No question. An objectice fact. That's like saying don tardy is best drummer obituary has. Hes only one. But suffocation sound. Since early 90s. Especially drums n bass that's Mike Smith n homie who plays bass. They created that sound. Eric is good drummer. But he couldn't fuck with mike smith on his best day or with Donald Tardy.
@danielcharles84423 жыл бұрын
@@danielramosrezende8296 no doubt dave is good drummer. But understand what your looking at. Mike is holding sticks like a jazz drummer. Nobody plays drums like Mike Smith. Homie is a legend.

sharkwater sucks so bad he's left the band and isn't coming back for the new album. When he left he said it was cuz he had personal differences with the newer members of the band and he said not Terrence and Frank, so I guess it's Guy. and now Guy has left the band and won't be on the new album but they got a new drummer instead of Mike back :( There's guys who are faster than Mike Smith, do crazier fills and whatever, but I think he's definitely the most powerful drummer in extreme metal. His blasting on tracks like Bind Torture Kill and Dismal Dream made the songs so much heavier. Wish they could do an album with Mike and Doug Cerrito the old lineup cuz as good as some of the replacement members have been, I think Suffocation was at their best with Doug and Mike

Innovator yes , originator definitely no
@anthonytenkku433 жыл бұрын
@@Combustion47 What? Both terms are virtually the same thing, especially when discussing drumming. Also, considering the caliber of DM drumming that was around in 1991 (Death - Human, Morbid Angel - Blessed are The Sick, Carcass - Necroticism etc etc.) Mike's drumming on Effigy was an excellent mix of precision, speed, dynamics and power. He definitely set himself apart in that era and I believe its valid to say he is an innovator and originator.
@igorkuzmanovic59903 жыл бұрын
@@anthonytenkku43 Everything EXCEPT power. He clearly does not hit any rimshots or hit hard for that matter. But he's excellent at his work and has lots of groove.

This is just perfect ... speed, groove, balance, I hate how death metal today has become a BPM freakshow that focuses entirely on speed.

It is the groove that sets Mike Smith apart. Many are faster and more technical but Smith combined brutal drums with lots of groove.

It’s become ridiculous with who can go fastest and abuse the shit out of overly synthesized trigger sounds, barely tapping the heads. You can tell mike is pounding the skins hard and his sound is authentic.

arguably he is, trust me he can do the same show off drumrolls as what Mike Portnoy does at ease, but Mike Smith is a huge innovator at death metal drumming, Cannibal Corpse were already around in the early 90's and people started to think there's no way further in brutality, yet this guy took it to a new level. Mike Portnoy couldn't do that

Nah, he's renowned for playing loud. I think a lot of it is to do with the fact that he focuses on maintaining velocity rather than just going as fast as possible. Also remember that he is very focused on being as strong on one side as he is the other. He does things like alternate the snare hits between his left and right hand to maintain the same power throughout. Pretty cool. Gotta give him props!
