I started donating to the Salvation Army instead. They take everyone's donations for their charitable program & sell it all at approximately 429 ARC-affiliated family & thrift stores. The proceeds from those sales fund the ARC rehabilitation program, which is generally provided to participants without charge. One commenter said yesterday that when she & her 3 children were enduring a hardship including homelessness years ago, she was given vouchers to get 3 outfits & a pair of shoes for each of them to spend at Goodwill. She spent a long time helping each child pick out something that made them feel good, but when she got to the counter the clerk said "none of that is included for vouchers. Only specially marked items are." That story really bothered me & just goes to show what their company's core values consist of.

@@annaculver1304 yep! I HAD to thrift shop for my baby and myself after I escaped fr an abusive husband and had to unscramble my head, get back on my feet, recover my beaten-down mind. I was thankfully approved for welfare and baby formula/food coupons but we still needed clothes and other things. I could get t-shirts and jeans all day long for .75 cents and $2.50. Now, that t-shirt in same condition sells for $7 and the jeans $12. I see Tees and jeans for far more than that, too. Now, decades later, Goodwills and other chain thrift stores are pseudo-boutiques judging by the outlandish prices. They've forgotten about the needy people and are pricing for the reseller's market. In a way, yes, the resellers have ruined it. Sure, people resold decades ago. But they weren't all making videos while trhifting, selling on ebay & PoshM, and didn't have a smartphone to search comparables! What can I say? GREED has destroyed the Capitalist-run countries. And those not run on a cap'st economy are STILL being destroyed by greed.

You not only get FREE donations, they are listed on the form as gifts. Being a nice little helpful shop the local taxman ignores the fact you collect nil sales tax. That is a nice 5% bump to your BL. They took out all of the dressing rooms across the country during Covid. They just said 'Nope we aren't bringing them back', and so it has been....sigh😢 But now the return policy is 60 days for everything with the price tag still attached and receipt. Even clothing and working items. Oh, but you don't get the original payment back. You get store credit that must be used at the time of return. Oh, and if you dont use this full amount, you lose it. Let's say you bought a $40 item, you return it, and you get $40 store credit to use that day. You find some other items, but it only totals $30. You lose the other $10.

So.... you don't mind the CEO's making obscene salaries off donated items... but you begrudge an average person trying to earn a (usually meager & supplemental) living by providing a service to others? And why would PEOPLE BUYING THEIR STUFF make thrift shops raise prices? That doesn't even make sense. And, for the record, the original point of GW and most other "charity" shops is NOT that the items are cheap so that poor people can buy them - it's to raise money to help their chosen charity. Stop blaming other poor people for doing what they gotta do to get by. Get mad at the rich who keep squeezing everyone so that they CAN'T get by.

@@ktinx225 Resellers aren’t why the prices went up. That makes no sense. People have been reselling thrifted finds since thrift stores came to be. Before the internet it was harder to resell. people with shops could resell their finds. There were also shops where you could rent a space and sell your finds. They upped the prices because their profit margin isn’t high enough for them. Corporate greed. Somebody up top said they need a certain profit margin. That person makes a ton of money running the company. They have no idea what you are going to do with the items you buy there unless they are somehow tracking your every move 😳😵‍💫 I don’t think Goodwill has the money to invest in that technology to track all their customers. 😂

