We all hate the new design of the AM5 processors, so many areas that thermal paste or compound can get stuck and then potentially get down into the socket! What a nightmare!
These silicone CPU gaskets are a great idea! You don't have the scary task of removing the AM5 retention mechanism and replacing it with a CPU bracket and trying to get the torque on the screws just right.
A easy to install silicon guard works as well if not better and needs almost zero technical ability other than to match up the triangles.
These are also washable in hot water and detergent for a nice clean install time after time.
Brilliant value as well, a twin pack for less than a tenner!

You don't need those stupid gaskets, you could submerge the entire cpu in thermal paste and its going to run just fine. Thermal paste is non-conductive. Plus those SMDs are not that important anyways, I knocked a few when delidding and cpu was working as intended.

Another alternative is to use a kryosheet instead. The advantage is that you don't need either thermal paste or thermal guard. Yes, the kryosheet in more expensive than thermal paste, but if you factor in the addition of the thermal guard it becomes more or less the same cost.
@michaeldejode473
@michaeldejode473 7 ай бұрын
You do have to be careful because the kryosheets are electrically conductive, and since they are quite brittle you might want to take steps to protect your hardware. These silicon paste guards might also be good to use in that case.

@@mikesunboxing I stopped by my Microcenter where i picked it up. They said it sounds like the Mobo. They said if it was the cpu, the cpu wouldn't work period, and nothing would boot. It wouldn't sometimes work and sometimes not work. It just wouldn't work. The gpu works fine in my old computer, and I don't get any artifacts or lines going across. I would be more interested in this for delidding, since companies seem to want to ruin everything by putting wavy, thick, improperly internal contact, lids on their processors. Just removing the lid drops 13-14c on air cooling. But as risky as it is, I would be happier doing it with something like this to guard against chip damage once the lid is off.

Big mistake here is applying the paste to the processor. Apply a tiny amount to the heat sink instead then spread and wipe off the excess. like applying wood glue and clamping you will be surprised how much then squeezes out. these ultra expensive things are only relevant when a lot too much paste is initially applied to the CPU

@nathangamble125 7 ай бұрын
The design helps with rigidity, similar how corrugations in metal and cardboard increase rigidity. AMD wanted to avoid the problems that Intel has with LGA1700 CPUs, which are often bent slightly by the ILM putting pressure on only two edges of the CPU rather than all four. This can cause overheating by preventing the CPU cooler making proper contact. So with Intel you have a problem that can be fixed by a replacing the ILM with a contact frame; with AMD you have a problem that can be fixed by adding a silicone guard.

@nathangamble125
@nathangamble125 7 ай бұрын
It's not so much about danger as making the cleanup a bit easier when changing your CPU, cooler, or thermal paste. The paste Mike uses in the video contains silver, so it is slightly electrically conductive. The risk is very low, but it could potentially interfere with the performance of the capacitors on the edges of the CPU substrate (it's probably not conductive enough to be a short-circuit risk, but the capacitance and inductance of the silver particles in the paste could have a small effect). And like Mike says, there is also a small risk of paste getting into the socket.

@@mikesunboxing Nope. That's the point! You only need a minuscule amount, like half a black pepper seed, and spread it with the tip of your finger. The purpose of the thermal paste is to fill microscopic gaps between the IHS and the cooler. It's not machine-grease to go everywhere. If it spills over the edge of the IHS, you're using too much. Simple as that. This is how I do it, minus the scotch tape: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rsBihZej1KyVj4U.htmlsi=IazFxV_QzkWj5YWX&t=303
@mikesunboxing
@mikesunboxing 7 ай бұрын
hundreds of videos have disproved that, you need a full coverage thin film across the entire IHS, the modern heatsinks and even the IHS are not very well made and have quite large deviations from being flat. Ultimately if your method works for you great, carry on and you do what you like. You can't come in to a video comment with a statement like "as an am5 owner" how does that make you an authority on anything? It is just your opinion, which you are welcome to. but to say you absolutely don't need this, is forcing your opinion on people. Some might need it for there thermal paste anxiety, who are you to tell them they don't need it? There are lots of people in this word with different needs, maybe consider others before you make a blanket statement?
