I started this method because of your encouraging enthusiasm last winter in the basement. I had green beans and peas and Asian greens. I also had fungus gnats. I put out traps that worked well. I need to make my setup more aesthetically pleasing. I had to put dust covers over my grow area, because the cat litter boxes are also downstairs and cat litter dust can be spread far and wide. I would rather not eat cat litter dust. Yuck!! .

I am slowly moving away from hydroponics, going back to soil, just as a personal preference, but when I mix my nutrient solutions, I use about six cups of hot water and dissolve everything in that first then pour that into the 5 gallons of water and it does way easier, faster and I know it's mixed 100%.

I saw an idea awhile back to go to Dollar Tree, in the party supplies section they sell table cloths that are similar to mylar, I found them and they work fabulous for mason jars. They come in silver and just saw a shiny purple one. They are way cheaper than foil or an emergency blanket. Plus they are huge, plenty to do more than a dozen jars even doubled up. Rubber band around the neck keeps it in place! 🌱

I got my planter from you. And have been successful growing romaine lettuce. I'm literally live in less than a 1000 ft² really cool condo. I don't have a place to hold 5 gallons of anything. So what I do is I divided up your nutrient by 5 and put it into a one gallon container. I've been getting some Brown spots, but I've just figured out from this video it's because I let the nutrition get too low. I don't have any good sunlight from my my patio. My patio is 8" on the 3rd floor. So I'm pretty limited to growing in these containers or larger containers. I'm excited to start tomatoes in large containers. I really want to thank you for all that you do as I am the last person That whatever consider growing anything. Usually, I've killed every single plant I've had. But I've been successful in the successful in this and my friends are truly amazed and I've encouraged them to start growing. Thank you Mike!

I still use the traditional buckets to grow my tomatoes, cucumber in a trellis type system because I don't have a garden area because of being in a restricted living space. Firstly, thank you for that ratio rule. I'm big into canning as we are limited with the growing season outdoors in Canada (zone 3), I have plenty of mason jars (over 1500) with at least a few hundred spare as we use and re-use, i'll be putting some aside now based on this Kratky growing method. Lots of great tips about covering the glass jar too, but I especially love your pool noodle hack. This growing season once I get this system set up, I will expand that to my kids homeschool science too as an alternative to traditional soil methods (which is what we did last season). Thank you for all the knowledge you have shared on your channel - I'm new to this growing method. Very inspiring.

Great video, Mike. Funny enough, I had a Thai basil plant in a little aerogarden that I keep in the kitchen that was gifted to me. It was overrunning the thing for a while, but I did something wrong and it appeared to get root rot, but I was not entirely sure. I moved it to a single mason jar to separate it from everything and try some recovery with it. Thing is still in my kitchen window with great roots and looks like a small tree above the sink. Haha. I love playing around with some of these things.

Mike, please verify if this is true. Masterblend and magnesium sulphate must be completely dissolved prior to adding calcium nitrate to prevent nutrient lockout. Someone in the comments was talking about mixing everything together at one time, in a liitle bit of water and then adding the rest of the water, which may not work. Also seedlings need mixture diluted by half. Also, please verify because I just heard this from someone else. Thanks!
@KeepOnGrowin

This is a great video for beginners to watch. I'm trying to start my own system, I started germinating my seeds but I haven't decided exactly what method I'm gonna try. I've drawn up a couple concept drawing of how I want to set up. My space is very limited indoors so I wanted to do a tower set up... I might start with basic Kratky method like you say though to just grow stuff and then try different methods as I gain experience. For now I'm putting together a small tower aero/hydro design with PVC to test it out. But love the video, you aren't out to sell something unobtainable to people and you stress to stick with beginner steps in order to be successful and learn. It's easy to get caught up watching people build these extravagant setups and be like " omg! First build I grew 30 tomatoes plants in my tower!!@"

I currently only using the Lucas formulae. He worked out a way to use only what the plants need. It relates to a few brands out there. for example, i just use flower feed of GHE Novamax from start to finish, at the correct ratio it provides everything they require. GHE also have a 3 part feed, using Lucas you are use 2 of them. Right, i gotta get me some guttering!!

I was wondering if you would share some specifics about how you bend up the ends of the downspout to eliminate the need for an endcap? Do you use a heat gun? or a blow dryer?

Hi Mike, thank for the inspiration, I'm going to start small today. Here's one question... If I go with a downspout method, do all the plants in one downspout have to be the same? Eventually, I'd like to have 4 or 5 downspouts, at different growing stages of different plants so that I always have what I need of everything. I'm going to write this question on your FB page too, in hopes to get an answer.. I know you are busy.

Hey there, yes, try to keep them the same. Different plants use nutrients at different rates. After you get the hang of it, you can experiemnt.

Hey Mike! I haven't looked at all your vids, but want to know if you did or can do a vertical hydroponic grow method in a grow tent? I have a 30" x 39" with 2 lights and growing with soil but want to put a vertical planter right in the middle

Should work as long as you have enough light and some ventilation.

If you're growing outside, how do you keep rain water out. Won't it dilute the solution?

Hi Mike, just found your channel & love it. I have been wanting to do hydroponics for awhile but it needs to be in my entryway. How to make something stylish? Swanky? Fancy? Only way my family will say yes. Help!

What about the rack that your gallon jugs are hanging on? Can you show details on that? Or do you already have that somewhere?

How do you grow vegetables with this system that mature under the ground. Those like carrots and potatoes, etc.?

Is this really organic? I see powdered put into water to that when it was processed to make npk powederd? I like to avoid growing something that could make a basil plant not be good for consumption being in hydroponic yet it looks amazing but dunno since i dont understand it too well. I already put my unhappy basils that did grow before having issues wirh my aoil mix into water and rooted and grew so much much better but now its losing its colors. However, seeing it grow like that really made me curious. Hope you can shed some light on it.
