The United States does not have an official language. Nothing in the constitution or other founding documents mentions any preeminent language. It is one of the most wonderful features of our democracy. It allowed my grandparents and millions of other people from around the world to settle in the USA and establish roots. It is no surprise that so very notable Americans today and of the last hundred years are the progeny of non English immigrants. Do not let this Administration ruin the exceptionalism of our American Republic.

This was not Acosta's problem. It was Miller's snarky responses. Acosta had legitimate questions and used a legitimate example. His reference to english speaking countries were just examples; and anybody with common sense would have known that! Miller didn't just insult Acosta. He insulted our freeom of speech and right to question those people who work for us! If the administration's communication team hates dealing with reporters so much, why did they go into the profession? They need to deal wirh their jobs professionally or get out! Skills based selection is also wrong! It's perhaps the lesser of two evils at best. That also is not what america is about!

Acosta had every right to ask a question of substance to dissect the reason why English is required. Miller was, as usual, a rude, belittling, baiting little creep, adding insults, which Acosta didn't address. If it were me on the end of Miller's insults, I'd be on my feet asking for an apology. Miller was there to add the fuel to the "hate the press" absurdity. The Press is saving our democracy. Good on Mica! It IS a policy of engineering the English component. All the disgusting speeches come from this weasel Miller. Press! Challenge these idiots at the podium! Don't be wiping boys! And Joe! RESPECT Mica on air!

I don't see what's wrong with what Jim Acosta did. It's a reporters job to ask questions and that's what he did. If Miller had just god damned said that he wants to slow the flow of ethnic immigrants there would have been no back and forth and the people of that room would have known what they're dealing with. If you tell yourself that this is about anything other than decreasing the flow of immigrants from non-white countries you're fooling yourself. Miller goes on a tirade about how other countries have english speaking people and sure, but nowhere near as many as Europe and Australia. More english speaking people in white countries than ethnic ones. That's a fact no one can dispute. He asked a substantive question that wasn't answered.

If this policy is administered the same as college admissions in terms of English proficiency there are only 20 nations that get waivers to admit international students without an exam like TOEFL or IELTS or PTE. The question/accusation by Acosta is a valid concern considering WHENEVER THIS ADMINISTRATION TALKS ABOUT ROLLING OUT NEW POLICY THERE ARE NEVER DETAILS. Like the one page "budget" and introducing policy by tweet and designing healthcare repeal behind closed doors. YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND ACOSTA'S FRUSTRATION WITH THIS PATTERN.

I was actually a little surprised myself about their reactions. Like all Joe ever does IS rant. As for the whole issue on the English speaking requirement, sure you'll have people from every country who speak English, however, it's undeniable that this requirement gives immigrants from more stable, wealthy, "Western," countries an advantage.

There is nothing wrong with quoting a poem from the 1800s, because lawmakers are trying to base policy off of those times. It's the same reason why we still follow the Constitution even though it's 2017. Laws were made to restrict people from traveling to other land masses are areas, just because people who were rich or had more power laid claim to those lands. Why can't people just live in harmony? Steve Miller was the rude one, not Jim Acosta.

Immigration isn't about the work force, it isn't about some type of "job that now one else will do". It's about the life that the immigrant had where they came from and that they desire to go find a better life. It's about how that Nation that they came from couldn't have that kind of life so they came here to america to find it. The narrative that these people are here to do jobs that no one else will do is just a talking point with no fact to support it. So there really isn't any need for any other talking points other than what can be done to improve where they came from not what they can do here.

Isn't opportunity for education one of the things people seek in America? A more highly skilled person is more likely to take a job from a currently employed American than a person seeking a path to improvement and starting at the same place all young Americans start at. Needing to develop the skills and gain the tools to carve out success in a society that promises it. An engineer from India accustomed to dollars a week does not bode well for the wage vs cost of living disparity that has grown over the last decade. We need wages to improve or cost of living to reduce. Bringing in competition that will work for less at similar skills sounds like a great plan for businesses but not so great for our dying middle class and those working two jobs without ends meeting.

