John McPhee, widely known as “The Sheriff of Baghdad” or “SHREK,” is a retired U.S. Army Special Operations Sergeant Major with over 20 years of distinguished service. A retired DELTA Force Operator, John was responsible for countless solo missions in country across a number of combat theaters all through out the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. After retiring from active duty, John founded the S.O.B. Tactical brand to extend his expertise to civilians, law enforcement, and militaries worldwide.
Talking to John, one thing's for sure - he's not one to apologize about anything. In fact, he's more down to earth than you might expect, and he's more than happy to answer any questions anybody dares to throw at him. So how does a homegrown Chicago man go on to run solo missions of the highest order? How does one develop the skills necessary to pass their skillset onto the next generation? He sounds like those Californians who always come across as laidback , but it turns out they seem that way when they are punching you in the head or relaxing in the sun or whatever. I call it the Californian demeanor. It doesn’t necessarily require you to be from California. I have no idea where this guy hails from.

This has got to be the most interesting interview I have watched Mike conduct, not because the topics are extraordinary, but because getting Shrek to stay on topic and answer the questions is like herding cats. Mike had to have been exhausted at the end.

Judging by the look on his face, I think Mike would start to think about previous life decisions if he ever had to share a hide-site with the Sergeant Major, lol. I enlisted in '96 also and actually 'met' the sergeant back pre-9/11, he had been in a platoon with one of our sergeants previously. And, back then the SEALs had a bad reputation within the Ranger Regiment. The common saying was that an average PIR infantry platoon in the 82nd could out perform a SEAL platoon in Infantry skills.

I don’t think he was just breaking balls when he talked about the SEALS. I think he genuinely feels that way. He goes into his contempt for the SEALS particularly DEVGRU on other podcasts. Well done, Ritland!

@@FJ24. It was a generational thing. John was a GWOT baby, and that generation of CAG and DevGru guys fuckin hated each other. That energy changed as the GWOT hyper intensified and there would be plenty of work for everyone going forward.. The fear for both Units was the GWOT would be over a few years and real world missions would go away and reverse quickly back to a peace time era. Everyone one was fighting for a piece of the “Direct Action” cake, and SEALs don’t do FID 😂
