This is my video essay analysing how Norm MacDonald as Pigeon makes Mike Tyson Mysteries work. Because for those who've never heard of the show, Mike Tyson Mysteries is one of the best-hidden comedies on television and a large part of that comes from the hilariously brilliant mind of Norm MacDonald
Because despite being an alcoholic, sexually depraved, sarcastic character - Pigeon is the linchpin of what makes me want to watch the show. And even though it's a show that ultimately feels pointless and often makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, what's important is the humour that carries the almost meaningless story along and for me, Pigeon's humour is the best part of it.
This is my video explaining why.

What is Mike Tyson Mysteries?
Mike Tyson Mysteries is an American animated television series produced by Hanna Barbera and Warner Brothers for Adult Swim. The show follows the fictional misadventures of boxer/actor Mike Tyson, the ghost of the Marquess of Queensberry, Tyson's adopted daughter, and an alcoholic talking pigeon, as they solve mysteries around the world.
In the style of I Am the Greatest: The Adventures of Muhammad Ali, Jonny Quest, and Mr. T, the show also borrows heavily from the 1983-86 Ruby-Spears produced Mister T featuring actor/wrestler Laurence Tureaud as himself as well as 1970's Hanna-Barbera productions such as Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and The Funky Phantom. Targeted at a much older demographic than those children-oriented cartoons, the show contains adult language and concepts in the manner of Family Guy, South Park, and many other Adult Swim shows. While each episode involves a mystery as a framing device, they are often ignored entirely while the plot takes a completely different (and often oddball) direction as the mysteries are rarely solved and episodes sometimes end on cliffhangers that are never resolved.
On December 10, 2014, Adult Swim renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on November 1, 2015. A third season premiered on May 14, 2017, and the remaining Season 3 episodes aired from March 4, 2018 to May 13, 2018. The fourth season premiered on June 30, 2019.
List of characters from the show include:
Mike Tyson (voiced by himself) - A retired boxer who now solves mysteries. He is portrayed as being wildly out of touch with reality, confusing a chess Grandmaster with the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, or Elon Musk with Elton John, thinking a binary code spells out 'Ooo', and eating junk food without realizing he's on a diet. He has a reputation for doing unusual things like taking an oatmeal bath with cooked oatmeal, owning a pet grizzly bear, and using mosquitoes to help him sleep, along with pronouncing the names of many other characters incorrectly, even by calling his own daughter Yang or Yee instead of Yung.
Pigeon (voiced by Norm Macdonald) - An alcoholic, sexually depraved, sarcastic pigeon. He is a former human who was turned into a pigeon by his ex-wife as a curse for cheating on her. His real name is revealed to be Richard, although everyone still calls him Pigeon. Pigeon is disliked by Marquess and Yung Hee, but Tyson is seemingly oblivious to his obnoxious nature.
Yung Hee Tyson (voiced by Rachel Ramras) - Mike's adopted daughter. Born in 1998, she was left by her birth mother on Mike's doorstep when she was a baby. A running gag in the series is Yung being repeatedly mistaken for a boy.
Marquess of Queensberry (voiced by Jim Rash) - The deceased real life father of modern boxing, the Marquess of Queensberry, is an alcoholic, narcissistic and flamboyant ghost who provides Mike with intellectual advice. The Marquess portion of his name is pronounced "Marcus" and rendered as if it is his actual name, instead of a title.

Our society has reduced beauty to shallowness. When he says "shallow" he's just saying what he expects others to think about it. But he doesn't really care, the pigeon is beautiful and he's drawn to it, and that's what matters. As a bird lover, I'm totally with him on this. I kiss my cockatiels everyday because they are so beautiful and I love them.

Literally norm McDonald is an enigma think about it. He was born in the right and wrong era. If he was a younger dud making jokes he would kill buuuut if he wasn't born the era that he was, he wouldn't have the same nuggets of solid joke gold that he has now. His era didn't embrace him as much as they should have cause he was so crude at times but the man is a genius at just making up jokes! Seeing him make 2 bullseyes blindfolded in a row is mindblowing, but you look at his face he has a slight smirk, but if that wasnt what he expected to happen, youd probly see him cheer, or dance around and"whoo!" @@motioninart It’s an anime which bombed upon initial release because it was a very bland episodic mystery show with poorly done horror. The studio that produced it felt so little attachment to it that they gave the English localization team free reign to change the script as much as they wanted. They rewrote the script completely, turning it into a dark comedy show with mystery still present, but taking a back seat. This new version did much, much better. So much so that it became culturally significant to the western anime scene. It doesn’t have *exactly* the same flavor of humor, but to a degree that’s to be expected because there can be only one Norm Macdonald. It’s a little lowbrow for some adults, but I recommend giving it a try nonetheless.

Hmm. I haven't seen the show, but what this reminds me of is Aqua Teen Hunger Force, where often the stories made no sense, but they had the structure of normal stories. By substituting arbitrary elements in place of the expected characters, events, and locations etc. it emphasized how all people need in order to process what they're watching as a legitimate story is the form of a story. You can replace almost any specific thing as long as the structure is intact, and people will feel like they've watched a comprehensible, even meaningful story.

This show is incredibly underrated. I refused to watch it just based off a couple quick commercials on TV years ago, but good lord is it great. Mike is just Mike, but plays a dumber version of himself, and then they just let go of the reigns on Norm and let him do his thing it felt like. The writers for this show are out of their minds and in such a beautiful way.

You know what? It might be a tie between Mike and Pigeon. I love how Mike doesn't give a crap about anything, but unlike Pigeon he doesn't intentionally insult anyone, he's just unstoppable. You can't argue with him, or question his actions, people just kinda let him be. He's frank, often inconsiderate, but always frank. The ghost is annoying, but that's intentional and they play with it. I don't like dealing with people who will talk your ear off not caring if you give a crap. But do I like when the others screw with him, so I wouldn't get rid of him. He works. I like it when Young shows some skin. Doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, Pigeon's there to voice my thoughts.
