I can't recall if I was ever taught that in boot camp or not. But, ever since my time in and for me, that was late 80s, I have been able to fall asleep anytime, anywhere under damn near any conditions within minutes if not seconds. More than anything, it's a willing state of zen where you will those precious few moments away in utter unconscious bliss and the longer it lasts, the better it is.

It used to take somewhere between 20 minutes to 2 hours for me to fall asleep. Then I bought blue light glasses and holy shit did that change everything! Now I fall asleep within 5 minutes. Just to be on the safe side, I've also switched to decaf coffee after lunch. And here's a tip; something I used to do when I had trouble falling asleep, was lay down in a comfortable position and then count backward from 100 very slowly in my head while also breathing slowly. If I lost track of my counting, I'd just pick up where I thought I left off (losing track often meant I was about to nod off).

I've been using something very similar to the military method for about 7 years now, but I had no idea it had a name. I coupled it with a meditation type technique, where I lie in bed in a comfortable position, then focus my mind on my feet. Then without moving them, I imagine them falling asleep. Then I move on to the legs, and imagine them falling asleep, and so on up my body until I eventually reach my head, at which point I'm so relaxed I just fall asleep almost instantly.

this is a well known method called “progressive relaxation”. For a lot of people, like you, it just comes naturally. Self soothing is something we all do whether we become consciously aware of it or not. Doing what you described is a really good way to relax, not just for sleep, but for any activity that could benefit from one not being so consciously aware of one’s body, such as studying/reading, paying attention to a speech/lecture, watching a movie, and so on.

Something that I've realized that helps a lot when trying to sleep and having too much mental energy is to concentrate that mental energy into visualizing. Try to imagine yourself in your own head in an environment, for example imagine your room through your closed eyelids and imagine yourself getting out of bed and doing stuff. Any engaging situation that takes effort to imagine will both tire you and also put the energy used on overthinking into something else that won't interrupt your goal of sleep.

Everyone knows you shouldn't drink caffeine after like 3pm, you shouldn't use your bed for entertainment, you shouldn't eat for a few hours before bed, you shouldn't stay in bed if you can't sleep, etc., but one of the best tips I ever received about how to fall asleep sounds crazy, but it's actually brilliant. [I wouldn't bother with this tip, however, if you're prone to sleep paralysis and don't enjoy it because this tip, while helpful for transitioning to sleep, can result in sleep paralysis. If you don't get sleep paralysis or if you're like me and able to stay calm and find it interesting, maybe give it a try.] It's simple: ignore itches (and don't toss and turn.) That's it. Sort of. You have to be militant about your adherence to that rule though, for it to work. There's good science behind it too. Sleep is FAR from the "passive" sort of "shutdown" we're taught to think of it as. Sleep is a very active process for the brain. "Sleep" means two different things to you and your brain. When you fall asleep and become unconscious your brain goes through a transition, like a handoff of responsibilities from "awake brain processes" to "sleep brain processes." It doesn't want to do this until you're definitely unconscious though, because that would be detrimental to any organism focused on survival. (Imagine becoming physucally paralyzed while in the middle of a fight because your brain decides it's tired.) So before your brain makes this handoff it tests your body to see if you're ready for sleep or if you're still conscious. One of the ways your brain tests your body is by creating itches. If you scratch the itch then your brain knows you're awake and it's not time to start all the processes it does during sleep. If you are unconscious and ready for the sleep processes to behin then you won't scratch, and your brain knows it can get to work. So when you lay down to go to sleep, get comfortable, close your eyes, and be still. Truly still. Don't toss and turn no matter how tempting, and ignore the urge to scratch all the little itches you get. It's not easy to ignore them, and they can get very intense sometimes, but just remember that if you don't itch them it'll help you get to sleep.
@Yarblocosifilitico3 жыл бұрын
interesting thanks. I think I was told the same tip, but in a different way: you lay down in your prefered posture and then start imagining that your body is becoming stone, from the toes to the head. So I guess the principle is the same, to stay still no matter what. Also, imaging your body as stone might emulate the feeling of heaviness when you're exhausted.

Instead of thinking of not thinking, I find the best thing to do is think of things you like so even if you can’t fall asleep, you won’t be stressed out and be in a good state of mind.

My mind is like a Pokémon Randomizer game with Mortal Kombat mods. If I think about what I like I won't be able to sleep but rather jump out of my bed and jump around. And I am sure that not much will change when I will grow up

How to fall asleep fast: 1. Write down every thought you have before you go to bed,try to sleep and if something else comes out write that down again until you covered everything 2. Don't blame yourself for not falling asleep or for having thoughts, instead convince yourself it's ok

I have 2 methods and I pretty much always fall asleep quickly. I use the "imaging all your muscles shutting down and relaxing" and one I came up with on my own (I'm probably not the first person to do this) but what I do is if I'm in a dark room, I slightly open my eyes to the point where they feel droopy but are not closed, and I slowly try to relax my eyelids and gently push them towards each other until they close on their own. It makes my eyelids much more relaxed and sleepy and it always helps me
