He saw the son that was taken away from him in Jesse and his granddaughter and wanted to do anything to protect both of them.

That’s what caused their relationship to deteriorate because after that event Gus planned to kill and replace Walter white with gale which led to Walter killing gale in an act of self preservation. If Walt hadn’t sent Jesse to kill gale (which was a last minute decision because Walter was actually going to kill gale himself) Jesse and Walter would be dead

I see a lot of people saying Mike took a half measure with Walt. He really didn’t. He had him at gunpoint and was ready to kill him until Walt pulled out the uno reverse card by getting Jesse to kill Gale instead. After that, Mike couldn’t really kill him because of Gus and even when Gus was gone, Mike needed Walt more than ever to keep the operation going so he could keep paying off his guys in prison and keep producing money for his Granddaughter. He knew full well what a time bomb he was, he even said so directly to his face. But he needed him, that’s the only reason he never killed Walt sooner.
