Easy Macbook Pro 2014 Battery Swap with Kite String

MBP battery swaps are officially called "difficult" because most processes require you to remove every internal component in order to dissolve the adhesive used on the battery without damaging other electronics. But with some kite string and fingernail polish you can sidestep the challenging disassembly and replace your depleted battery with a fresh one in minutes.

Best video on this out there so far! I'm about to attempt mine. Thanks for sharing your technique.

i use this method on every macbook battery, kite string is good, but its a little thick, i use braided fishing line. its very strong and thinner cuts through the adhesive easier.

How does the braid handle that friction? Wouldn't some 0,3-0,5 leader be better for this?

Great video! I’m really experienced at electronics repairs, but even I was intimidated by the iFixit method. 😳 This is so much better. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻 One more tip for folks: When spraying inside of fans with compressed air, stick a toothpick or pencil or something between the fan blades to keep them from spinning when you blow air into them. Sometimes forcing them to spin with air can damage the fans. 👍🏻

Mike!! You rule man!! I had ordered a battery off Amazon and watched the OWC video to see if I felt comfortable pulling this off. When I saw that they put everything back in and THEN installed the battery, it started to feel like all that extra work was kind of superfluous. Found your video next and less than an hour later my trusty mid-2014 Macbook was back up and running. Even better is that my trackpad works again after getting that terribly swollen battery out. I ended up using dental floss cause that's what was handy. It only broke once. 😁 Definitely just have to be patient working that adhesive away but this seriously works like a charm. Thanks so much man. Hope this helps a lot of other folks tackle this repair too.

Many thanks! I used a braided nylon cord used for stringing beads. It cut the glue with no solvent softening. I found that the solvent in UK "Brasso" metal polish helped move the pads that remained. I saw no need for the new glue pads - easier if I need to do it again.

i would not even bother glueing it back down, it's not going anywhere.

You saved me what's left of my hairline. I bought the iFixit kit and while I'm sure their way is "proper" it would have taken me half an effin day! Their instructions basically have you disassemble the entire computer! This is WAAAAAAAAAAY easier, I was done in like 10 mins from start to finish. The only thing I did differently was soak the string in the adhesive remover (from iFixit but it's probably basically the same stuff) and it was like slicing through butter.

I love iFixit. But I don't like how they want you to build an entire computer from scratch just to change the battery. Glad this was helpful for you and I dig the string-soaking tip!

@@MikeSenese Yeah their reason for the over-complicated and "proper" way to do it is to limit possible damage from the adhesive remover solution, but I'd be willing to bet that going with their method of replacing the battery you're more likely to damage something else because you literally have to basically disassemble the entire thing! Anyway, thanks again! She feels so fresh and clean now!

Thanks for showing both the removal and installation of the new battery. I also have a mid-2014 MBP and am about to replace battery and swap in a 2TB NVMe as well.

Hi Mike, Thanks for sharing your battery replacement method. I just followed it, though I also completely read iFixIT's, and all went well up to now. Just need to wait for the new battery to fully charge + the 2 hour charging recommended, and then will get a brand new Mac :-) I presume that when being very careful and meticulous, the operation should runn fine. Will confirm in a couple of hours though!

No need to disassemble anything, just loosen the speaker screws so you can partly lift them up and slide a long blade palette knife under the old battery to cut the adhesive. Mine is a mid 2012 A1398 and it was really crusty adhesive. Cleaning off the residue is a pain, and I scuffed the base of the touchpad a bit.....hope it still works, as the supplier sent me the wrong battery so I couldn't test.!

I have this job on my 2015 coming up, but I'd probably figure out a way to maybe use only a few of those glue strips and not all of them to make it easier for next time.

I am having trouble with the touch pad but probably ne’er to remove battery to get to that. Swollen battery may be causing the pad problem. I guess I’ll be ready to replace both.

What if you place battery without taping it? Because it's a pain to remove again

Glad I found this video. So much better than showing a metal knife behind the battery. One question though. The acetone might damage the speakers on the edges I am thinking. Is the acetone even necessary?

some people suggested dipping the string, or some people seem to be using braided fishing line in acetone...this would result in less acetone being applied seems like....unsure gonna find out soon enough

Excellent video man. Hope you're still looking at some comments. I just need to know what brand and model of battery you've used, there are way too many brands out there on the compatible type. Thanks a lot.

I did a similar thing to get a Sirius xm thing off the dash of a used car I bought. Only difference was I used 10 lb fishing line, and goof off.

Great video and appreciate your honesty and not editing it to pieces…so what was the total time would you say start to finish?

Thanks! It took maybe 40 minutes total, and that includes talking through it out loud to the camera. The slowest part is probably removing/replacing all the screws on the bottom cover.

I have two questions, the MacBook I'm looking to do this with has a swollen battery I'm just wondering if that makes it more risky and second question is why not just leave out re attaching the adhesive it doesn't seem to have an important function other than to make replacement more difficult there isn't alot of room for it to move to begin with.
@phillipcastillo8519
@phillipcastillo8519 Жыл бұрын
Being swollen does add a bit more danger to it but it also helps the adhesive to separate since it’s blown up also you don’t have to reapply the adhesive on the new battery either it really doesn’t move when put back together

Do Apple stick the batteries down merely to discourage replacing them? This method makes so much more sense and I wouldn’t be surprised if Mac repair shops do exactly the same thing, tho keep quiet about it. After all, given the quotes I’ve been given, it would be a nice little earner for just 40 minutes work. Would it be an idea 1) to allow the acetone a little mor time to dissolve the adhesive? And 2) to use the acetone on a swab to soften the remnants of the adhesive when cleaning the space for the new battery?
