A very useful thing to learn is that their's no penalty for recalling a pal. So if they're about to get hit by a big attack, just recall them and send them back out to dodge it.

Also, non-active pals regen hp and also their specific ability if it's available over time. Guess why I still have my mobile turret pal on me.

Miko inspired me to get my own Jormuntide at lvl35! It was not easy but if you learn to pull your pal just before it gets hits it's pretty simple to get it's health low. The problem is catching it has such a low chance, so it's resource intensive and a couple of wrong moves and you're dead.
