Mikfik Creek, McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, June 2018 - Mikfik Creek was packed with a pulse of red salmon starting to move upstream. The big bears had not yet arrived so this sub-adult brown bear had, for the moment, the creek to itself. Sometimes the abundance of fish seemed almost too much to handle.

The Bear is rather an unskilled slow hunter.While in the presence of plenty only pick a fish after a lot of failed attempts .Amazing video.

There are so many red salmon going upstream in that shallow water at that moment, the bear is likely distracted but also might be trying for an egg-laden female red salmon which is a preferred catch. In any event, any fish it might "catch and release" will likely be caught again later by other bears and/or fed upon by gulls or eagles, or other creatures if it washes back out to sea. Not much goes to waste....
