I was crying from the music alone. It is absolutely incredible throughout. I what talent and training in the USSR is beyond me. When she walked through the forest with the glockenspiel arpeggios 8:10 it was overwhelmingly beautiful.

Metaphysical interpretation: the Princess represents the part of human mind that strives for self actualization. The evil queen represents the cruel egoic pattern that despises the idea of awakening. The seven hot dudes represent fulfilled earthy desires, even tho wonderful, not satisfactory to the mind that strives to know itself. The dog represents intuition and great example of what happens when you don't listen to it. The apple represents a tragedy, and death represents acceptance and surrender. The Prince represents another dimension of the same consciousness - the subconscious mind. His search for her is the dark night of the soul. The unification of both kills the ego, the two parts of the mind finally unite in wholeness, love and power.

This soviet cartoon is an absolute master and a stand out amongst other soviet animations I've seen, I know that the technique used in this film was rotoscoping because the animation on the characters seemed to move a bit slower and because they are literally traced over real movements, besides that, the story itself reminds me of Snow White, specifically, the Disney version!

for English speakers: this cartoon is based on the fairy tale by A.S. Pushkin. He wrote his fairy tales based on fairy tales that his nanny read to him as a child. This is probably how The Tale of the Dead Princess was born, with echoes of Snow White. Today he is often accused of plagiarism.

@@michaelmoore6385 because Snow White was rotoscoped and so were the Russian cartoons. I believe it was an easier technique and made animation look realistic.
