That plane is so slow and graceful it is hard to imagine that it was once one of the deadliest aircraft in the world.

I love the way it got into the air a very short run and up and away. those old WW1 planes were so maneuverable. like a kite with an engine. I absolute love those planes

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen and heard. I fell in love with the Fokkers of the great war when I was 10 years old. This one flying reminds me why.

Reminds me of the Blue Max... Hauptmann Heidemann: "Very Pretty Flying Willi... You should stop it. You'll live longer." The Fokker D.VII was the height of WWI Fighter Design... Fast, Sleek, Graceful and Deadly.

They didn't have starter motors, but hand cranked starter magnetos. The engine is temporarily decompressed using a handle at the rear of the camshaft, and turned through a few priming revs. It's then recompressed, and you can hear the pilot cranking the starter mag, whereupon she starts first time.

I saw this exact airplane from this exact pilot on Hahnweide (Germany) this month. Apparently, he found it somewhere hidden in Sweden on a farm. The engine is restored, but the plane around was rotten and had to be rebuild from scratch. So it's half restored, half a replica if you want.

I keep coming back to this video.... it's a great representation of what the D7 was capable of. I can understand why the D7 was the only aeroplane mentioned in the Armistice that Germany had to surrender. Can you imagine being in a Sopwith Camel, fighting the gyroscopic procession, with one of these on your tail? It must have been truly terrifying.

The D VII was the first to use an non-rotary engine,a six cylinder inline.
@horrido6669 ай бұрын
I just realized how little rigging the DVII has. The wing must flex a lot.
@tsmgguy11 жыл бұрын
Looks to be a very forgiving aircraft to fly, with few if any vices. Mikael seems to be holdling some significant forward stick on the high speed passes. No elevator trim system? Slow speed performace looks magnificent, with level flight possible with the engine just off of idle. Sounds as though the engine never exceeds 1,500 RPM or so at any time.
@rjhinnjАй бұрын
Interesting that the aircraft is void of external wing bracing wire. I didn’t know that about the D.VII. Great for better performance with less drag.
@friday381013 жыл бұрын

Fokker DVII: Much more important as a weapon, built in much higher numbers and overall a much better airplane.. but still the Dr.I is *the* iconic (German) plane of WWI. It boggles the mind.

Just wonderful, best plane ever. sounds great. Can I donate some money for some flying boots, ha ha. Is it a restored plane or a modern copy ?
@MHG10235 жыл бұрын
It is a modern copy with some original parts. But the engine is an original (- of course - refurbished) Mercedes D IIIa which produces a wonderful noise ...
@gregrechesy41785 жыл бұрын
Superb flying! And the sound of an original engine makes all the difference... Yet I get the feeling that the plane could use more power than the Mercedes can deliver. Appears to loose speed rapidly in climbing maneuvers and the pilot has to dive for speed before every loop. Am I right or is it just an impression?
@patriot6922 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about the engines, other than pilots always wanted more power. These were state of the art at the time (1914 -- 1918?) & I sure do admire how the pilots worked with what they had: they FLEW the aeroplane, learned some physics too I'm guessing. Love the sound. Amazing restoration.

Is this a kit built aerodrome airplanes DVII? Or is it self designed/constructed?
@darkiee692 жыл бұрын
Built to factory specifications using factory drawings and using original methods. I know Mikael was slightly annoyed that he couldn't find a recipe for the glue they used back then.
@rjhinnjАй бұрын
Mikael should be glad he didn’t find a formula for original glues; they were not long lived. Epoxies today (t-88) are 10 times better and stronger and last.
