@@jetcitysinatra7300 I think Busey's performance was carefully choreographed and played. Buddy Holly could keep a crowd's attention due to the novelty of himself, the songs and the genre of rock 'n' roll itself (not to mention his flawless performance). Gary Busey was performing, albeit through the lens of a director's camera, for a 1978 audience. Maybe it would've been just as interesting if he mimicked Holly's stage performance, but I tend to believe that the moviegoers of 1978 might've found it a little lackluster. Seattle! @@scottkenny6770 I've wondered about this. I think I read one review of Buddy's final studio recordings (True Love Ways, Raining in My Heart, It Doesn't Matter Anymore), and the reviewer said that Buddy was done at that point, as far as creativity, and he was destined to become one of those early 60s crooners like Bobby Vinton, putting out sappy, orchestrated ballads. I disagree, though. Buddy seemed to really take advantage of the studio. I like Buddy's final studio recordings. I think, with time, maybe by 1963 or 64, Buddy would have recorded the early 60s equivalent of Sgt. Pepper, an album that would have been technically and musically groundbreaking for its time. Buddy would have probably been one of the few 50s artists to have major success in the 60s.

@@thehighllama8101 I agree with you. He was brilliant as his own producer and arranger and his songwriting speaks for itself. If you dig deep in to his catalogue he did some amazing stuff. The early Beatles (Hamburg) were practically a Buddy Holly cover band...before Lennon/McCartney became fully confident in their own songwriting. Once his commercial success, fame, reputation, bankability were asssured (which he was still striving for as he was being ripped off of royalties, etc and then died!!) I believe he would have been liberated to experiment far more, much the same way Brian Wilson did. Wilson gradually drifted from the Beach Boys, started to resent just shitting out short 2-3 minute pop hits and ballads (as brilliant as they are, the harmonies, etc), eschewed touring (guys like Glen Campbell filling in on the road for him) and desired more studio time, really digging down into composing, arranging, playing all of the instruments...and voila Pet Sounds.

We owe the existence of the Beatles to Buddy Holly and the Crickets, indirectly anyway. John Lennon despaired that a bespectacled kid like him could become a successful rock-and-roll star - until he saw Buddy Holly. The guys in the Beatles so loved Buddy and the Crickets that they based their name on them! So, not only the great and timeless music Buddy and the guys created, but their effect on subsequent performers. Whenever my wife and I take a road trip in the car, it is a given that Buddy's music is going with us. Nothing even needs to be said. We just love it.

Why is this year that's not even over yet ... any different that the years before. Is it just because it's an election year? I do not have an answer... but as for myself... I have never looked at the color of a person's skin as a negative. We are all human beings and we are all in the same situation with the Pandemic. I served for 37 years as a paramedic, much of it in the 'burbs of Kansas City, Missouri. Back in the late '80s or thereabouts we had occasion to answer a call reporting 'chest pains'... we found the patient- a middle-aged man- in his basement, the walls of which had some items that appeared to be 'music memorabilia' but of course our focus was on the patient. After we had treated & transported him to the hospital, one of the police officers who had come to the scene to see if we needed assistance ( standard procedure for our service) told us who he was: Nicky Sullivan, one of the original Crickets! I was old enough to know who Buddy Holly was, having heard his music as a kid- it was a nice 'brush with stardom'!

@@michaelfebbert737 He came to Bristol in England where I lived and my mother took me to see him. He was Electric, even as a 9 year old I knew I'd seen something special and I never looked back and have enjoyed being in various Bands.

raybede that must have been brilliant . I was only 6 when he died but I remember his music on the radio in real time . Grew up with tons of music in our house .saw many great acts from a pretty early age but I would have loved to to have seen seen Buddy . Love from Da Bronx

@@rossdemarco1206 Yes I was very lucky and also had a mother who thought it would be a good idea to take me to the concert. I suppose that is what you call a life changing moment (even at 9!) Love from the UK
