In Idiocracy, the society was teetering on the edge of ruin, and the people found the smartest person and put him in charge. The people in the movie were smarter than us.

I was 16-17 when office space played on HBO in 1999... Funniest damned thing... and my buddies said "it sounds dumb" now they show their "flair" for it ... But seriously mike judge is a pillar of modern day society. Beavis and Butthead, king of the hill, office space, Idiocracy.... 4 properties that are amazing and regardless most people could quote something from one of them... he litteraly helped shape modern american society...

The reason he's so cautious about being proud of the movie is that the studio shit all over while it was being made. The problem in test screenings (and in the box office release) is that a lot of dumb people didn't understand the whole thing was satire, they just thought it was an extra dumb movie. That's what he means by "difficult to market."

I rented “Idiocracy” from Netflix back when they were still sending DVDs through the mail. I was a huge fan of Mike Judge and couldn’t wait to see the movie. Some reviewer had written something about it being a dystopian black comedy, similar to Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” and that made me want to see it even more. Quiet Sunday afternoon. Bottle of beer. Kicked back on the sofa. Ready to laugh my myself silly. Nothing could prepare me for the absolute horror and utter depression of the soul that was/is “Idiocracy”.

I remember seeing Idiocracy on Showtime back in what must have been early 2007. I just remember being shocked that such a new movie was on Showtime on demand. I was the first person in my group of friends and relatives to have seen it and I was also the one who introduced it to everyone. That was the only time that I found a gem that early on and had the privilege to show it to other people that had no clue what it was. We still quote lines from it to this day, 16 years later.

He's not beating himself up for the low budget, just disappointed that he couldn't fulfill 100% of what he wanted because he had the low budget, which was entirely up to the studio, not his fault. I have said this so many times ... I'm always telling people that this movie was preparing us for the narrative we are now living 😱 . Literally, this and the book 1984. I've gone so far as to ponder on Orwell, being the Fabian he was, having put that book out as a narrative that was to come to fruition in the year of the coded title. Everyone thinks 1984 was projected 40 yrs earlier than it really happened (present times). I think more that we've been there since then and they laugh at us because we can't even realize it

It's a great, hilarious movie, but if you look around yourself, it's really not that hard to notice a downward spiral, and it wasn't different back then either. We've been getting dumber and lazier for a long time now. Like they said, the script actually missed some of the biggest, most significant changes in society, like social media and cancel culture. At its core it basically comes down to "dumb people breed, smart people don't", which is obviously true, but it's not a mind-blowing revelation.
@carlodave9

Devo nailed it way before and way better than Idiocracy. I love Mike Judge -- he distributed a film of mine when no one was interested -- but he screwed up a wonderful idea. If you can't tell from this interview, he knows it sucks. He should have done a Mel Gibson and paid for it with his own money. As it was, the script wasn't ready, there wasn't enough pre-production, it kind of lurched into production, and he was always behind the corporate 8-ball. The idea was brilliant and deserved way more time and care. As it is, only idiots think Idiocracy is a good film. Life imitates art. As our culture gets dumber, the more it appreciates Idiocracy. It helps morons feel smart. Devo's vision of de-evolution was spot-on and never understood or appreciated by morons.

I ordered this movie from Amazon and while watching it I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or get angry. I spent 31+ years in American industry and wrote a book series about the decline and fall of the American work ethic. As a luxury vehicle modifier (conversion vans) and an assembly line worker (fire trucks) I worked with people who could not read on a high school level, could not read a simple tape measure, and honestly believed that 3/8ths was more than 3/4ths! Many times I was taken aside by crew leaders and supervisors and advised to “dumb down“ my language so that many of my coworkers could better understand me. During one production meeting when asked to share my thoughts I started off by saying “Well gentlemen , not to sound presumptuous -“ a coworker immediately cut in saying “There he goes again with them $100 dollar words!” Indeed many of my coworkers asked me “Why you gotta use them bigass words?!”

The language thing is actually really interesting. Throughout all of history, language has evolved. It’s only been through the mass homogenization of language, conditions under which it hasn’t been allowed to evolve as freely, that we perceive it to have devolved. Yet, we still find ways to make it our own. Interesting book by Guy Deutscher that touches on it
