Dude you learned a ton in your journey. Ive been playing instruments for 20 years and have used rocksmith extensively (because its freakin fun). I can confidently say you are a decent guitarist no... a multi instrumentalist! You're very confident with your fretting hand, even with your pinky. WOW! Your picking, well as you say there was nobody directly coaching you. But in 60 days I wouldn't expect someone to pick up nuances in their picking or produce a song on guitar! and bass! That's crazy man. Good Job!

@rcrai3

@@yol_n Just noticed your comment. Sorry so late. Here is my perspective on Rocksmith. It is a game and it is fun to play. If you play it a lot you will get really good at sight reading the game. It will get you playing songs right away and that is what everyone wants to do when they are learning an instrument. I think it is a really fun tool to learn new songs. I notice that I don't actually learn the song unless I take it to master mode. Most songs I play along with in Rocksmith I don't remember exactly how to play on my own. But it gives me the idea of what the chords are and what key its played in. I jump around a lot and just treat it as a game. However (here come the negatives) it doesn't teach you technique or how to play clean or with nuances. If the note recognition picks up what you are playing then you think you are doing good. But if you try to play the song without the game you may notice its not great. It definitely leaves a lot of room for error. Which leads to sloppy playing. If you want to play clean and precise. You have to spend time practicing with just you and your instrument. And a metronome. I'd like to reemphasize the metronome because most people just focus on the how to play a song and then the timing is always off. Timing is everything in music. Next Rocksmith doesn't teach timing or improv or theory. So great you used riff repeater to learn the entire solo for X song. What key is it in? What scale are you playing? How do you improv over this song? It doesn't teach you any of that. Only how to play it. Its just copy and paste. Which is what tablature is as well. To actually learn and understand how to play an instrument there are not really any short cuts. You have to learn music theory and apply it to your instrument. All of the internet hype and youtube videos are just parts and pieces of it. While the riffs are fun and good to know. Its great for your tool box. Its better to understand what you are playing and where you can take it.

@@rcrai3 tbh when I picked my electric guitar I just went to Rocksmith because I first wanted to see where I was at (I didn't feel like a complete begginer but after one year I don't know shit) and, the premise, I wanted to learn songs but yes it's how you say, I'm a Chili Peppers fan and I can say that while I can play some of the songs I wanted in the game, I can't play any of them outside of the game except those I had practiced before playing it, or while watching actual lessons of it my major problems rn are music theory, I just feel like I don't have time to study guitar, and picking: really, I feel like my hands are just like stone, I can't fast pick even if I wanted to, but when playing Rocksmith it doesn't really tell you because if it's close enough the game says you're doing great

I think that Rocksmith is a great learning tool for anybody that already has the "want to" for playing guitar. I'm a guitarist of over 30 years and I still like using Rocksmith to "game-ify" the process of learning a song. You had the drive, and I think that was the main ingredient in your progress. Rocksmith just provided a rigid framework for your learning. Your original song shows that you learned beyond that rigid structure, and you internalized the concepts that it was trying to teach you. Great job on the song, and enjoy your newfound talent on the instrument!

It was a very thoughtful and honest review of the game. I recently made a practice space, in my home office, and got my guitar out of its coma, at the back of my closet, and fired up this game after about four years of not playing it. I came looking, to KZfaq, for inspiration, after having a great session last night, and your vid did not disappoint! Rock on! And wait...what?! Is that you at the end there, I mean your voice and all? GREAT JOB! Gonna follow you on all the places.

Very thorough overview of Rocksmith. As someone who learned to play guitar from having it around all the time and just fooling around trying to be like my older brother in the mid 80's, Rocksmith looks overwhelming to me. Your commentary was amazing, and if I was considering purchasing, would consider your words worth their weight in gold. Your song at the end is 👍

I have been playing guitar for over a year now and started off with rocksmith. The game is brilliant and definitely reduces the learning curve. The chord zombie game and star chords are perfect for learning and practicing chord changes. However, you have to augment your learning with reading up on theory as well as watch video's which there are a ton on youtube (if you can get through all the ads). The game does not teach you strumming and rhythm. Luckily they are some amazing channels that teach you them. Guitar theory can be very enjoyable once you get through the basic's but you always need to push yourself. For me this when you can call yourself a guitarist or say that you can play guitar. I want to master it before I say that I can play guitar which keeps me motivated, not to mention playing all of my favourite songs that I always wanted to play. So good luck on your journey.

Awesome video dude. This is the best review of rocksmith. Everyone else has played guitar before and they're just testing out the game more than using as a teaching resource. I have a guitar on order and Rocksmith2014 for ps4 coming as well. I got to your level about 10+ years ago and I've been toying with picking it up again. I've not picked up a guitar since mine broke a decade ago. Hopefully I can get back to the level I was and improve fairly quick. Rock on buddy. 🤘🏻 new sub here 😁

Well done video. I've never tried Rocksmith, but I've just ordered it; I'm an intermediate player, so curious what it's like. An interesting take on learning from the perspective of someone who's never played guitar before. Some of the things you say are "skewed", but not "wrong"; they're just the way students make things harder than they actually are. Ultimately, as we all learn, it's the practice that makes you better, even if you don't know what or why you're practicing at first. You definitely progressed far in just 2 months; again, as we all eventually learn, that's all down to interest and effort.