Every time I watch morning Joe, Joe cuts Mika off while she's talking. She almost never gets a chance to finish a thought. The title of the video is "Mika defends Jim A." and I only get to hear 10 seconds of what she thinks but he lets all the men go on for a long time and finish their thoughts. Any one else notice this? Is she just there to have a woman present...?
@skyscreamstudios
@skyscreamstudios 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, she does get cut off occasionally, but those men are not co-hosts of the show. Those guys are guest speakers who are there to speak. Mika is a professional. She knows what her job, which is co-hosting, entails. As a host you need to let your guests speak. You also follow the lead of the person whose show it is. She did defend Mr. Acosta in the video and made her viewpoint pretty clear on the matter. I've also watched her do lengthy solo editorial style pieces on more than one occasion. She is intelligent, confident, and professional. It's a bit sad to insinuate someone like her would only be there because of her gender.
@swanpride
@swanpride 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is what a host should do and what Joe constantly DOESN'T do. The show is actually way better when he isn't present, because Mika allows her guests to finish their arguments instead of jumping in and taking over, like Joe keeps doing. So my question is why is she only the co-host and not the one whose name is on the show, when she is so obviously better suited for the job? And I think that was Samantha Schafer's point, too, why putting an intelligent woman into the show if you don't allow her to do her job and let instead some arrogant a...hole praise himself the whole time?

They're all missing the key points. First, the new policy will have exactly the opposite economic effect that is desired. And second, and more importantly, the English language preference is precisely the type of racial and cultural engineering that Acosta suggested it is. You only have to know that noting the statue of liberty poem was not original (and the implication is that it's not representative of our values) is a standard alt-right talking point. Miller, Bannon and Trump are deplorable racists, and Acosta is calling them out for it. Good for him!

I'm surprised I would think these educated people would really take the time to analyze what Jim was saying which was by making English speaking a requirement it proportionally advantages those that already have an advantage. Then they would already have over non-English speackers. People that speak different languages fluently enrich our Amercian so much not to mention the difficulty it takes to learn a langue. If that was a requirement for Americans living a foreign country it would be a problem of course as you live there you pick up a few things like the langue, the culture, even protonation and hand signals. Also, Jim was right Miller has reimagined what the statue stands for especially now that poem does mean something no matter if it was added later. But I am surprised by this panels reaction it was very off putting.

Tell that to the Disney employees who had to train the "highly skilled, uniquely qualified" Indian IT workers who were taking their jobs but didn't actually know how to do those jobs. You are unbelievably naive if you think that Americans won't be hurt just because the immigrants can speak English and have skills and an education. All it really means is that white collar workers will lose their high paying jobs to immigrants who will work for far less money. Just another blow to the US middle class.

Displacement is exactly what has already been happening under our current immigration system. I don't know whether you people are really this dumb or just pretending most of the time.

They demand command of English for immigrants and then humorously send out a spokesperson who does not know the meaning of the words he uses. It is so funny when Mr. Miller uses cosmopolitan as a synonym for parochial when it is an antonym. Most amusing.

It's not a discussion about a poem being policy, it's about a cultural value system that our country has embraced.

"I am shocked by your statement"... Really Stephen??? This coming from the person who pestered minority students and lobbied against the use of Spanish or the celebration of festivals that promoted their cultural identity.

It is not that Americans won't do the job. The low skilled jobs do not pay enough money for Americans to live on. Minimum wage in Virginia is 7.75 maybe , that's 310.00 a week before taxes and 1240.00 a month before taxes. There is no where in Virginia to live off of this money unless you are on some kind of assistance.

Regan Pelletier his point actually was good. Acosta is the son of Cuban immigrants who came to this country before the crisis there not speaking English. he's well versed in exactly what this policy is trying to do

The problem I have with this skill-based immigration is, back in the 80s and early 90s, there was a man who worked as a janitor at the insurance company my mother worked for. He was an accountant in his native country. It made no sense to me then, and, I was just a teenager and it doesn't make sense to me now, given that he had a very valuable skill set, especially at that insurance company.

Last I checked we have no official language in the US and therefore it is ridiculous to require anyone speak the English language to be a US citizen.