Goodwill shoppers are mostly normal buyers and not resellers. Why on earth would Goodwill feel that it's a good idea to increase prices just to combat the 15 or 20 resellers they may get each day over the hundreds of non resellers? I can tell the resellers in a Goodwill verses a regular customer that's just looking to purchase something for themselves. The average ratio is about 30 to 1. Their goal should be to offer great prices to all, regarless if a reseller comes in and snags a deal to resell for a higher price. Their goal should be to make a sale to help their cause, or to give back the "their charity" which is questionable. Keep in mind that up until recently, they were getting 100% profit because everything in their store was donated. Have you noticed that they've started selling brand new items now? I see new stuff all over the store now like brand new rugs, new socks, new bras, new belts, new reading glasses, new crappy cheap jewelry, new Hanes T-shirts, kitchen items, fake nails and eyelashes, paint supplies, candy, chips/snacks, and even brand new clothing!!!! Maybe since they're not 100% donations and now have new merchandised inventory, they have to increase prices because those new items aren't donated. My local Goodwill, in a small rural community of about 20,000 people has slowly started introducing "brand new' items over the last year and now it's starting to look like the Dollar Tree inside. In any given Goodwill, there may be a small handfull of items and clothing that would actually sell for a higher profit on Ebay or Poshmark. I spent 4 years as a reseller on Ebay and Poshmark and I had to spend hours in each Goodwill just to find a few items of value. Honestly, not worth it for the time I spent shopping for this stuff, not to mention measuring, putting together a good description, photographing, and listing item and once sold, packaging and making trips to USPS to ship the items. If they put all the resellers out of business or even half, will they decrease their prices??? I highly doubt it. So are they really increasing prices because of the resellers or are they using resellers as an excuse to increase their prices? They shouldn't even worry about that anyways because their business is about selling super affordable merchandise to the public (including resellers) and to give back to their local community assisting mainly their employees with job training skills. That's it. If someone in their local community needed help paying for their cancer treatments, Goodwill would not help them. If someone lost their home due to a fire, Goodwill would not help them get back on their feet. Goodwill uses their funds to basically hire more people and pay their salaries which is not much and they appear to be opening more stores in the region, sooooo.......that's where the money goes and don't forget the 6 and even 7 figure incomes that go to the big bosses of the company. If I had a thrift shop of my own, my prices would be lower than theirs. I would sell more items and I wouldn't give two shits if a reseller came into my shop and got a great deal and resold it for a higher price. Good for them. We all can make money and that's good for everyone. That buyer would likely shop from me more and more. I would be gratefule for the free donations and would feel great that I could not only offer my shoppers great deals for return business and also use much of the profits to "truely" help my community that's in need of help. The more I sell, the more money that is made. Take out the dressing rooms, offer a crappy exchange policy making customers come back within a short time frame to exchage an item they may not be able to fit into again or may not find, charge double or more for items, and ask for additional round up money with each purchase is the start of the end of a business. People just want great prices in this crazy economy and raising prices on free, donated items is absolutely insane. I doubt the original founders would agree with the current millionairs that are running it now.

I think it’s funny how people blame resellers for higher prices at goodwill, when in reality it’s corporate greed that makes goodwill raise its prices to astronomical rates for items they receive for free! If anything goodwill should be happy when resellers shop in there stores, because the average person will usually buy a couple of items but resellers usually buy in bulk if the prices are affordable. Plus all the time and effort that resellers have to put in cleaning, fixing, and getting an item to be in a condition worth selling can be more than it’s worth sometimes, only to make a few extra dollars from it. Goodwill just doesn’t like competition and the little guy making money from their free merchandise. Also goodwill items are probably the most taxed items around, the original owner paid tax on it , then the resellers pay tax on it when purchased from goodwill and then the buyer pays tax on it when they purchase it from the resellers! Most people are unaware that goodwill in many cases doesn’t pay tax themselves for these items and also doesn’t pay their employees with disabilities much either. Goodwill pays most disabled employees way below minimum wage but its CEOs make $300,000-900,000 a year! Come on people stop blaming resellers for high prices because it’s good old Uncle Sam and his corporate buddies that are to blame for the ever increasing and inflated costs everywhere these days! Love the channel and the content Mikey always enjoy watching you thrift and your bright spirit makes me smile and usually have a couple laughs! Best wishes and happy thrifting

I am not messing with tags. I am open about the lack of tags, where I found the items etc... half the time cashiers will price it in the moment. Other times the cashiers take the item(s) to a supervisor. Both will give me the stink eye as if I am trying to get away with something. Then overprice it every time. I generally leave it after being treated like a criminal and gaslit on pricing. If I were trying to get any with something I would not bring the untagged items to the attention of the cashiers. If a reseller cannot make a profit then there is no point in buying. I can't remember the last ime I actually saw 75% off. It sucks because more stuff goes to waste and fewer vintage and antique items are purchased and saved for posterity. I have seen so many beautiful, historical items tossed aside, but the collectors that buy from us want a bargain as well. Otherwise they can't afford to collect as much. Now if a store will not price something for me right then and there, want me to come back the next day to search for the same item, then they have just lost a customer. That's a poor business practice. There will be thieves, there always have been, but their policy inconveniences many while trying to save a few bucks. If you push your customers away, then those who steal really didn't make that much difference in profits because you'll piss the majority of your customer base off and they won't come back. As far as shopping at goodwill, the only things I buy at Goodwill are uniform bottoms for my kids since they have to have khaki shorts for school, and sometimes I find nice purses. The shorts used to be like $2 and now they're $4. And the prices are never computerized on tags like this. They just attach a crappy tag to it and write on marker whatever price they feel like it that day. I go on Tuesdays when I can get my senior discount. I do NOT donate to Goodwill, I donate to Women in Distress because it goes directly to the shelter, and the rest is sold in their thrift store but the money still goes to the shelter.

