11:10 That's definitely a mold. I'm not sure exactly what kind, but it will undoubtedly spread via isopod/springtail or just air currents. The white caps you're seeing are most likely the spore-producing parts. The colonies of mold are very mature and are rapidly spreading. I'd get rid of it ASAP if you don't want it all over your home.

Thanks! You are correct with the assessment of it being a mold!

Thanks for showing your cultures! I would love to see a video or post about the food you prepare for your springtails. :) I had similar problems with mold before, I figured the spores came with thesubstrate somehow, so I cleaned the whole enclosure because the mold just wouldn't go away. I'm not sure it was causing any problems for my animals, I was just afraid it will eventually spread so I decided to clean the cultures as a preventive measure. Hope your mold just disappears so you don't need to do this. :D

Hi Mike, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I got a baby Crested and 5 Ghost Mantis nymphs for Christmas. Rango (My veiled chameleon) got a new stick and a new vine. I am trying to culture some springtails on clay balls (LECA). So far they seem to be thriving, but I only started it a couple weeks ago. I sprinkle some Repashy and Pangea crested gecko food into my springtail enclosures and they seem to love it. I also throw them a little chunk of mushroom once in a while. On a side note, I stopped by Predators Reptile store in Mesa yesterday. I live in the valley and it is the first time I have been there. I had to go after I saw your video tour of the store. Definitely a fun store. I am setting up a new vivarium so that I can pick up a couple of the terribilis that they have. Keep the videos coming. Dan

That is awesome that you are here. If you stop by Predators check out the Extatosoma tiaratum (giant prickly stick insect) that they have in the deli cups up by the registers. I am contemplating get one of them but supposedly they can get up to a foot long. I though about grabbing one of those also but I am not sure were I would keep an insect that can get bigger than a chameleon. Lol Happy New Year to you and your family! Dan

Whats the scientific name for those grey springtails? Also your zebra isopods (Armadillidum maculatum) should not be kept moist, they are unlike most isopods and prefer to be a lot drier than the average. Hence why they are perfect CUC for more arid enclosures.

gringredients? :P It amazed me how easy it was to grow up our local isopods... too bad it didn't lead to me making money :( Take a chunk of that mold stuff into your biology place at school and have them look at it under a microscope and figure out what it is, or ask a local person that'd know (like a local mold removal professional). I tried looking it up online and there's too many species of molds and fungi to be able to narrow it down... I even tried looking for Calgary specific strains. ...all I got was house mold and toenail mold.

100% yes. Then you don't have to stress the animal by going in to clean the enclosure. Chameleons can become quite stressed anyways so its best to keep the risk to a minimum.

one would eventualy out compete the other in the long run. Although if you mixed say the dwarf whites with the zebra isopods that might work since they stay at different levels in the substrate.

Hi, i noticed some mites in one of my isopod cultures, only one culture and not piles of mites so they should defeat them, i removed the old food so that shoukd also help. I plugged all air holes to stop them from getting in and out. I will just open the container once a day. Im going to get dietomaceous earth so i dont have any problems again. Do i get the food grade stuff? Or is that different? And how many pound bag would i need for 2 or 3 standard plant trays? Im thinking of using the trays with a dome on top to stop them from dropping from above. Thanks so much
@MikeTytula

Hey Mike! I had 2 dwarf white isopod cultures going from my original cuc to seed a new tank. Both of them ended up with these teeny white worms in them that killed them all off. I have a purple colony going now and I have spotted a few of those damn worms. Any clue what the hell they are, where they are coming from and how to prevent them? I don’t want to lose another culture! Also where did you get your diatomaceous earth in Calgary? Thanks!
