Man, 12" inch single versions of songs really allowed the artist to create such a much more indepth piece of work. Radio versions often scrapped important parts and just gave us the meat and potatoes of the song.

The song and this mix in particular speak to my soul. The break at 3:18 spotlighting the mandolin accompanied by the cello leaves me breathless and by the time the drums arrive at 3:55 with the entire orchestra ... let’s just say it’s an emotional experience. Thank you Ian, thank you God.

We’re not far from 40 years since this release. The poster of this EP hung over the turntable in the record store where I worked. I sometimes retreat to vinyl and the All Night Version when the atheism of my existence finds me needing some religion. Few in my small town, middle America, understood how magnificent this really was. They just couldn’t get REO Speedwagon out of the high school tape deck in their minds. The gift, these decades later, is that it still stands, out of time like the Pieta, or the Mona Lisa. It will, fate willing, endure even as those of us who remember the world before it fade into the blackness.

I can only imagine myself and my love lying on the boat. Our eyes glued to the great celestial bodies in the infinitely dark sky. Don't take this as a diss, because I am huge fan of "death of the author", the beautiful ability for art to be this flexible, liquid thing that changes in the hands of those who experience it, but...that seems like a wonderfully optimistic vision for a song dripping with fatalist imagery called "The Killing Moon"....

Adam Peters played the strings on cello. The pizzicato sound is a bit of a mystery, as the register is too high for that instrument. But apparently the producer used a synth for the other string parts. Maybe an E-mu Emulator?
