Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield, billed as Finally, was a professional boxing match fought between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson for the WBA heavyweight championship on November 9, 1996, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The bout was Tyson's first defense of the WBA title that he had won from Bruce Seldon on September 7 of that year.
The referee officiating the fight was Mitch Halpern. The fight was promoted by Don King Productions and carried on pay-per-view by Showtime.
The bout was the first fight pitting the two boxers against each other and it would be followed up with a controversial rematch.

Tyson continually runs in with his head and gets pissed that Evander just keeps his head down stands his ground and takes the onslaught. Consequently Tyson gets a self inflicted head butt.

Yup, and in R6 Tyson goes in with the most obvious headbutt out of frustration of being outboxed, and comes off worse. Tyson later admitted to this. Yet still the whiney Tyson fanboys claim ‘Holyfield butts’ no, he was just better.

@@bumface1810you need to sort yourself a bit. Holyfield is a known head butter in many of his fights. There’s an art to sneaking that stuff in and making it look accidental. Evander slips a head butt in then follows immediately with a low shot to distract from the butt. It’s a practiced movement. He used it about 20 times in the second fight with Mike.

@@rodneywilliams1300 they didn’t stop Mike either. They just pissed him off and he reacted way worse than the others who just took it. Holyfield said he was more prepared for Tyson than any other fighter he ever fought. He watched and studied every single one of Tyson's fights. He knew Tyson's style better than anyone. So he spent most of the night anticipating Tyson's moves and countering them. Tyson was thoroughly crushed in both fights.

I love how Holyfield didn't accept that heart attack narrative during the Moorer fight. He could have used that as an excuse for the loss, and yes he did have a bad shoulder that caused him a lot of pain in that fight which he mentioned, but he never tried to take anything away from Michael Moorer's victory despite not being near 100% in that fight. Holyfield then came back after the second close loss to Bowe, and had a second prime that culminated in defeating Tyson, and eventually gaining revenge against Moorer in 1997, and reigning as champion yet again. When people thought Holyfield was done, he would always prove them wrong, even after losing his IBF, and WBA straps to Lennox Lewis.

He never had a heart attack. He was having palpitations. His doctor back then, after assessing him said his symptoms were common with the use of HGH Human Growth Hormone. This is factual the doctor was on tv back then in 1994 i believe. After he stopped using he came back with this 'Jesus Saved him and cured him nonsense'. He apparently continued using but lower dosage. You can see he used his appearance, especially Tyson through to the end of his career was completely different, his head was bigger which again is common.

Don Turner put it simply and perfectly, "YOU'RE THE BULLY!" This is a past-his-prime Holyfield who looked near death before this fight. Not only was he older than Tyson, he had major health problems and fought through hellacious wars with Riddick Bowe (those fights were really incredible). The fact that Holyfield had NO fear of Mike and was physically stronger (not the bigger puncher) and able to push him back in clinches takes Tyson out of his game. Tyson could not fight going backwards, his style isn't really meant for it. Evander (and his great team featuring Tommy Brooks and Don Turner) knew this. This is a blue print on how to beat Tyson... the trouble is few heavyweights had the will and fortitude to implement it.

I've watched this video plenty of times. The first 10 or 11 times I really didn't like hearing Bobby Czyz constantly talking about about Holyfield getting knocked out by Mike Tyson. As late as the middle of the 5th round Czyz states, "If Holyfield stands in there with Mike... end of the night". Now as I'm watching this video for the umpteenth time, those Bobby Czyz predictions have become entertaining to me. It's the exact same thing when I'm watching Ali vs. Foreman "The Rumble In The Jungle". Joe Frazier's constantly saying that Foreman will walk Ali down. Criticizing Ali for laying on the ropes. Meanwhile, Jim Brown is pointing out that Ali is inflicting damage on Foreman even though he is on the ropes. The video clearly exposes that Bobby Czyz obviously wanted Tyson to destroy Holyfield. Especially all through the 5th round, Tyson was constantly landing multiple power punches on Holyfield! No one mentioned that Holyfield took ALL of those lethal 'Iron' Mike Tyson punches with 'no questions asked'. At least Ferdie Pacheco said he was surprised at how easily Holyfield was taking Tyson's punches in the beginning of the 6th round. I don't understand how little attention to the 6th round knock down received. "We are seeing Mike Tyson tested" is all that was said. Are you kidding me!?! What should have been said is that Holyfield easily walked through Tyson's punches. And Pacheco shockingly stating that Holyfield is resting (while in a clinch) in a fight with Mike Tyson!?! Seriously!?! I have a picture of Holyfield in Hawaii on a hammock watching a perfect Hawaiian sunset. Even as late as the 9th round Czyz says that the fight will be a draw. The delusion persists.

