Let’s not forget this lady lost both her husband and daughter and has given what can only be a heart wrenching recollection of them together. Dignity and humanity. A true lady.

I was at the TT in 2008 and walking around in the paddock area I saw a stall"Mike Hailwood Motorcycle Restorations",and there was Pauline selling T shirts.I was always a great fan of Mike, and was absolutely thrilled to meet this wonderful lady.I remember shaking her hand and mumbling something about being a fan of Mike.Pauline was so gracious and charming, and such a beautiful lady.To be honest ,that encounter was the highlight of my TT trip that year.Well a few years later I watched the documentary"An Ordinary Hero".Pauline was reminiscing about the terrible tragedy she endured ,losing Mike and Michelle. The poor lady became extremely upset and I became so angry about the intrusive nature of the show that I went online to the Mike Hailwood website and sent an email hoping to offer some solace and comfort to Pauline.Imagine my surprise when I received the most wonderful reply from Pauline in which she went into some detail about her experience. She even told me she had shown my message to Dave and he had been very much moved by it.I was absolutely bowled over by her message, which I printed out and is one of my most precious possessions.Such a lovely, beautiful person.

1:53 *I well remember the Race of the Year at Mallory Park September 1964, and long after the race had finished and the crowds had gone, asking a Marshall if I could drive my car (Citroen DS19) around the circuit, he said better ask Mike (Hailwood) and directed me to him. I asked Mike, who I had briefly met a number of times before, and he said of course you can, and told the Marshall to let me through the top gate (Near Hairpin) - He said come back after we are having a bit of a Party with Chris Barber later. Did two/three laps and then went back. Mike appeared genuinely pleased to see me again and asked how I got on. Had a good laugh together as we found had a lot of common interests (3 years older than me and born on the same date 2nd April) and had been to the Belgian Grand Prix the previous year in my Morris Minor 1000. Stayed until late with many of the riders and "Chris Barber & his Jazzmen" playing. Imagine that today, the pits were open and you didn't need a fancy pass to get in.*

Being a teen Honda fanatic in the 60’s, I followed Mike’s career with great interest. I often pretended my Honda 90 SS was a 6 cylinder 250cc, or a 5 cylinder 125cc as I burned up the streets at 45mph. Truly mind blowing bikes of their era. Mike won many races astride the 250, and 350 Honda’s. It would have been my greatest dream to have watched him race, and maybe, if my Luke was good, talk with the man. From what I’ve read, he was a true gentleman on, and off the track.

Tears in my eyes and by and large speechless. His widdow is a strong woman. She lost her husband and daughter that tragic day. Met the man three times and chatted to him on each occasion, twice at his book signings, and once sitting astride the six cylinder Honda 250 at Donington Park.

No. What causes you to believe that? There are videos of David on YT. Mike's widdow says in this video I believe that the photo of Michelle is the only one they have of her in that dress. Plus all you had to do was check his Wikipedia page for clarification. Sadly: "On Saturday 21 March 1981, Hailwood set off in his Rover SD1 with his children Michelle and David to collect some fish and chips. As they returned along the A435 Alcester Road through Portway, Warwickshire,[41] near their home in Tanworth-in-Arden, a truck made an illegal turn through the barriers onto the central reservation, and their car collided with it. Michelle, aged nine, was killed instantly. Mike and David were taken to hospital, where Mike died two days later from severe internal injuries.[42] He was 40 years old. David survived with minor injuries. The truck driver was fined £100."

His son, is equally nice. I never had the opportunity to see or speak to Mike Hailwood, during his glorious career, but a good friend of mine recounts what a true gentleman he was. Ever so eager to speak to adoring fans, sign autographs etc. Met his son in the NEC bike show, really nice chap, obviously it runs in the family.

Clay Regazzoni crashed his car in the 1973 South African GP. SMB Hailwood twice went into flames to pull him out, thus saving his life. Mike and his daughter were killed in a road accident in 1981.

People always ask the impossible to answer question ,"Who was the greatest ever motorcycle racer?"Everybody has different opinions but I always say Mike was the greatest man ever to race a motorcycle.I adored him from the first time I saw him at the 1964 Senior TT.He got out of his sickbed to race and I can still remember him bouncing off the saddle as he went through St Ninian's on the MV 4.Great memories!

I’ve always thought Mike was the best, because he could handle any bike no matter what was wrong with it. You’ve got to say Marc Marquez has to be right up there though, he’s almost a superman, although modern bikes’ tyres, brakes and handling are so good.

@@GrrMeister that's because Joey never contested a GP world championship. Plus his career just didn't revolve around the TT, he also won the Formula 1 World championship 5 times which was held on a mixture of road and short circuit tracks.

I remember my old man saying to me in 1964: “This Mike Hailwood seems to be making a name for himself, doesn’t he?” Saw Mike in person at the Race of the South at Brands Hatch in 1968, he was arguing with an ACU official over something. Mike was on his Honda 297cc six cylinder, racing against Ago, Bill Ivy and Phil Read.
