Imagine having your game be so bad that Capcom actually got up and made Mega Man 11 just so your game wasn't the last of the series' legacy.

I'd feel bad for Inafune if he didn't try to milk a franchise based on a game that hadn't even come out yet, I mean merch, a movie, a tv series, a anime, and a spin off series ... jesus christ dude, how about making a good game first?

@@HenshinFanatic And I'm pretty sure that even if the end results were successful, they wouldn't have been as popular as Megaman for two reasons: brand recognition and Capcom releasing a bunch of new Megaman games, comics, tv shows, maybe even a movie that would have diverted the attention from Mighty N.9, meaning that Inafune would have lost in the end, no matter what.

@@HenshinFanatic That's true, but let's be honest here: there are many people that buy crappy games just because they see that they have the logo and characters of a popular series in it. So in the end they would have gained lots of cash despite tarnishing the characters' image.

Megaman is the only video game franchise that's more pathetic than Sonic the Hedgehog. Both are super tired concepts that were never fleshed out enough to support a 20 year franchise of QUALITY games (anyone can shit out a terrible Sonic and Megaman game, and they often do just that.) Mario does not have this problem because Mario 64 gave the franchise a new lease on life by expanding the possibilities we've seen in Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey. Sonic games didn't evolve Sonic beyond shitty side characters and it's clear what that's done for the franchise. Megaman hasn't evolved the gameplay in decades beyond spin-offs.

Even as a businessman though , he's a bit shit. I've worked in this industry for fourteen years, and let me tell you, there's no such thing as an "ideas factory". I meet a lot of aspiring game devs who all echo that same sentiment: they have a winning concept for a new IP, and if only they could just get their foot in the door, they'd be set for life. But that's just not how it works, and failed campaigns like MN9 highlight that beautifully. Anyone can have a good idea, but it's far rarer to bring that idea to fruition in an efficient and lucrative way. If anything, this just shows how little Inafune really understands business at all. He doesn't grasp western game design all that well (just look at any of his Western releases for proof of that), and alienated all Japanese publishers, so no one's going to give him another chance.

Frizzurd Frizzurd people mess up sometimes from time to time that's life. Inafune messes up. Oh well life goes on. It's not the end of the world. Yet people are still continuing to vent and rage because their investment ultimately wasn't truly repaid with a game that was supposed to live up to it. Does sound like you, since you've posted a few comments. I know I have, but there's a difference. I'm just one guy who has an opinion and try to talk about things, learn from them and ultimately just enjoy myself on the internet, and slowly not caring what other people think when they go at it and lose it. I don't know about you, but so far, all you got is cynical comments. Maybe you supported this game but felt betrayed or someone who just was watching the kickstarter campaign. Your right to voice your complaints, but you don't know people that you think you do, it's in your mind, but we don't know that much that happened other than what we know from people so far. But let me guess you're going to talk s**t because hey that's all your good at. Thing is, I don't think Inafune's ever even referred to himself "the father of Megaman", it was always magazines and whatnot doing that. I don't think anyone can deny his importance in the franchise though, some of his earliest memories working in the industry was working on Megaman, and he ended up being the guy pushing the franchise really hard in its later years as a producer. For all his faults, without him I'm pretty sure a ton of those games would've never gotten made.

It really depends on how you define that, but most would say Akira Kitamura. The first Mega Man only had 6 people working on it and the descriptions Inafune gave on how games were developed back then meant that every member had to have a versatile skill set. When Inafune joined the team the character Mega Man himself was already designed by Kitamura, who was the senior member and director of the game. Inafune would later do some of the more detailed artwork of Mega Man, which is why some people refer to him as the "father". It was a team effort if you ask me, and Inafune himself usually mentions that when its brought up. BTW Inafune pulled out 2 of those 6 people who work on Mega Man 1 (3 if you include himself) to be staff for Mighty No. 9. Another reason why the game was such a disappointment- it felt like the game had everything going for it yet it ended up being mediocre.

