpan.

In your video, you were talking about sand, silt and clay and then when you put it in the jar with the water and you were measuring using the centimeters, you switched it and said sand, clay and silt. Did you mean in the jar that it should be sand, silt, and clay?

Thanks Luke! I have been waiting to fix the mess of soil I had brought in last year.. I new I needed to amend so this is what I needed. Thank you. My soil is hard and clay colored .. last time this happened I put on peat and it helped tremendously.

What fantastic information. I planted various bushes in an area that gets loads of sun, where grass struggles to grow. I followed the instructions from a couple master gardeners and I can tell that I didn’t get things right for my poor plants. I am an absolute beginner but amended my soil heavily but something in my mind said it wasn’t right (like I could make a mug out of the pre-amended squishy soil!)...but I planted anyways. I was told to mix in top soil but I gather I should have used compost. The mix hangs onto water, but with temps at nearly 100 degrees for weeks now I hesitate to remove the plants to further amend and cause more transplant stress. I don’t have high hopes for these plants. If they make it or don’t next year I will come equipped with better knowledge. The way you both explain and provide examples is infinitely more helpful than any other source of information I’ve come across.

Interesting, never heard the difference with organic material. I assumed was the silt-loam layer of the triangle. Makes sense though. Never seen the ribbon test either. Great episode and thanks for sharing as usual!

@maruiacancer6 Stay vigilant, learn what you can do on your own to make life changes (diet to stop feeding the growth(s), activity, stress, etc.) to also impact the neoplastic growths if can't only be surgically removed and stay cool, calm and collective. Wishing Godspeed to good, if not great, health as well as healing along the way in the process. Praying for knowledge and wisdom as well. Be safe and take care.

I live in Sacramento, CA, that is The Clay Capitol. I have been mixing potting mix, organics "earth" some sand, & plant food into what I have, where I plant, expanding when & where I can. I would like to ad drip. But cost & time, will that pay off?

I appreciate your videos and have learned much from them. I was able to get some free compost/dirt for my 6' x 3' x 1' raised garden bed. I planted some blueberry bushes in it, but so far I have no blueberries 😢. Any ideas what I can do to get some berries. Zone 6..NE Ohio. Thanks.

Late, but blueberries wont fruit w/o acidic soil. Check pH n get a bag of soil acidifier to amend.

This pretty much end-of-season for 2023 seeds, thus the clearances (helps folks with late crops). 2024 seed will come out beginning early fall, I believe.

OK, I'm looking at the pyramid, and there is no way to reach Loam as I read it. Any of the points in the Loam region are more than 100% total. Can you explain?

Might you be reading the chart wrong? I get loam with e.g. 20% clay, 40% silt and 40% sand. It is important to look at the right side of the scales (e.g. the line you draw for 20%clay ends in the silt scale at 80%. This is only to be able to get the cross points)

I feel like the measuring test is not accurate because your results depend on the size of the jar. If the jar is short and wide then you get smaller numbers as opposed to a jar that is and thin in diameter.

The numbers only matter in relation to each other, you're measuring the percentage of clay/sand/silt.

18:56 This was definitely click-bait. How about a video on free, at-home soil tests for gardens with generous amounts of compost? Is there a balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, et al? That would be fire. 👍🏾
