Hey bookworms! Not sure how many of my viewers were Crichton fans, I know you guys are mostly here for the fantasy talk, but I'm hoping I can convince some of you to pick up some Mr. Crichton books with this video, as he was an author that was very inspiring and influential to me growing up as a teenager in the 1990's.

Finally, someone on KZfaq is giving Michael Crichton the respect he deserves. He was a late-20th Century Jules Verne, with his exciting novels that critiqued the scientific advancements of the era. Also, dinosaurs.

This is a very decent dossier of Crichton; I didn't know he worked on films, and television-especially ER TV show- I also didn't know he was a medical school graduate. I know this is a book review of Crichton, but it's also a prelude to his biography-something I would happily read.

Crichton is my favorite author. He has been since i was ten. He was uncompromising in his methodology, impeccable in his form. His writing, even the dry science, was always comprehensible. And the core of the books, the spirit behind them, was always important. Appreciation for the natural world, respect for the power that scientific discovery gives us, the flawed perspectives of man. I would love to review every novel he wrote some day.

Man, Michael Crichton was the first author to get a "favorite writer" moniker from me. I was in high school at the late 90s/early 00s and was devouring the sci-fi sections in my local libraries when I stumbled upon either "Andromeda Strain" or "Sphere" - whichever one was first it impressed me so much I promptly went through his whole available body of work, even though at the time the only books i was interested in were science fiction novels - I read The Great Train Robbery, Disclosure, everything, and loved every single one, with the possible exception of Eaters of the dead/13th warrior. Looking at the complete list of his books I noticed that Disclosure was the last one of his I read... well. I have some accrued credits in Audible, guess who's about to get herself some nostalgia, possibly followed by some never before read books... Thanks for reminding me about an author I used to love and sadly, forgot about.

I remember searching the small bookstore by me one summer day for something good to read and pulling stuff off the shelf repeatedly and not finding anything of interest. Eventually, I came across this book with a t-rex skeleton on the cover by this guy I never heard of... flipped the book over, read the synopsis, and said sold. I devoured that book in a day. Obviously, the book was Jurassic Park. I have since read almost everything of his including the books he wrote under the name John Lange. I am so grateful to have experienced Jurassic Park before it became famous. When I found out about his passing away I got chocked up because I also didn't realize that he was fighting cancer. It felt like losing a friend even though I never knew him in person. Great author and a great video. Thanks!

Glad I found this video and your channel. Well, I've read everything Michael Crichton wrote, with the exception of Dragon Teeth. Until 2013 I've read 19/34 of his books. But in November 2018 as a way to commemorate 10 years since his death I decided to do a Michael Crichton project and read everything by him in chronological order, one book per month. All his novels including his 8 John Lange thrillers plus his 4 non fiction ones. In August 2021 this project will be completed with Dragon Teeth. So in other words I'm a Michael Crichton fan and I'm glad I found this channel through this video!

@@mikesbookreviews Amen to that. Tolkien managed to build a complete fantasy world (complete with languages!) and tell the most epic fantasy story of all time with only five books. Now everyone seems to feel they need ten or more door-stoppers. Even Malazan (which I am a huge fan of) could have done with a bit of editing.

Great video, Mike! I'd love to see more Crichton on your channel! He was, in my opinion, wrong on some issues (like climate change), but that shouldn't stop anyone from reading his books. Crichton was a brilliant storyteller and I love the diversity of his works. I don't need to agree with an author on every issue in order to enjoy their stories. Otherwise there'd be hardly anything to read. Arthur Conan Doyle, for example, is one of my favorite authors ever - and the man seriously believed in the existence of fairies! :D

So I love sci-fi, whether it be Star Wars, Star Trek, Ender's Game, Timeline, and many more, I enjoy the stories and the technologies represented in them. Please give Micro a read because it is worth it. I will say there are parts that you can tell weren't plot ideas from Crichton but they only slightly diminish the over all story. What I mainly love about Crichton's techo-thrillers is the technologies and how they are explained and explored enough for the story. My Crichton list would have to be favorite to least favorite: Timeline, Prey, Jurassic Park, Micro, Andromeda Strain, Sphere, State of Fear, Lost World, Congo, Terminal Man, Next.