Is something going on at Goodwill??? About two months ago I walk in to my local Goodwill, I go about once a week, and it looked like they had had a major inventory cleaning. I thought "good" they have gone through and removed stuff that had been sitting forever or was broken! Now two months later the shelves are still pretty much empty! About the only deals to be found are in the blue rolling tubs full of merchandise they roll out from the back! Electronics equipment is now virtually non-existent! A few years ago Id walk out with a cart full of receivers, VCR's, turntables, etc, now nothing!!! The books are the same main stream authors you can find at any garage sale or other thrift stores. Toys are just bits and pieces of dollar store playsets.

I'm wondering if after the big cleaning of 2020 when so many were home decluttdring and now not or people have gotten disgusted with goodwill or knowing their stuff is going for bigger bucks online means they'll sell it themselves now

@@Marianne-wm3vs Or the higher quality items are being sold online. Their pricing is such now that if its something you need it can be a good deal. However the days of flipping an item for profit are coming to a close. Like an item that could be flipped for $20 they use to sell for $3-$4, now its $10. Not worth messing with.

Making you come back is the oldest sales tactic in the world, because most people will find something else they want other than the item they originally came in for just to not have a totally wasted trip.

The policy is the same at the Salvation Army. You can not buy it that day. They take it, and you probably never find it again. Sad, but a few spoiled it for the rest of us.

I remember the heat on the Mojave desert but we are still in the 50 degrees here in Anchorage Alaska. The price on the glass was omg but then there are buyers who are deep in debt from paying just to get the item. The past few years I have been paying down debt and selling items and I love seeing the end as I took credit cards away from spouse as it had to happen. Happy days to you 😊😊😊

Not a new policy by any means; the GW’s in my state have been doing this for years, yet some stores will go ahead and price the item immediately, but other stores are firm and won’t. It’s also very rude when employees give customers suspicious looks because they assume that they are the ones who took the tags off. It happened to me once and I was like “ hey, this item is sticky free, no gunk… I think you guys forgot to put a price on it and stop giving me a smirk because your assumption is wrong!” I’m telling you I find so many overpriced items in thrift stores these days that I have decided to buy the new items for the same or less. Thrift stores are going to implode on themselves if they don’t “check themselves before they wreck themselves!”

The afghans you looked at are crocheted instead of knitted. If they are in good shape and nicely done with good colors they easily sell for $30 or more so the prices at that Goodwill are priced a little high for resell.

Murano Zanfirico Ribbons Italian art glass bowl by Archimede Seguso, 1950's MCM -- that was the heavy bowl for $12.99 with the pastel lines, you held up. You said it was heavy glass. That was a Murano piece worth a lot more - like $200

Just because they get inventory for free does not mean that they get store rent for free or free utilities or free insurance or free labor or free trucks to pick up large items and free gasoline to feed that truck or free computers or office supplies or free ... It costs money to sell stuff.

I use to work at Goodwill 10 years ago and we had a dollar sale once a week on items except furniture and new stuff which was half off. And a new company took over and prices went up the roof because people put things on eBay.

Employees also stash & hoard "good merch" for free for themselves or friends at the front very blatantly in many thrift stores in NYC so it' doesn't ever get to the floor!

@@playmorecollectibles6144 I worked at a very small but nice Goodwill. We definitely could not stash anything . We could only purchase items on our days off. They later changed it to you could not shop anytime at the place you worked. I think that is how it is at most of them now. No one ever mentions the vouchers being used for free things or how so many steal from Goodwill because of their mindset that inventory was donated. Most Goodwill stores pay huge rent because they choose good, safe locations, plus employ a lot of people because it is very labor intensive to get merchandise to the floor. I was between jobs when I worked for them, took a job at a bank afterward that paid the same and was not nearly as interesting, lol Like any store it comes down to management. I enjoy the ones that I shop at if not I don't return just as I would any other retailer.
