I am only 17 so I can’t do anything crazy because of the rule in pa having to be 18 to do all of the legal documents etc. though I do mow about 30 lawns

Started mine part time while working for another lawn care company. My boss actually helped me start mine and until this day we do work for each other and it’s worked out great for us.

They don’t necessarily care about your wife/life/goals… that reminds me of what I need to do again. Have the flexibility to work with someone who is cool with me doing my own thing as well. And hopefully both of us profiting from it and having great lives! ❤️💯🙏

I am coming into my second year of lawn care on the Gold Coast of Australia and am starting to pick up a lot more work, will definitely need to hire an employee at some point in the near future. the best piece of advice is that there is absolutely enough grass for all of us, we need to clean up the way local lawn care companies view competition. we should see all of us as a team, we make our living doing the same thing!

Started my business back in 2016 as part time while I worked at the bank got married in 2017 had my first daughter born in 2018 and that's when I decided to quit my bank job and go full time on the lawn and landscape business. I'm into the point where I'm being stretched and I'm ready to get a new truck so I can have my two guys take care of lawns while I start to build a landscaping crew. Will be great if we could have a face to face convo through zoom or something.

I’m addicted to mowing lawns as I would always watch commercial companies if they came on my street. Last year I got my first trimmer from Lowe’s and already had a blower so I decided to start my part-time lawn business as a 11 year old kid. This year is my 2nd lawn care season.

Honestly I needed to hear this. I just started a maintenance company on Trinidad in the Caribbean. I'm on week 2 and I've only have one customer. I'm advertising but I've got no more yet and I feel frustrated. I'm not about to give up or anything but it feels good to be reminded that all great successes start somewhere. Thank you truly.

@@xbebe Honestly, pretty nice. I have had several different customers and a lot of repeating business. I made money to upgrade my equipment and even started printing t-shirts on the side. I have far to go still but progress feels good.

I started during covid. I got laid off and didn't want to be at home all day. As soon as I closed on my house in May last year I decided to go full time. Still learning as I go but I've got two work trucks and two trailers so far

Thanks Mike for these videos. Love the content. An area I struggle with concerning growth and hiring is trusting guys with the equipment that we pay so much for - taking care of it, leaving it out to get stolen, the whole bit. I would love to see a video that addresses this. Thanks again.

New guy here, just in the research phase: Is mulching all the clippings just not industry standard? I see comments about having issues with dumping clippings and leaves etc. but why not just use mulching blades and be able to leave it all in the yard? I’ve read that is healthier for the soil too. So far my story is similar. I was part time year one and now I am full time year 2 trying to I figure out what the heck to do with all of my clippings and where to store my truck and trailer. HOA doesn’t allow trailers to be parked in driveway and the dump is 25 minutes away and cost $40 minimum. There literally are no storage units available or that I can back a trailer into. They stack the units parallel with each other and do not leave enough room to back a trailer straight in. It’s super frustrating. I’m still trying to figure out what to do. Year one - $15,000 (working only Friday and Saturday) Year two - on pace for $55,000+ I have a running a list of things I hate about my business and want to change during the off season. Do you still do coaching calls? Thanks mike.

Buy land, buy a car port or shed or small garage to store your stuff in there & dumb clippings in an open area & then burn them

Hi mike, i have 2 zero turns, a truck or a trailer. both are residential zero turns. the husqvarna is a half and half. should i use them for commercial?

Nothing wrong using residential to get started... all day use usually requires commercial grade equipment

Mike, I went full time this year and am now running a full solo route. I’ve been slowly buying equipment that I need in order to have another solo set up ready to go for next spring. A fear I am having when thinking of hiring an employee and building a route for them is what if all of a sudden they quit or leave me hanging and ive got customers relying on me to get their lawns done and I wouldn’t have a way of servicing them since my time would be full running my route as well? I hope that makes sense? If so I’d love your thoughts. Thank you!

1-3 employees is the HARDEST because of that vulnerability. Thats why I encourage to speed through that time.... and if you need to save some $$ so you can accelerate through that period, that is fine.

How do you have the confidence to go full time??? Did you have other money coming in to pay your bills?? I haven't ever heard of someone's reasoning behind their decision to go full time. How do you cut loose and go full time...and still grow the business. What was your plan for income if business dried up??

I sold my personal car (Mitsubishi Lancer) for $6K and that's what I used to get started... I had done lawn care since I was 11 years old though to pay for college

I have a lawn business, I see profits but I feel as I under charge. It's my first year, and I don't wanna charge by hours I put on the lawn I wanna charge by how many spare feet I have to do but I have no clue what to charge. Please tell me how to charge right. For a normal residential lawn I do 55 to 45 should I charge more or am I good. I don't do commercial or big lawns yet as I have a push mower and I just want to start going.

Start with tracking how long the lawns take you to mow every time.... do that for a couple months.... then determine the hourly rate you want to achieve. Multiply that by the time it takes to do the lawn and that is the price it should be at.... you will need to raise prices and tell the clients. We do it quite often. Or figure out a good production target based upon square feet.

Times easier to measure than square footage. Square footage isn't even the whole picture when it comes to lawns; some are big and wide open, some are small but a hassle to mow and have much more weed whacking. Some lawns are right on your route and you can take a little less for them just because you're already right there. Others have you going out of your way, so you have to price that in.

Got $6,000 in PPP funds from the SBA couple weeks ago. Bought a 50” 2007 troy bilt mustang zero turn for $800. Getting it out of the shop tomorrow after maybe a $300 repair. Started November 2020 with a push mower in the trunk of my 05 equinox. Really hype to see how much faster I can get these $50 yards done (hoping 30 mins tops) Biggest challenge right now is getting systems in place so the business can run without me being there. Mostly cuz I cant stand talking to customers lol. We have soo many customers calling all the time but backed up until ZT gets out of the shop and contractors show up to work when I schedule them or I do it myself. I’ll have to hire more lawn tech contractors/office/sales staff for sure so they can run the business eithout me being always there. I had some ideas that might work. Maybe you could offer some advice?

Try to avoid hiring a full time office person until you have at least 3-4 employees. Maybe part time office help? It dramatically increases overhead, especially if you have to rent an office too

You said 8 hours a day 5 days a week, technically that's 40 hours a week and would be considered fulltime to some, not partime.

If you’re making $1,000 a day and maybe $500 a profit why not stay there maintain that? You said “and then” you have to continue growing and buying more trucks trailers and equipment… that’s like a 150k a year. But then I guess you’re capped at that if you don’t grow huh? I guess you can be happy with it and live a good life there or make your entire life about it and keep expanding right? Just trying to see what’s the truth and pros and cons of the always growing mindset. It’s never enough right?

Depends on the goal of the owner. If someone wants to keep working in the field, then yes $150k-$200k revenue is a great place to stop growing
