Yetti and Andrew hired a custom kitchen contractor to build their dream kitchen. A late start, poor workmanship, and terrible communication between the contractor and their subs left Yetti and Andrew with a normal looking, but non-functional Kitchen. To make matters much worse, as the job neared its end, Yetti and Andrew's son, Caleb, mistakenly drank some Varsol that was foolishly stored in a water bottle in the kitchen. Although Caleb recovered from the accident, the couple took the kitchen company to court with Mike Holmes as an expert witness. After winning, due in part to Mike's testimony, Mike helps them build the dream kitchen they should've had in the first place.

The level of "doing it right" depends on how much money a home owner has and how much they are willing to spend. People aren't spending $100,000. for a kitchen in a track home when the house can only sell for $350,000.

@@chrisanthony579 Always been my issue with his show. Agree with everything he stands for but I have watched some shows when the “fix” obviously would cost a fortune and there is no mention of how it all was payed for. These people received 7,000 from the case- that kitchen remodel cost many times that.

@@itomba I know sometimes the show gives stuff for free, often Mike will say something like "We gave you a free dishwasher" as they tore out the old one. Not sure what the home owners pay but I can only imagine it's a fraction of the cost. I know in one episode they talked about how the work was 200k, on a 300k house. In now way would that be worth it to most home owners. It is one the reasons the housing market is bad as it is. Decades of people passing patched broken down houses to some idiot buyer instead of trying to fix the problems.

I've been building and installing custom cabinetry for over 30 years. You can not miss a detail. The granite guys love doing my kitchens because they don't have to shim anything. I do that when I install. The only times I've been called back it to fix something someone else damaged. Or, the customer want's more cabinetry. I never advertised. All my jobs were word of mouth. No matter the size of the job or what kind of cabinets are used, it must be done right. This family will be happy with this kitchen for years. Well done.

The owners took the claim against the company in the court. I am grateful their children were alright especially the little boy who survived the horrific accident. The kitchen looked spectacular, especially the floors and backsplash.. Everything combined nicely together. I would give Mike and his crew the five stars.

The original work was $8,000? The work Mike gave them (for free) is probably pushing $80,000.00. These owners would never spend money out of their pockets for that kind of product. It's why they originally had cheap cabinets, and laminate counter tops.

At 10:40 Mike talks about being surprised when a vent just goes into a wall. Funny story; my father-in-law was a contractor who built the second story on their home and that was where my wife and her bathroom was located growing up. (Do you see where this is going?😂) So he passed away @10 years ago and the family sold the house. I was visiting sone friends on the street and saw that there was a lot of construction going on so I went and talked to the new owner. He showed me how they were changing it and then he showed me the upstairs bathroom….for years, there was always, what we thought was a leak, coming from the roof. NOPE! For whatever reason, he ran the bathroom vent right into the flat roof rafters!!! There was so much mold and black wood where the moisture was being pumped into a space between some 2x8s or 2x10s. We don’t know why. He was notoriously cheap and we assume he didn’t want to pay for the roof vent? Or maybe it was taken out when he fixed the roof? So for whatever reason, it will forever remain a mystery. All we can do is roll our eyes and be thankful the new owner tore down the drywall so that someone didn’t get sick from the mold.

The challenge of dealing with impatient people that use the smallest flaws and use this to run down the contractors and the trades they hire. We don’t always get it right the first time and very often redo the work ourselves before we are done. I’m willing to bet that sometimes the trades put a customer at the bottom of the list because they just cannot completely finish the job faster than the customers demands permit and can get cash flow somewhere else. I know I sound like the kind of trades person that is being described in this video but there are always two sides in these situations. Do a video on that.

They went to small claims court. That's what it said on the sign in front of the building at 7:23. So the judgement was never going to be a huge settlement. I live in WA state. I just checked. The limit for small claims in WA state is $10,000 in 2023. I don't know where they live or when this occurred, but likely they sued for the maximum allowable in small claims. Also, as taken from personal injuries web site... Most states' small claims courts allow personal injury lawsuits, but don't award pain and suffering compensation. So, since the damages to the boy were apparently not long-term or permanent, I suspect that as bad as the incident was, it was probably unlikely that it would result in a substantial settlement, so it was probably not worth pursuing in a big personal injury case. The financial and emotional cost and time involved with a potential lawsuit (to the family) was likely not worth the potential settlement amount. I'm not a lawyer, but I suspect this was the case.

Just to remind the folks: Varsol is a white spirit/mineral spirit, aka Mineral Turpentine. It's used primarily as a paint thinner and used for cleaning oil-based paint off of paintbrushes. So glad that the family won the case against the contractor, and that Caleb lived through it all.

I LOVE watching Mike & his crew tear apart other people's screw ups, but I'm curious on this one: Normally he's so detail oriented; so why miss removing the base boards before putting down the floor tiling?

Mike Holmes is a unique and rare breed. He does things right, follows building codes and is very knowledgeable about safety and PPE. He always criticizes the idiots that causes hard working people to lose their hard earned money. There should be a law allowing him and other competent contractors to “NAME THE NAMES” of these crooks that have no business being contractors…carpenters, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, stone masons. There are laws on the books to stop this abuse, but why are the idiots still doing this over and over again? Well, off the record real contractors should have the freedom and the right to inform potential customers to stay away from known con artists. It would be a consumer PSA ad to warn about fraudulent contractors. Mike…keep up the good work. We need more like you, your kids and your partners in the construction-building industry.

Leaving the toxic liquid in a water bottle in the kitchen where a child could drink it is criminal level negligence & whoever did it should have been arrested, prosecuted, and ordered to pay restitution.

I was a custom painter for over thirty years, it was a different animal thirty years ago, solvents were dumped everywhere, I mean everywhere, including the ground behind the factory. I feel bad for the little guy, I have swallowed my share of chemicals over the years, accidentally of course, it’s harsh on your body.

as a cabinet installer two questions if they are living in the house , are there kids and or pets ? safety is the only thing , clean the site at the end of day , tell them doors are just hung adjustments to come , the hardest part of any job is the last 10% but it’s always a challenge when they are living in it !

So glad Kaleb turned out okay after that horrifying story. Pretty sure if an OSHA person watched this they would do everything they could to contact the couple to help fight the old contractor for endangering the welfare of a child through neglect and mishandling of poisons.

My hope is that the first company should be ordered by the judge to make a financial payment not just for the Kitchen they failed to do right, but for the hospital bills following the poisoning of the young boy!!! I think Jail is in order for leaving chemicals in a drinking bottle around anyone!! As for Mike and his crew, they deserve to be commendated for their support and outstanding work, the house could have burnt down for the faulty electrical work!!