What Mike could've done was his the jab and keep Holyfield outside instead of coming fwd. Everytime Holyfield clinched Tyson thats when Tyson shoulder went for the body shots. He should've kept throwing punchs instead of trying to go for one punch. This was definitely not Tyson at his best but physical wise he was still in his prime. Tyson didnt listen to his corner men and just abandoned the strategy. It would've been a closer fight but that stoppage was very premature Tyson want hurt. Holyfield had a perfect gameplan and would've always been a problem for Tyson no matter when they fought Holyfield had the style.

It was the classi right to the body right to the head signature of Mikes. That and the very first punch are the only ones I can remember him landing clean. I think Holyfield hurt him more than most was the speed of his punches. Holyfield could throw fast combinations like the best of the them and Tyson was barely used to one punch coming back to him let alone 3 or 4. @@MichaelWorthy25 100%. I’ve always been a fan of Mikes and always will be but he’s incredibly overrated and probably the weakest mentally of any heavyweight champion. The Bite fight exposed him completely. You can’t hide from who you are in the ring. It’ll show you for what you are, a tough guy, a coward, dirty, cheating, lion hearted. That night was the real deep down ghetto Mike who grew up the scared little boy being bullied on the streets, the guy who Rob old ladies and beat people up later for their chains. That was the real Mike and I have no time for that man. Yes today he has changed and has become a very positive person. But he still most definitely has that side to him, and it drives me nuts when people call him this super intelligent messiah like genius who will spout life lessons and anecdotes. He just parrots what he reads. None of what he says comes f from his own head. Yes he’s a smart guy but most of what he talks about isn’t that deep. Saying things you’ve read in books doesn’t make you intelligent, just means you have a good memory. And the frequency in which he breaks down in tears at the drop of a hat, talking about how “If that old Mike came back, hell would be coming with him….” Nonsense. He showed us that side of him already and like the fighter, he was just a bully who thrived of people fearing him. Never if that Tyson did come back, what would he accomplish other than getting himself arrested or killed. He’s kinda become a parody of himself now and I just can’t take the guy seriously anymore. I he’s a very fascinating person but definitely not as deep and intellectual as people paint him. His fanboys paint him as this God like superhuman but he’s just a guy who was raised in a terrible environment, for while at least. He always talks about being raised on the streets, and that may be so, but at 13 he was rescued and adopted by Cus, who took him aa way from that. Even when he went to prison, it was mostly full of young white kids who were in for drugs etc. it’s was t like he was sent to Rikers Island or San Quentin or any dangerous as hell place like that. He is life from 13 onwards was very pampered and safe, surrounded by people who cared for him and kept on the straight and narrow. It was purely by his own stupidity that he would go back to the ghetto or bring the ghetto mentality with him everywhere else and get into fights, grab women and generally act like a pig. Especially after he lost to Holyfield and when he fought Lewis. That version of Mike was absolutely abhorrent and disgusting and I’m genuinely perplexed that people just overlook those years and paint Mike like he’s someone to look up to and emulate. Even now he still says some stuff that is pretty crazy but thankfully it’s very rare. I guess it’s mostly young clueless guys who never lived through his career who just think Mike was this God amongst men when that simply wasn’t the case.

What struck me about this fight is how Holyfield used Tyson's momentum against him, he was catching Mike as he was coming in, doubling the impact of the punch. It was a genius strategy and he was able to execute it due to great timing and his ability to take a punch. He likely would have used this strategy back in 91, but Tyson was more "live" then, so I wouldn't be surprised if Tyson was able to wear Holyfield down. I am convinced Tyson was no where near prime in 96, he reacted differently to getting hit, he was taking bombs against Rudduck in 91, yet in this fight he was briefly hurt in round 2. He just didn't have the same confidence or fight mentality. He did the smart thing in the rematch, he was heading for a beating again. do I agree with what he did? no, it was very disappointing, but he couldn't win that fight, so he preserved his legacy a bit as many still say Tyson was coming back during that rematch, he left it open ended. I think Tyson knew what he was doing there.

