Who i can't stand is the "101st Chairborne" who are just spectating, not in the ring, including the announcers who so wrongly denigrate boxers like Duran and Tyson . Duran and Tyson came from very poor and harsh backgrounds . Tyson was a street child who use to get beat up everyday . I understand how he can be so crazy at times and at others so Wise . Roberto should have never quit but the genesis of why he did lays with his promoter for agreeing to rematch only four months later. Everyone knew that Roberto liked to party, eat - a lot, and between fights he'd put on thirty to forty pounds. If he had another two months to prepare than he would have never quit, he still may have lost but he would not have quit. Ray Leonard fought a brilliant fight in the rematch and between his antics (bolo punches etc.) his exceptional boxing, and his refusal to enter into a firefight with Duran, Roberto became frustrated and quit.

Well said brother. The first fight was close and could have gone either way. Give credit to Duran for moving up in weight. I respect Sugar for standing his ground and going toe to toe, but it was the wrong tactic against Duran. An immediate rematch and a mobile style was smart. Sugar may have won the first fight with this style as well. I think he wanted to prove he was the better man by beating Duran at his own game. I think its very easy to understand why Roberto Duran stopped fighting. He was partying and eating after the first Duran Leonard fight and had to cut too much weight in a short amount of time. Then he ate way to much after the weigh-in the day of the fight, causing him to get sick during the fight. Really look at the fight, it was close or even and Sugar ray did not "have his number" like people said. Duran was an all-time great like Leonard, and had a win on him. Leonard had no power to knock out Duran even though Duran was a true lightweight in his prime. Leonard was great too, but won most of his fights by tapping and running, but since he was a big ticket seller he got the decisions.

This was one of the greatest rivalries in the history of boxing. If you want to make excuses for either man going into the first two fights you could do, easily. You could argue Leonard's ego lost him the first fight, that Duran got under his skin so he tried to beat him at his own game and fight flat footed, in the pocket and he lost because of it. You could argue that Duran was out of shape going into the rematch, that he partied too hard after the first, that the weight cut killed him, etc. At the end of the day they both fought and they both lost. Simple as. They settled the score in the trilogy fight and Leonard proved to be the better boxer. He had that sweet science down to a T.