And it's not only ungly as hell graphics alone - leveldesign is exremely mediocre too - and that's the last thing people expect of "return of megaman" they been waiting for. Shovel Knight is one of the best examples of a good kickstarter. They paced their ports to different platforms as well as DLC. Everyone should look to them for guidance. I also had no idea there was so much drama involved with this Kickstarter either. I thought it just went bad because Inafune made bad decisions and stretched his ideas too thin (Comcept also released several projects while working on MN9 like Yaiba and Soul Sacrifice and even Red Ash which failed). I think he just lost focus and thought of MN9 too much like Megaman. I know it's supposed to be a Megaman revival but Inafune was not at Capcom anymore, he should have realized he didn't have the funds to dick around with anime side stories and more unnecessary stuff. It's just a shame, if they had buckled down and just focused on the core game and level design, it probably would have sold well and they could have built more on the success of that. They just got too bloated for their own good. I've still never been sure what Gamer Gate is either but I don't think I want to know at this point

Gamergate was a boogeyman created by gaming journalism because it was a group made by people (while journalists would have you not believe this-most of them not being white and many of them being women-hell the mascot for gamergate is an irritated gamergirl) who are sick of the terrible gaming journalism that has cancerously infested the entire community. And for those who say this is bullshit...who were the main ones treating gamergate like the boogeyman-gaming journalists-who was the target of gamergate-gaming journalists. Seriously its connecting 2 and 2 together why journalists would lie about gamergates intentions... "why would journalists lie about people who are criticizing said journalists and calling them out on their shit ethics and morals and lack of unbiased honesty and constantly shitting on gamers and pissing on everything they love and claim to speak for gamers and cause companies and indie developers to make knee jerk reactions and focus on bullshit priorities like reminding people that women are badass rather than just letting good gameplay and badass actions speak for themselves-not doing any research which leads to pretending characters like samus aran dont exist and-" do you see where im going with this. Gaming journalists essentially cant take criticism which leads to them slandering a movement that is calling said journalists out on their bullshit. These are people filled with intolerance yet try to preach tolerance...which leads to gamergate being seen as the devil by the public. And hell there is no point in even talking gamergate-since once gamergate started it awakened a beast that is screeching its name like its voldemort 24/7 and since most people dont do theyre research it led go gamergate being attacked (yet gamergate were the ones attacking people though) and now its dead at this point...it has spread into smaller movements.... Yet these journalists love beating a dead horse cause even though gamergate has been dead for 1-2 dead years now they still speak about it like its still going because they wouldnt have a boogeyman to sing songs about if they let the dead horse be buried already. Appabend has talked about the topic mutiple times bringing up whats bullshit about the hatred against the movement that kept me informed since gaming journalism is cancer at this point...to the point it has become something you would see on south park rather than anything in reality. Seriously go watch Appabend and just be amazed by the stupid shit journalists spew out of their manchild lips.

Wanna know why the game was delayed so much? The company I used to work at, Bug-Tracker (now Globalstep) did the QA for MN9, and the game was such a mess of bugs that it failed certification on consoles REPEATEDLY because the devs were asses who wouldn't lift a finger to fix game-breaking (and compliance-violating) issues, then they'd fail certification, then they'd bitch and moan that bug-tracker wasn't doing its job, then bug-tracker would throw all of their recorded communications back at the devs' face and so on until something nominally playable passed certification just barely.

I'm sure it'll be covered in Inafune's episode, but it's always bothered me to hear 'the father of Mega Man' when while he was the head producer for most of the franchise starting with the PS1 era, he didn't design Mega Man himself despite being a character artist back with the first game, and he only ascended to the role of producer once he moved up in the company while others left the position. He is partly responsible for Mega Man's ascension into a public icon and had a hand in formulating stories and characters all series long, but his character designs dropped off the franchise once his producer status hit and I remember a lot of people seeing Inafune in charge of Mighty No. 9 as practically a Kojima tier of director and developer relationship when it was really nothing quite like that.

I wouldn't say that MN9 was a scam but rather it was a necessary cautionary tale of kickstarter for both the developers and the public. It needed to happen that way. I do think that MN9 would have been a better game if it had only received it's original asking amount. The game became bigger than they could deliver. This is merely a byproduct of hype culture. The more and more consoles the game was developed for the more development had to be split. The more features that were added less time was spent on QA. They are not a AAA level devs and backers were asking AAA level development out of a AA developer. The gameplay is fine, but the cutscenes are absolute dogshit. The character models were all flat. Mouths did not move. Everything happened in a blue room. And unfortunately the gameplay was hurt by terrible framerates. Comcept getting $4M for MN9 was only the fault of the fans. Thank you very much for taking on this topic. Inafune is my childhood hero, with Zero specifically being a huge influence in my life, and the backlash he got thanks to the mismanagement of this project deeply upset me. Note that I am a backer, and thankfully got my copy of the game on the day of release (PS4) from a code that worked the first time around. So, I thankfully didn't go through the post-release mess some backers reported. I got to meet the man himself during October 2013 at a games' con, and aside from the disbelief I went through that week (I still can't believe it happened), he was very very very upbeat about the Kickstarter. With it being successful just a few months before. Shame to see it ended up like this. About him owning up to his mistakes, I seriously didn't enjoy how misreported Ben's own personal opinion during the launch livestream got lassoed into Inafune's words. Whoever read an article about Ben's quote without watching the actual scene as it happened would definitely go out of it branding Inafune a liar and cheat. And, out of the entire debacle, this livestream moment was like the (distorted) nail in the coffin. Now most see Inafune as a con man. But again, thank you for this video and the objectivity you've injected into it, while setting the record straight. And this objectivity is something we've come to expect from your productions. To conclude, I'd like to mention that I was planning to tweet all the above to you. But yeah, it'd be one heck of a string of tweets lol. Keep up the good work! P.S. About Dina, you forgot to mention the revelation that, not only was her friendship with the developers a reason behind her hiring, but that she was actually the girlfriend of one of them.