He definitely knew what he was doing. He was playing the victim the entire time. “he was butting me, my kids are gonna be scared of me”with a little cut on your eyelid.?”, he’s been butting me for two fights, he quit, he didn’t want to fight, but I’ll fight him right now….” Should his mentality was that of a bully when he came out of prison. He won every fight post prison through fear alone. Once he met someone who didn’t fear him, he folded. He fought terribly when he came out of prison. He was the same fighter physically but not mentally and fighting is 80% mental. He was the weakest fighter mentally out of all the heavyweight greats. Even in his prime he would get frustrated and clinch aLOT, especially if he couldn’t KO someone early. Without the fear factor, Tyson just wasn’t the same fighter. He acted like a coward in this fight. You get purposefully DQd, then say you want to fight the guy??? Why didn’t you fight him when you had the chance?? He did, well he tried, but Holyfield was just too good for him. Holyfield fought the perfect fight against Tyson. Never backed up once, pushed Tyson back and kept him on his back foot, where Tyson was never great at because he never had to. He was so aggressive and scary everyone backed up away from him. His style was made to be aggressive. He was a fantastic defensive fighter in his prime but as soon as he stopped working on defence he didn’t have one. He could slip a punch or two yes but not a combo from he likes of Holyfield, who was always a brilliant combo puncher. This fight showed the world the Tyson of old was gone forever. I’d have KILLED to see this fight when they were both in their prime. Tyson maybe would’ve taken it then, but we’ll never know. Remember Holyfield took George Foreman’s punches, so I’m pretty confident he would’ve been able to take a prime Tysons. It was Tyson speed that knocked out most. You never seen his punches coming. Tyson style, mentality, outlook etc, was never meant to last long. He was like a shooting star who burned out as quickly as it peaked. Boy he was fantastic to watch back then, but I truly believe in any other era, he wouldn’t have been as successful as he was. Ali would have schooled him, Foreman would have destroyed him, even Frazier maybe. He was just way too small for those guys. Look at Tysons record…..every great fighter he fought, he lost to. His first 30 pr so fights were against journeymen and nobodies. He was fed tomato cans till he fought Berbick, who wasn’t exactly amazing in his own right. He struggled with an old Larry Holmes until he caught him. Holyfield beat him. Douglas beat he shit outta him and Holyfield beat him easily. He struggled with Ruddock because of sheer size and power, in which the first fight which was one of the worst stoppages in boxing. Don’t get me wrong he had a great chin, but he didn’t take many hard punches by big punching fighters because he was so good defensively. Bruno hurt him, Ruddock hurt him, Douglas knocked him out. Tyson was amazing for the sport when he appeared because the Heavyweight division had basically died when Ali retired. It was an incredibly weak division in his era. He was incredible to watch no doubt, but Mike is one of the most overrated fighters in the heavyweight division. Ali vs him would have been a joke.

@@fromunderthekilt6310 that is a good Tyson post, fairly balanced, maybe a little critical but the points are hard to argue with. I'd agree he was a complete bully post prison and he relied on his reputation. I thought he was pretty much a con man, mentally ruined, humiliated by prison and didn't really care. he had me fooled with the new measured Tyson attitude but it all fell apart after Holyfield. I never really forgave the ear bite, I'd never been so disappointed by a sporting event. but as I said, Tyson was smart, he knew he would rather been seen as a monster than a loser, and to this day I don't think he really faces that, he comes near to it but then goes back to the "I was crazy". I think he was perfectly sane and knew by ending it like that, his fans would give him an out. I cant argue with him being weaker minded than other greats, but its easy to forget how young he was, like 19, 20 at champ level, how could he have that lived in toughness? I don't think Tyson was without some grit though, he did show toughness in loss against Buster, he continued until he literall could not, he also got a KD. and against Ruddock he was nearly out at one point in that rematch, but he maintained his desire and kept going until he won. I think with Tyson it was a case of him being so physically gifted he didn't need to high echelon mental strength. I believe he could beat most the old greats apart from Ali, Foreman, Holmes and maybe a few others, and that's not bad. Foreman against Lyle showed me that George just would hammer Tyson until he won, Mike just didn't have that fortitude when under that type of pressure. At the end of the day I rank him the most exciting heavyweight of all time, but at the lower end of the top 10, or even 15 overall. Thank for a great post

