The logic doesn't even track, if he wanted to protect his "mate", he should've sent Taylor to the monitor so he could rectify a clear mistake and that would've been the end of it. What he did made zero sense whichever angle you look at it.

And honestly that's dumb to think that. As just a fan, IDK how the officials get it right on the pitch ad much as they do. Seeing things that happen in a split second and getting it even 75% right is quite frankly amazing. VAR is there to help you with the rest. I don't get upset at an official that doesn't get it right on the pitch. But when another official has access to the replay and can't even get clear and objective calls right, that ticks me off.

This is where his defence falls apart imo. You can in a way feel for him if he’s saying he wasn’t good at the job and that was the problem (albeit it still throws the system into complete doubt). But he’s basically said there that VAR is gonna protect the ref over actually refereeing the game properly proves it’s a disgrace. It pretty much contradicts everything he’s said in his defence, and implying he’s just trying to make excuses (which refs love to do when justifying decisions btw)

@@robbo512 yeah and it’s weird he tries to compare it to footballers doing stuff to protect their teammates… I mean if a player intentionally did something that would lessen the chance of his team winning just to ‘protect’ one of his teammates from embarrassment, then that would also be very wrong and I’m sure his manager would be furious. They’re there to do a job, and for the referees that is to officiate the game and make the right decisions. Letting protecting your colleagues get in the way of that is surely not right, but throughout this video Mike dean seemed to not have much of a problem with it 🤔 Tbh I hope more come out and say this sort of stuff just so it can be more open and we can see the truth behind decisions. I still firmly believe all VAR communications should be broadcast, I can’t really think of a good reason against it. It would at least make us see the reasoning behind each decision even if we don’t agree with it. Because at times people are left wondering just how they have arrived at certain decisions.

@Drenwickification there's plenty of times players do things and other players back them but privately would disagree its called being united as a team. Mike has pointed out that he addressed it privately and Mr Antony Taylor told him he was wrong. If you watched his actual full podcast with Mr Jordan you will see Mike Dean found it difficult the introduction of VAR and ultimately decided he couldn't do it and retired. He's said that the full communication is coming 100 percent referring is changing and for the better he even said this. I don't think at any point Mike's said he is happy with the decision he made. All this uproar, for a man that is like anyone else made a human mistake and admitted his errors being roasted for it.

Match fixing is premeditated for personal gain, knowingly making an incorrect decision to potentially take some heat off of a colleague (taking him at his word) is nowhere near as malicious, to claim the two are equivalent and should be punished in the same way is ignorant and reactionary. That being said, the sheer number of questionable decisions which seem to be made each week does lead me to think that an independent review of the entire refereeing body and their processes is definitely warranted to ensure that there is no malicious intent when those questionable decisions are made.

@@chrismcmurtry935 Cricket has grey areas too. But they just call them "Umpire's Decision" and stick with the original call. For example, this could be used for offsides. @@Richard3261 yeah I agree for offsides but the problem comes in with handballs for penalties which seems to change game by game for what the ref will give or not, or how much contact when a player goes down in the penalty area, every weekend there's a controversial decision, which is not the case with cricket, but definitely could be more efficient with offsides

@@Richard3261 but also offside, as annoying as the line drawing is, there is no debate, it's all the contentious handballs, diving, was the defender too close when the ball struck him in the hand, I think that's why it took so long for VAR to be introduced because it just makes more of a mess, too much left up to interpretation

No! Your job is not to look out for your colleague in the middle. Your job is to get the calls right. As a professional, getting the call right is of the utmost priority, not protecting your colleagues. Just because Taylor screwed up, doesn’t mean you need to screw up too. As the VAR, you’re supposed to be the guarantee, to make sure you get the calls that the referee missed. This is an absolutely nonsensical explanation.

He should go into hiding. None of the points he made justify why he made that decision. Referees are there to officiate the game. Nothing else. The players are the stars of the show. This screams of arrogance and ego from the referees side. When you have the ability to look back at the decision: multiple times, you should never get the Decision wrong. We need to interview refs after every game. Especially after controversial decisions made.

Reminds me of the Spanish ref at the World Cup with Argentina-Netherlands. Very clearly wanted to be the star of the show and overshadow other players such as Messi and VVD on the pitch. The fact both countries after demanded he got sent home from the tournament and not officiate a match of such magnitude spoke volumes.

It's bizarre to not want to send the ref to the screen when a foul has been missed. There shouldn't be a culture that the ref looks bad if he's having to go the the screen a lot, where did that even come from? I think VAR gets a hard rap sometimes when decisions are debatable but grabbing someone by the hair and pulling them to the ground is about as clear cut as it gets.

The Biggest Concern coming out of this discussion is the revelation that the view of Refs is that the use of VAR is considered bad in the sense that the Ref on the field is having a nightmare if he’s being asked to review incidents. This is the biggest worry because it’s fundamentally incorrect, VAR is like linesmen… an extra pair of eyes with less pressure, using it should be encouraged and celebrated not be considered as the ref having a bad game.. PGMOL should be most worried about this view and take steps to change and educate the refs that VAR means you get better results
