Easy to say when the stems are really well produced

If they aren’t produced well then no matter how much eq and compression you put on it, it won’t help at all anyway..still going to sound like shit.

If you’re receiving stems I would hope they are well produced. Unless you are one of those people that call multitracks.. stems. Then I don’t know what to say..

@@davidasher22 I mean the stems won’t have any processing from the master channel so really it’s up to the engineer to mix the record lol
@davidasher22

@@jzilla_grudgegang yeah, there’s a bunch of ways to approach it. As a mix engineer I’m usually only sending out 2 to 3 sets of stems for a song. Either vocals/music or vocals/drums/music. Basically it’s just for commercial use like tv and film edits. Then I’ll usually just print them with the mix bus processing on. If the processing is so heavy that you can hear a change when summing the stems then I’ll do a phantom sidechain of the full mix and use that to trigger the mixbus processing. But if I’m receiving multiple stems to master (or mix), as long as the stems sound ok without the mixbus processing then fine. But it’s better to not have heavy mixbus processing in these circumstances. Especially if the artist was mixing into the processing. Then it makes sense to just use separate busses and process them individually. I guess the moral of the story is… know what you plan to do beforehand so it doesn’t become overwhelming and complicated. Also, I was really just trying to bust OPs Ass for using the term “stems” incorrectly. 😆. People gotta learn!

Yea but then what am I supposed to do with all these plugins? Just leave’em in a folder? Absolutely not! I’m putting 7 compressors on a kick drum to justify my purchase.

I've heard this from a couple places before, but I think it is good practice to still try to do something to the sounds. Because I have also heard the opposite from a Grammy award winning engineer who says not to skip the small sounds, and fx, make sure to compress and EQ them as well, but then at the same time says not to compress or EQ every sound. In my humble opinion, I think you should try to improve every sound in a mix, and if you find that one already seems to sound perfect, then you can decide then not to try to improve the sound. But usually there are ways to improve every sound in a mix. But I am a nobody with no grammys so should anyone take my advice? Probably not.

I mean, what's the point of compressing a programmed beat? It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me, those sounds are already compressed af...unless you're creating them from scratch, by recording real drums

The problem for us engineers is that while MOST professionals and producers of Mike’s generation are pre-mixing these sounds the overwhelming majority of the new generation are not and they don’t give a fuck to learn how to. Type beat makers are decimating the game.

Exactly!!!!!!!! Mane I thought I was tripping but not tripping. When tryna explain stuff for these other producers or people in general. Bro you ain't gotta do all that you messing it up I made that to sound just like I made it in the beat I did not intend to make it sound robotic and weird efx. Mane some of stuff is cool for your own personal ear or taste. But you don't hear nothing on the radio with all that efx n extra snare rolls n every trick up your sleeve in every beat SMH . Mane come on with all this dumb ash. MF taking 2 hrs to tweak a sound while making a beat. I'm from the hood Memphis and I been makin hard Lil beats since 98. I started off with a DR 5 drum machine. Y'all just don't know how appreciative I am with all these sounds nowadays. That's why I'm naturally cold bcuz I understand exactly what UNC talking about. That's why I b zooming through shyt 😂 killing folks making beats. Keep it simple sometimes. Or really learn the ART of natural swag.