@@ritchski1 thanx man. Appreciate the kind words. I completely agree with everything you said. Oh I definitely was t saying he didn’t have grit. He took a BAD beating from Douglas and never gave up. Pre prison he had a great chin and had no quit in him. I’ve never seen a fighter yelp or say “ow” when getting a cut worked on, both which he did against Holyfield and Lewis. He took a good beating from Lewis too but I think that was just him on auto pilot knowing he had to take it and not quit as he knew he had lost everything and the only he had left was his ego. And without doubt he was the most exciting heavyweight ever……but definitely on the lower end of all time Heavyweights. It’s good to read someone’s opinion on Tyson who actually knows his career and not just a fanboy who thinks he was Superman. He was just way too small for the big greats. Even Cus used to day he wished Mike was built like Ken Norton as if he was he would’ve probably been undefeated and he best of all time. But what would have been and what was are different things and it just wasn’t meant to be. Everyone would says “if Cus didn’t die etc, or if he didn’t go to prison or took training seriously yadda yadda yadda…”…..part of being a fighter is being disciplined. It was Mike himself who chose to leave Rooney, chose to join Don King, chose to surround himself with YES men and not train. Chose to hire trainers who had no idea what they were doing. That’s all part of being a professional fighter. He wanted to be in control of himself and he was. He engineered his own downfall and that’s his own fault. It would have been great to see what he could have accomplished if Cus stayed with him through his whole career, but honestly, I think Mike would have ended up going off the deep end regardless. Once he became champ, he did the worst thing anyone can do…….he started believing he was invincible, which nobody truly is. I personally am glad Cus died when he did because if he saw how Mike ended up I think the shame would’ve killed him.

Nice pivots in close, & punching off those pivots, by Holyfield - he didn't go straight back, which would have given Tyson momentum. Tyson kept having to reset to land anything. Holyfield also walked Tyson back during the clinches, which prevented Tyson from punching with any power during those sequences. We didn't know it back then, but Tyson had the perfect style for Holyfield. Not sure how successful those tactics would have been against a Tyson in his prime, but all we've got to go on is this fight. Some comments below about Holyfield holding, but Tyson was initiating many of those holds as well, because he was getting out-fought on the inside.

Can see right off bat in 1St round Tyson unable to turn southpaw when he had good opportunities to counter Holyfield attacks and halt his momentum. The right hooks up/down and right uppercuts from southpaw is what made him so dangerous and versatile. His athleticism was so freaky early on he could do it like breathing. Later he became conventional, lost a lot of spring and stamina in his lower body. His legs visibly smaller

The commentating of this fight was so bias for Tyson, especially that jew Bobby Czyz, he was nut hugging Tyson and making so many excuses for Tyson the entire lead up and match. Holyfield won this fight, but I did not enjoy all the clinching and wrestling throughout the fight. Anytime Tyson tried to go inside, they both ended up clinching. This proved to be a very advantageous strategy for Holyfield since it neutralized Tyson's power and explosion. Tyson became so top heavy as a boxer after prison, he hardly used his legs for defense, nor to create his explosion anymore. Tyson became a stiff mummy after prison, just a KO specialist. This fight was the complete dichotomy of two entirely different men meeting together. Holyfield, the man of God/Christ, the underdog who many were saying was done vs Tyson, the sinfully pride pugilist that seemed revel in the darkness. Only God could have set this fight up. To me, this was the pinnacle of these two fighters' careers because it changed everything for them afterwards. I loved Holyfield's post fight analysis' because all he did was praise The Most High and Christ, he gave all credit and glory to the Holiest of Holiest. A lot of athletes give fake praise and thanks to God, but Holyfield always gave as much credit to God as possible, and I really respect that.... for only God is great.

With 1 minute left to go in the 9th round Czyz asks, "What were the odds of a draw?". Seriously!?! This after Ferdie Pacheco noted that 'Iron' Mike Tyson wanted to quit after that second head-butt near the end of the 7th round. How many times has Tyson's face expressed that amount of extreme pain; during a heavyweight championship fight, from that second head-butt? Anyone with eyes could see Tyson didn't want any more of Holyfield. Women that have endured child birth would have laughed at what 'Iron' Mike considered pain from a head-butt.

This fight exposed Tyson for the bully he was. No he wasn’t prime Mike here, but hence his skills eroded, he won fights with fear and his power. As soon as someone stood up to him, he folded. You can see how much complaining he was doing to the ref, the blatant butt he gave Holyfield to try and get DQd. You could tell even during the announcements how much getting booed effected him. He was a very mentally weak fighter when he came out of prison. After prison Tyson won of his reputation alone. Once Holyfield beat him and beat him badly, he lost that aura he had. Once that was gone, he was done as a fighter. Holyfield embarrassed Mike in this fight and the second fight he knew he couldn’t beat him so he bit. Even then when he bit him, waited for HF to turn his back, then pushed him. That’s the actions of a coward. And no no one who goes into the ring is a coward, but that action was cowardly. Holyfield was just that guy Mike would’ve never beaten no matter if they fought 100 times. He was Foreman’s Ali. Frazier Foreman. Pacquios Mayweather. Mike was destroyed on this night and as a fan of his, I was devastated at the time, but watching all these years later, he got exactly what was coming to him.