I really think what limited them so much was how many platforms they did. And sticking to the UT3 Engine... Which is great for FPS games but not the best for side scrolling platforming action. Especially when you tag that to the 3DS that is already kind of struggling just to run that engine's base code. Like I think the other game that uses UT2 engine is Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D. But guess that is what happens when you do not use a house engine, your software gets kind of bloated and takes up too much bandwidth for its own good. But then you run into larger budgets and other problems when trying to port. I prefer house engines cause tend to be better when they are not trying to be "futuristic" and simply stick to the base needs of the project. Otherwise then you tend to run into issues that Natural Selection 2 had, which also killed a community for completely different reasons.

Just out of curiosity, how many people played the multiplayer? They kept delaying it for that and no one was buying it to play with other people. Honestly this was a horribly mis-managed project.

Multiplayer was impossible to find a match on even at launch unless you set up a match with a friend who was also stupid enough to buy this dumpster fire. And then it turned out that the multiplayer mode they kept delaying the entire game for was even more broken than the main game.

I got burned on two different kickstarter projects. I didn't put in much but one project never materialized and the guy(s) took off with the money. Another one I got the game but the game was terrible and it took the creators over a year to deliver on promises (not even stretch rewards). I am done with all Kickstarter campaigns.

You gotta keep in mind that there have been great kickstarters and that theyre not all made by the same person. Just make sure you check - Are they experienced? - Do they show the project off? - Do they seem well organised? - Are they playing within their limits? For as much as I want and believe they'll be good, its why I didnt back Shenmue 3 or Bloodstained either. It meant I was able to confidently back Yooka Laylee though

Of course I keep that in mind, but I have personally backed a few projects Games: Mighty Number 9 Timespinner Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Legend of Iya A Hat in Time CRYAMORE Other Let's Throw The Best Gaming Party in The World AGAIN! SGC3 Cat Ear Headphones Of everything I've backed, SGC3, Cat Ear Headphones and Mighty Number 9 are the only ones to have been released. SGC3 was good, Cat Ear Headphones were absolute shit and Mighty Number 9 was absolute shit. Shantae is coming out soon so maybe that will restore my faith, but right now, I feel like everything I've backed except for SGC, have been a waste of money.

I played the demo a while ago, and the Shantae game feels exactly that - a Shantae game. If you keep your expectations at that level I think you will be fine. But yes, I completely understand the sting of kickstarter. If I back anything, it won't be for much money in case things go south. It's always a gamble.

I'm admittedly somewhat glad the game failed. Not to say I wouldn't have wanted to play a good Megaman successor, but the problem is that people were too forgiving regarding the mismanagement just because it was a kickstarter, it felt. Kickstarter games can be amazing experiences and even lead new game development teams, but the fact that this shattered its goal and was then delayed exponentially, people expected it to be amazing, especially regarding the wait. The fact that this game failed shows that if people want giant funding for kickstarter games, they have to prove they can get it done. Shovel Knight, Undertale, even FNAF, these games proved that the programmers are capable and they deserve a shot, Inafune seemed to be under the impression that he and his team were basically owed a shot because of old-school Megaman. With that being said, I am legitimately disappointed that Beard Blade didn't reach its goal, as based on the existing trailer, it seemed like an impressive game.
@FamousWolfe

The biggest kick in the balls to me, as a MN9 Kickstarter backer, wasn't all the delays or the poor communication. It's that the game itself was just so mediocre. Inafune tried to expand his idea into a full blown franchise far too quickly, and much like Icarus flying too close to the sun, MN9 was just far too ambitious for its good. I think they should've focused on the single player experience and focused on the PC/Mac/Linux release along with Xbox 360/PS3/Wii U. The portable console versions and the PS4/Xbox One releases should've come much later. Also, the anime/manga/TV series should have stayed as just ideas in Inafune's head until he had delivered a solid release of the MN9 game. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

