I wonder what the key to understanding this is. It seems like they are not the same degrees for each chord. Is it just to memorise and practice it and then it would make sense?

It is a cycle of 4ths movement. It’s a pattern that has been transposed in all 12 keys. If you watch the chords, you’ll notice that it goes C, F , Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B, E, A, D, G, then back to C. The idea is to take a lick/line/motif/etc., and cycle it. The easiest place to start would be to cycle scales, arpeggios, and pentatonics. Once you have that down, you can move on to transcribing lines, then cycle them.

What's that triplet arpeggio you're running down when you outline an altered chord? Great exercise btw, these are helping me unlock a huge part of what I love about the bebop sound! :D

Hmm there’s a few ways to think about that arpeggio. I’m thinking of it like the “cry me a river” lick from the parent melodic minor but instead of having the root it has the major 7. For example on a G alt it would be 9-maj7-5-b3-2 or Ab min (Bb-G-Eb-B-Bb). Could also be thought of as a triad with a chromatic neighbor tone added to the 5th degree. Hope that’s helpful! 🙏🙏thanks