Nothing but facts. But, the Tyson fanboys will say otherwise, because they love his power and speed, but not his new-found humility. Tyson even admitted that Holyfield beat him (twice). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iuCnhKWD3pq3j6s.html Tyson accepted it and moved on. The fanboys haven't. That says a lot about who the so called fans are. Tyson can tell the fanboys in his own words that Holyfield beat him and they still won't listen. Tyson fanboys are as bad as Don King.

@@MichaelWorthy25 100%. Most people get carried away when they talk about Tyson, yes the man was an absolute animal in his prime but it was an extremely short prime where his calibre of fighters just weren’t that special. Yeah he could only beat the guys in front of him, but he didn’t fight a lot of fighters that may have given him trouble. Lewis, Tommy Morrison, Foreman, Bowe. All those guys would have given him trouble, mostly Lewis Bowe and Foreman due to their shred size and strength. Mike was very lucky he was in the era he was, as it made him look way better than he actually was. When people say Tyson is the best fighter ever, I have to laugh. He’s not even the best Heavywight ever, not even close. People just see his highlights and think he’s unstoppable and it was only because Cus died he fell off, but I believe even if Cus lived and he stayed with him for his whole career, with Rooney training him, he still would’ve ended up being beaten because he wasn’t disciplined enough for a long career. The man was basically an alcoholic during his entire career. He lacked the mental toughness it takes to keep training hard daily like he did at the very beginning. His ego would’ve eventually come out regardless and it would’ve ended the same way. Even if Holyfield and he fought in his prime, I still think Holyfield would’ve beat him. Evander wasn’t intimidated by anyone, had a granite chin and a will to win more than any other Heavyweight I can think of. And that goes back to my first point, as soon as Mike realized he wasn’t gonna lay down and get blown over, Mike would have got frustrated and either lashed out, or knocked out. Its crazy how Tyson himself said Evander and Dougles won fair and square but his fanboys will say the complete opposite and Tyson is basically The Hulk and could’ve beaten anyone, even Ali, which is a joke. Ali would’ve played with Mike.

@@fromunderthekilt6310 Yes sir. You better preach. And another thing while we're on the topic: I won't take anything away from Mike Tyson. He's a changed man far from the troubled brawler he used to be. I will say that he was warned by Cus to stay away from boxers like Holyfield, but I guess he needed the money. Fanboys like to say that Holyfield was juicing, but they don't like to talk about how Tyson admitted to using other people's urine to pass drug tests. Plus Holyfield fought Riddick Bowe three times and Holyfield fought George Foreman. Tyson stayed away from Bowe (with good reason) and he openly refused to fight Foreman, because fighters like Ali, Foreman, and Bowe were trained to wreck guys like Tyson. Even David Tua would have been a decent match, but Tyson avoided him too. I'm agreeing with you that with Tyson, there was a lot of hype because he sold out fights and he put behinds in seats. No doubt about that. Also, most Tyson fanboys don't know or understand that Holyfield had Tyson's number even back int eh early 1908s. Holyfield asked Tyson if he wanted to spar at Olympic Training Camp and Holyfield had Tyson in the corner and Tyson couldn't get out. They had stop top the session because Holyfield was going to hurt Tyson. I'm glad somebody understands boxers and how all of this works. Everything you said above is true. Even Tyson admitted that he wouldn't stand a chance against Ali. Ali would have toyed with Tyson and finished him off in round 10 or 11. Bowe would have jabbed with the left and finished Tyson with a overhand right to his head. Foreman would have jabbed, straight right cross and blocked Tyson when he came in. Tyson fanboys just don't know, nor do they want to know. But that's why true boxing fans except reality and the reality is Tyson was a brawler, but Holyfield was a technical fighter who was trained to wreck boxers who did the things that Tyson did in the ring. But again, even if Tyson says it in his own words, the fanboys dismiss it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs1znph4rq63f5s.html LOL. Anyway, good post above bro. Facts all day.

Every single time Mike Tyson got inside Holyfield would hold him or try to headbutt him, Mike Tyson also didnt have the same discipline, rage and energy as he did with Kevin and Cus, and the crowd booing him and cheering Holyfield had mental effects on both of them. I think Holyfield was a dirty fighter who wanted to use advantage of Tysons height to butt him and Tyson wasnt in his peak state of mind whatsoever