I just bought an electric last week, I had an acoustic before so I know one thing or two but like some more advanced 'proper' guitar techniques I don't really know of this video was really inspiring for me, I personally have real difficulty with the 'higher frets' (12+) and with some more fast solos I'm seeing the game throw at me already. I'm just hoping I don't really pick some bad habits because of it because I don't really trust my ability of seeing such nuances like Mighty did

Good review. Ive gone through phases, played for a couple of years in the early 2000's (wish this was a thing back then) but motivation and other interests took over, sold most of my guitars and amps. Then when this first came out i jumped on it and it was good, i had a lot of the basics from prior playing and i learnt a few songs fully , which was more than i had really done in the past. I then got busy and i did miss my much nicer guitars id sold a few years past so stepped away. Now nearly 10 years has passed (library has grown a lot, which is a bonus) and ive got the bug again, waiting for a cable to arrive as ive long since lost my original one and i cant wait to jump back in, impulse purchased a minty gorgeous Fender AO 50's Tele to make up for my much missed Japanese 52 Tele i sold before Rocksmith was a thing and have regretted ever since. You made great progress and can confidently call yourself a guitarist and you will pick up a lot of stuff so much easier, Rocksmith is a great foundation and when i first played it for a few months i progressed far more than i did years of trying to learn myself playing tabs and such.

I started playing electric guitar after a 7 year break from acoustic playing. My first song parabola by tool I learned with the help of an online tutorial and after that I got rocksmith. The thing I recomend using is the display all notes mode and just slow down sections to learn a song. By now I would say Iam an intermediate player mostly self tought so yeah good piece of software. Also a little hint there are a bunch of tricks to improve lag you can read up online and as far as I know is that singlecoil guitars get picked up worse then humbuckers

I bought both Rocksmith and Rocksmith 2014 . I really enjoyed both of them but really enjoyed playing the gigs in front of new venues on the first one similar to Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The second version took that away for some reason. I still play on the PS3 version and it’s too bad they didn’t upgrade and also put out new games with new songs instead of having to buy them. Still love these games because it helped me start learning. Now I know I need to practice more lessons in the game which is something I avoided in the past. Thanks for this great informative video!!

Cool stuff. I actually am a guitar teacher and I will say that your progress for a few months playing was pretty solid. I would say however that your progress probably came more from the consistency of practice than Rocksmith itself. You'd be surprised on how many people opt to "learn guitar" but then don't put in the time needed on their end. That being said what I like about Rocksmith is that it makes those intial stages way cooler than I often can when talking about technique and the like. I think guitar teachers in general don't value things like Rocksmith enough for that. I had a student come in once and say "I played Rocksmith for like 4 hours the other day; is that a good use of my time?" On the one hand, sure Rocksmith isn't the most effective way to learn a song or some techniques etc. but who could be mad at a kid working for 4 hours on something.

What would be the perfect system for you? Rocksmith making partnerships with real life instructors so the instructor would organize what the student plays or something like that?

Great job. I got RS2014 with the intention of going from cowboy chords to doing the face shredding that I like to listen to. I also like the mix of genres they have. The techniques they want you to learn are confusing for me to watch fly by on the screen. The issue I have with the technique arcade is the calibrating. No matter how long I bang on the strings, the game cannot hear my guitar. Yes, I had the knobs all the way up, by testing with my amp. Great video, and glad I am not the only one with issues on the side games and technique signaling.

I’ve been playing Bass for about 30 years now, and I love Rocksmith. Like you said it’s definitely even better with the custom songs. For someone like me who’s older, and left behind the days of playing in an actual band it’s great since you’re playing along with actual music. This may or may not apply to you so much as to people new to playing since this video is about a year old. Don’t put to much into the difference between a Squire and a higher end Fender. My son who has been playing for several years now has 4 guitars 2 of which are Squires (a Strat and a Tele), and he loves them both almost as much as his older $600 Ibanez Jem and his Les Paul Custom. If you really want to get the most out of a Squire take it to someone who knows what they’re doing and have it professionally “setup”. This can make a huge difference in how it sounds and handles. Maybe even drop in some “used” Made in Mexico Fender pickups (which is what’s in my son’s Squire Tele), and some better tuners, and for a couple hundred bucks you’ve made a huge difference in that Squire for a lot less than buying a “higher end” Fender.

@@MightyNifty I've been trying to get into it off and on but always kind of falter out after 30 days, so it's good to know that there is some natural plateau that you have to push yourself past. I'm not sure what it is myself, but the next time I try again I'll try to see why I end up losing interest. I'm not sure if you might have some more general thoughts on keeping up with it? I will say, because it's the easiest song in the default lineup and the song I start with every time I pick up the game again, I do know Blitzkrieg Bop pretty well lol

I'd say to try the lessons if there's something not working quite right or feeling awkward, just Google the issue or look up KZfaq tutorials. Also, using the riff repeater to slow down songs can be helpful since actually learning a song all the way through is great motivation (and don't go by Rocksmith's difficulty since that's all kinds of messed up, just search for 'easy guitar songs'). Oh, and try out some alternate lead/rhythm arrangements. Hope this is helpful!

@@MightyNifty I'll keep that in mind the next time I give it a shot again. There is something to be said about being able to ask someone questions though, so lessons may be needed in the end. Thanks!

This is an amazing video. I'm in the same journey you were, right at the beggining. This only got me even more excited of what I am right now. One question I have. Did you use a pick the entire time or you switched? I'm having issues with finding the right string with the pick and feel more confortable without but at the same time, something tells me I should stick to it.

Pretty impressive how far you got in that short amount of time. Hope you're still playing now, a year after the video. A little warning though; don't know what kind of speaker is in that Squire amp you have, but in general guitar amps aren't made for the low frequencies bass guitars have and if the amp doesn't have wide range speakers it might end up ripping the speaker cones. Since it has an AUX port it shouldn't be a problem though, I think they have taken into consideration that you can play music through it. But it's good knowledge to have if you ever upgrade.
