Mike you are simply one of the masters of the mandolin family, be it mandocello or mandola. This performance shows the versatility and beauty of the mandolin with an accomplished musician. May you play for many many years Mike. Thank you.

Stephen Foster's "Angelina Baker" eventually spawned "Angeline the Baker" with oral tradition as the midwife. You can hear the original "Angelina Baker" performed from the 1850 sheet music at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZt3jKZqsZyVcWQ.html. The composition morphed quite a bit from "Angelina" to "Angeline," as you'd expect as those who couldn't read sheet music (maybe not read at all) passed the melody on by ear from musician to musician, some players tweaking the notes. Foster was a Pennsylvania Yankee who may never have visited the South, yet who wanted to be recognized as the leading composer of what then was called "Ethiopian music" for mass publication. Foster's published lyrics reflected his romanticized [and racist] image of a mournful slave's lament at love lost. Once freed from paper, his words evolved into a folksy mishmash of whimsical and unrelated lyrics, perhaps including some ghost lyrics.

I like the sliding position changes. I don't always know when its best to change positions and when it is best to move horizontally on the fretboard.

One word… metronome. Has anyone else tried to play rhythm to this? You can’t. Mike… I love you, and have always loved your playing since I discovered you in the early ‘80’s. But please re-do this where it’s in time.

@@dirkn3952made of some nice wood maybe, but it sure barks - not in Marshall’s hands though. Orville had the better instruments, no doubt.

So, I've been interested in signing up to Mike's class, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Are arrangements of songs like this taught so that we can learn how to play it as Mike plays it? What I mean is, I want to get an in depth study of some of the awesome techniques he's using on this tune. I often feel with online classes like someone who's been given a recipe for a great dish - when you make it, it's similar to the original, but the person who gave you the recipe obviously left out a bunch of stuff. I really don't want to do that, I want to get the tools to do exactly what Mike is doing there.

The difference with this is you can submit any questions and videos of your playing directly through the website for Mike to review and respond to, and he will show you anything you want to know. Also, you can search for whatever tunes or techniques you're working on and check out other videos exchanges with students that cover it.

Rob, I cannot recommend joining enough. Mike is a great teacher and it led to my travelling to the US twice from the UK to music camps where I got to meet Mike and study with him in person. He's not only a stunning player but a great guy as well.

Angeline the Baker was written by Stephen Foster. The instrumental version, Angelina Baker, is an adaptation of the original tune. The author is unknown.

Probably many "authors" .Folks over the last 150 years worked at this tune. This a good example of how "the folk" improve a formal tune and make informal by improvisation. Ear to ear throught the generations, we now get tune with alll the rough edges worn off like water over a stone . :)
