Shadow

Күн бұрын

The song played during the mid-episode montage in Better Call Saul's Season 6, Episode 11 (Breaking Bad).
Reasoned verse, some prose or rhyme
Lose themselves in other times
And waiting hopes cast silent spells
That speak in clouded clues
It cannot be a part of me
For now it's part of you
Careful plays on fields
That seem to vanish
When they're in between
And softly as I walk away
In freshly tattered shoes
It cannot be a part of me
For now it's part of you
Sunshine, ragtime
Blowing in the breeze
Midnight looks right
Standing more at ease
Silhouettes and figures stay
Close to what he had to say
And one more time, the faded dream
Is saddened by the news
It cannot be a part of me
For now it's part of you
Sunshine, ragtime
Blowing in the breeze
Midnight looks right
Standing more at ease
Silhouettes and figures stay
Close to what he had to say
And one more time, the faded dream
Is saddened by the news
It cannot be a part of me
For now it's part of you
It cannot be a part of me
For now it's part of you

After watching Breaking Bad and BCS, i'm 100% convinced that Vince Gilligan is the prophesized Jesus of Television. i feel so lucky to watch the genius of this storyteller first hand. His understanding of music, emotion and visual motifs on screen is unparalleled. This montage was perfect, as were so many before it. Remember the season opening in BCS with "Address Unknown" by the ink spots? Just storytelling gold.

Between this obscure acoustic version, the meaning of the song, the montage it plays over, the fact that Mike Nesmith passed recently, and that I'm a huge Monkees fan, I gotta say this was one of the most melancholy and perfect songs for that scene. I always see something deep in dogs when they’re on TV or in real life. The dog’s face in this episode, especially during this part, was wondering what the hell is his owner doing. It is also true when the dog is barking as Gene barges into Jeff’s garage angry with Buddy.

Such a bittersweet song for a bittersweet montage. Gene is ethically and morally deteriorating as he gets off on the high of his Saul persona, he wants more. He keeps doing the same scam but it’s not enough, he needs more money. He’ll do anything to achieve it, regardless of the repercussions. That phone call to Kim was a one-way ticket to the hell that Gene will never bounce back from. For some reason, I still feel bad for him, even though he did scam a bunch of people…his bad choice road never ended, it just keeps going.

Keep coming back to this version. And man the more I mull it over the more apparent it becomes how apt the lyrics are to the story. "And one more time the faded dream Is saddened by the news It cannot be a part of me For not it's a part of you" How Kim left that part of her behind which was woven with him and now festers in the new side of him. Also him hearing on the phone about Kim who was asking about him to no conclusion. Very fitting and poignant in my opinion

This song and it’s original meaning is beautiful, and in Better Call Saul it takes on an entirely new meaning and it’s also beautiful and depressing. Btw apparently this song was inspired by a time Mark Twain was discussing with another author(forget the name) about making a sequel to Tom Sawyer. The other writer urged him not to do this since Tom Sawyer was such a beloved character. So many kids already have their own adventures in their head of what happened to Tom and what he went on to. And writing a sequel would kind of diminish that. So therefore “It Cannot Be A Part Of Me For Now, It’s Part Of You” The songs really just about how once you release a piece of art it’s no longer yours since it means something to everyone who experiences it. And hey I heard this online so this could be bullshit but I still like the story/interpretation

So it turns out the reason this version isn’t on Spotify is because they bought the actual demo of this song and that’s why he verbally cues in the humming, they had to edit it out for the episode

@@jazzysoggy12 I think if they bought full ownership of this version it would’ve already been on there by now so it probably won’t be unless enough people ask

Thanks to my dad, even though I was born in 2003, I grew up with the Monkees. All of these songs are burned into my brain from all those thousands I’ve times I heard them played in the car. So it’s nice to have them get some exposure (although it is a double edge sword as I come off as a little less unique if it’s “the song from better call Saul” and that’s why they think I like it but oh well)

Ugh. Mike Nesmith. He was so beautiful. Love his voice. I wish I had the chance see him solo or with The Monkees before their passing. We still have Mickey❤❤❤

It was so amazing to hear Mike's voice, but so melancholy at the same time. I've been a fan since I was a kid. Gene has become the darkest version now. Brilliant song choice...how do they get everything so perfect?

What an amazing series. A lot of people I've talked to didn't like Nippy very much. But now that we've gotten the last episode? Idk, all those black and white episodes at the end hit a lot differently.

In the insider podcast talks about how he rushed to see the last Mike and Mickey show in LA (Thomas Schnaus the writer director of this episode) and had to take the red eye to Dallas then fly to Abq to get back to filming. Nez died a few weeks later. After using their Going down in breaking bad Dolenz contacted him on Twitter and they became friends. He visited the set he’s a big fan. He loved this song ever since hearing Nez do it solo in concert. The music supervisor spent a lot of time and effort getting the rights to this demo! Can you tell I’m obsessive about Saul 😂😂

Glad to see the Breaking Bad Universe continuing to use Monkees songs lol. Creator of these shows must be fans. They used Goin' Down in Breaking Bads handing down the tourch cooking scene.