The one thing this postmortem didn't explain is exactly what happened to the money. And as someone that was there I can tell you exactly what happened to it. That worthless 2 player online co-op mode, it was the central crux of nearly all the drama and delays surrounding this game. almost the entire budget of the kickstarter, and then some went into a bunch of rookie devs trying to make the game run online co-op on different 6 platforms. They pissed away almost 3 million dollars and a year and a half on that alone. The tragity was it, was a completely avoidable disaster if they just jettisoned the multiplayer. Few people would have actually kicked up a fuss over it, but Inafune's obsession with fulfilling every stretch goal ended up fucking the entire production and completely ruining his reputation in the process, and all because he couldn't be assed to directly address the backers about the issue. The end product probably would not have been much better, but at lest it would have been mediocre on time and not generated the giant amorphous and honestly overblown hatedom around it.

Interesting. As a backer who was too busy to follow properly the development of the game or most things in the community. This was a good summary. I still visit MN9 as I do have legit fun with the gameplay (so at least there's that), but I also just see in the game how they tried to stretch into far too many directions without polishing. The "mold lines" are too apparent. We'll see how Red Ash works and I do kinda hope they manage to make a sorta Megaman 2 for MN9 (NO public funding and such, improve everything). That said, I've heard CapCom is actually for reals working on Megaman stuff for 2017. We'll see but they might manage to overtake Inafune.

Thats the thing though, Inafune is a businessman, not a creator. From what I hear he wasnt really the creator of Megaman, the creator of Zero yes, but some other bloke designed him. Thats not to say I didnt respect him as a producer for games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet, but from the horrible communication going on with the product and trying to make a series before the first game even came out its clear he still has the mindset of a AAA company head. Just like a certain Peter Molyneux. If you havent I recommend Kim Justice's retrospective on Peter Molyneux, part 4 on how horribly he did as soon as he created 22Cans.

As a backer who lived through all of this, I'm so thankful that you made a video that explains what happened in a non editorial manner. However I would like to add in or comment on some items: Dina "qualified" as a Community Manager!? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. Ok, in all seriousness yes perhaps she had the academic qualifications of being one, but she clearly had a lot to learn with managing the forums. As mentioned, criticism were silenced and/or asked to be contained into a single topic "This Is NOT Ok", which is very odd since it wasn't again forum rules (at least at the time). However, any praise, words of encouragement or slander/insults towards the critics were left practically untouched. There were clearly some one sided actions and decisions being made there. As much flak Dina gets (which I'm guilty of doing as well), I'm happy that you pointed out that communication was one of the main issues with the project and that wasn't necessarily all on her. It was said in the video, and I've heard from other people make this point as well, but I still don't understand how limiting the updates in Kickstarter helped to free time for the team to work on the game. The updates still had to be made as they were still being posted on the official site, but they also had to make a "digest" update specifically for the Kickstarter page. I also think another issue people had with Deep Silver becoming publisher is that you had to now wonder why Comcept was even asking for additional funds for voice acting and Ray DLC. Perhaps they weren't entire sure of the financial assistance they would get with getting a publisher, but I'm fairly certain they were in talks and had a rough ballpark on what to expect. Simply put, unless the deal didn't go though, they should've known that additional funds were coming in that would've helped pay for the additional content. So why even ask backers or "slacker backers" for more funds?

Okay look man i understand if you still want to have faith in Inafune and that's fine and all but you can't deny all the scumy stuff he's pull off over the years when he was at his new company making Mighty No. 9 and such. There's also these facts that are true around the internet saying that Keiji Inafune is not the creator of Mega Man and Hideki Kamiya saying that he's a business man and not a creator. Keiji Inafune had everyone fooled but now everyone knows the whole true now, well some of them but you know. So you can still believe in him if you want to it's your choice but almost everyone in the whole wide has given up on him, can't blame them though. Keiji has ruined his own reputation and he has no want to blame but himself. Whether his ego got the best of him or not he still pulled the trigger on ruining his reputation by his own choice. To be honest i don't know if he can come back from this unless if he make a fantastic game i think and you know.

You know I realized that people can talk trash and even assume the truth, when the assumptions is the mother of all screw ups. I took it all with a grain of salt, knowing I don't know Inafune, and neither does anyone else who claims to think to know him from his actions with Capcom and Comcept. Over the years, I just stopped caring what some people think at times, because it's all trash talking in the end, the constantly try to say what they think is the truth. Call me a fool, but mostly people have been foolish for some part of their lives other than just with gaming. MN9 is a failure and that's the truth. Sometimes even those who been with what they worked on have a chance of failing. I don't know Inafune and never will. And I'm not going to act like it because of one stupid game. And that's all this thing was. A game that should have been a lot better, but it isn't.
