www.ted.com It's been 25 years since the first PC virus (Brain A) hit the net, and what was once an annoyance has become a sophisticated tool for crime and espionage. Computer security expert Mikko Hyppönen tells us how we can stop these new viruses from threatening the internet as we know it.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/translate.

What an absolute legend. This is one of the best talks in ages. Some very fascinating points made, and the overhead projector was hilarious. That's also the first time I I've seen a floppy disk in 10 years :D Invite him back for another talk I say!

I agree with his conclusion in the sense that talented individuals should be given more opportunities but global cooperation on policing internet cirme will solve very little since he himself said it was very hard to even know where these attacks are coming from.

Could be totally legit if that site ran some code that gathered the information in real time. The web site could be hosted anywhere, it's the data sources we're interested in. Besides the point, it works enough for a demo. I wouldn't want to rely on Internet connectivity to perform a talk of this nature.

A very good presentation and it was funny at parts as well. I was a little unsure what he meant about criminals, see MPAA for a stupid definition..., but I sense hes not on their side or he wouldnt have added the PirateBay icon on hes slide show of services. I agree with him. We need to make the internet secure for the public. Making it secure for governments and companies is only partially valid. Usually the later goals for "secure" go to far and reduces public access and freedoms.

@MrSprytee That would be both incredibly expensive and result in high latency. Pluss, new viruses and bug exploits may take some time to identify and not be visible (findable) in the code the first time you view (search) it when you don't know what you're looking for.

@Thimmet "I dont know why i need to explain this but it seems i do: you are using a web browser to connect to this site, right? Now isn't that a "static file"?" The content displayed in the browser doesn't necessarily have to come from a static file. It's data received over the h t t p protocol and rendered in the browser (perhaps via some additional client-side scripting but that's irrelevant). It could be generated on the fly remotely and never be stored locally. Comprendez?

@AndreisEntaro the problem is that even if that became the standard then the criminals would find a way to figure out what the next code would be - like an algebra question - working backwards to find the root cause of the change because all of them iwll have it (although they can get pretty complicated) and th eonyl way for it not to is to manually change it each time but that would be almost impossible. It would help for a while but not for long.

@AndreisEntaro I am not saying these things are futile(improving security creates a much bigger path of entry to stop people learning it and dwarfs the problem)but at some point it gets to a point where it costs too mcuh to do so, the point where it owuld be cheaper just to take the fall and continue as we are now rather than continuing to make more complex systems to stay ahead.I think the money would be better put into removing the root of the problem (their gain) than reactionary to slow them

@AndreisEntaro I am not hiding the fact that I am not an expert in the field but I do understand the basic principles of how the two sides opperate, if you say they have these systems that are affordable and effective then that's fantastic but it does not deter the idea that these things are still only a way to postpone it and cover the issue rather than rebuilding in a way where it is impossible for them to do such a thing at all. Listening to experts i fine-but going into tunnle vision isn't

@AndreisEntaro I get that, and that is my problem with the pure security angle. Why not make it so that there is no problem at alla nd that the security never needs to be upgraded because there is no point of breach. Why not limit the money to have to be taken from a specific location or fragment the internet in such a way that only those with "access" can get to it but it isn't linked to the main internet (many governments and places like NASA have things why not money)?

@AndreisEntaro I respect the opinion you give and how logical and realistic it is but I think your focus on their being a purely right/wrong tangible answer and stayign within the biases that you know of "understanding" the problem stops you from seeing possible ways of fixing - I think that is the fundamental thing that keeps this as a problem int he world, as we try and fix it aorund what we are used to now we are stopping ourselves form seeing an answer which isn't so obvious.

A critical component to the new rise in cyber crime is layoffs that started occurring around the time of the market crash in both the networking and cyber security workforce. There are now a great deal of unemployed and disgruntled people with sophisticated skillsets out there, and it seems organized crime is the only sector that's hiring.

@terryfink you're right about there being far more viruses and malware targeting windows, but the fact of the matter is that linux is constantly being developed, tested and fixed by millions of programmers as we speak.whenever a new exploit is found it tends to be fixed in less than a month... M$ couldn't possibly keep up.

Internet is not called Internet because it is international. The historical(mid 70s) use of "Inter" in "Internet" is more to a "interconnected" effect. Internet is short for internetworking and was originally used to describe any network using the TCP protocol. Hence, there where literally several "internets" at the time. It was around the time when ARPANET was interlinked with NSFNET in the late 80s, that the term was used to describe the emerging global TCP/IP network.

@fuunguus Most Finnish people understand English very well, actually. And sure, they didn't teach English back in the very early 1900s, but I don't know how old these "old days" are that mentioned. My grandparents are over 80 years old and they've been studying many different languages, and can speak English rather well. So just clarifying: I wasn't really talking about knowing/understanding English, I was merely saying that the Finnish accent is usually horrible. :)

@AndreisEntaro I never said they were ineffective or at any time did I say how they were useless or down-play the vital role they hold. I am just saying focusing so much on patching a problem and then continuing to do so indefinitely is not a realistic goal or useful to society. I never said you were wrong, never did I attack you or say that there are no ways that this problem is being tackled effectively head on - I am just saying the goal they are aiming for is flawed.

Your friends are wrong. Exploits in the viewer e.g buffer overrun. Automation, e.g. image with a hotspot, you click and good bye. Social Attacks , see Britney naked. Ask your friends if they were taught how to write secure code, how much have they written in the real world. The best way to guarantee you will be hacked, is believing you can't be. Give your mates a whack round the ear, for using a crappy argument from authority instead of google,

One cannot accomplish everything. However, it is no great trial to have a partitioned drive with multiple OS installations. Should we do NOTHING because we cannot do EVERYTHING? No. That would be absolutely silly. Yet, that is the argument you're using. For the record, I do raise chickens in my backyard. The eggs are delicious. But I can't have a farm in my urban backyard, so I am limited to chickens. I cannot have a safe Windows, so I am limited to Windows and a partition of Linux.