Crichton is right up there with King as my favorite authors. I always liked how even though most of his stories were science fiction-based, he still used a lot of objectivity in his material which was really cool. He always gave a scientific-type approach that made the impossible seem very much possible.

I’m a little late to the comments, but are you going to cover the books Crichton wrote under the pseudonyms John Lange and Jeffrey Hudson? The Lange books are interesting time capsules and "A Case of Need" under the Jeffrey Hudson name is actually quite good. These books a cool glimpse into Crichton's growth as a writer. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Back in the day, the Lange books were very hard to find, but with Amazon, they are readily available.

Recently read TIMELINE. I was skeptical going in, and I didn’t understand a lot of the physics explanations. I’d be interested in a longer discussion about this one. I thought it was great.

I think Jurassic Park is nearly A perfect book. he first gives you small hints of what you kind of think is going on. Then he takes your thoughts and makes it reality then he takes your reality and his rules he set and puts them on its head, and you can't let go. I just love his writing style so much it's so different then a lot of the books I've read. Also, I Love ER sad he couldn't write more books before he died fantastic Author and one of my favorites of all time.

Love Crichton, but you should definitely read Clancy. Some of its now 40 year old historical fiction, but its the father of an entire genre of techno-military-intelligence thriller. If you've read Larry Bond work, its the better version of that.

I have read many of his books and enjoyed most of them. I remember renting The 13th Warrior when it first came out and loved it and noticed he wrote it. I quickly ordered The Eaters of the Dead but I found it a little disappointing with the cliff notes. I realize it was a take on Beowulf but it fell short for me.

EotD was a different approach for him. Made me think of the way Bram Stoker's Dracula was written. I can certainly see how it didn't click for everyone. I took it as multiple unreliable narrators through the ages and how a story becomes myth after being handed down for generations.

Like you, Crichton was the author of my teens. However I stopped reading his works. At this time I currently have read half of his works. I’m now reading his remaining works and it’s great. Takes me back to my younger days. Thanks for the video. My top five: Jurassic Park, The Great Train Robbery, Eaters of the Dead, Congo and Sphere.

Read Jurassic Park and was hooked. Im the biggest JP fan. I could go on about Mr.Crichton forever, but you pretty much addressed everything. Have you read Preston and Child? They had a movie out called The Relic. It is a first story on an Agent Pendergast series. Im on the 3rd book which are set on a gothic natural history museum backdrop. Also a series known as the Gideon Crew series they are 5 book techno adventure series. A defiant recommendation of book.

Crichton is such an important writer for me He's the one responsible for the eventual creation of my favorite movie, Jurassic Park, which then lead me to discovering that it was based on a novel And that was the first novel I'd ever read, at the simple age of 8 Did I understand any of the concepts? Mostly not But the book certainly scared the living shit out of me, I wasn't expecting it to be such a gore-fest

I wanna go back to Crichton’ s thoughts/excerpts of his thoughts about extinction there 33:44 especially for THE guy who wrote the definitive sci-fi book on dinosaurs. Their extinction was most certainly an environmental event that was not of their making as a species. It’s humans that keep flouting the natural order of things and being the exception to the rule that breaks things as humankind thinking itself to be exceptional rather than seeking harmony with the natural world and itself. In fact, I would argue that as much as the earth will “survive” humans, what does that even mean? Survive as a planet orbiting the sun but no longer hospitable to life or able to support life like the atmosphere that was depleted on Mars? I’m sure Crichton expounds. His observation however on not having knowledge and on not thinking is all too prescient.

Tom Clancy wrote Jack Ryan; John Grisham was the Lawyer books... Crichton is what got me into reading, but you should read Micro, it has a little of Prey book and sorta like Innerspace movie with David Quaid, I thought was a great book; but could be like the book next and having a lot of his ideas etc already done
