My grandma is from Okinawa and turned 101 last March. The Japanese Embassy went to her house to give her a gift congratulating her for such milestone. She plays shamisen, reads books, watches NHK lol.....she got Covid last year and we thought this was gonna be it for her but she survived COVID and now we are planning to celebrate her 102 next year! Okinawas live longer for sure!

I’m from the Ryūkyū islands! (Okinawa) and yeah, we live longer, also the Okinawans who were born in Latin America (specially Peru and Brazil) and all my old relatives are 100+ btw the Japanese who born in Okinawa are not Okinawans (we are indigenous Ryukyuan) . This analogy is the same with the non Hawaiians who born in Hawaii. Ryukyuan people are indigenous, we are NOT Japanese ethnically. And Ryukyuan languages are not dialect from Japanese. The fact that our languages are now similar in some words (and completely different in others) is because of the colonization of Ryūkyū kingdom by Japan. My ancestors were not allowed to talk in their language. Culture and language, we are working hard for revitalize them!

This is very interesting. Is it similar as with Hainu people from Hokkaido?
@lalahana111
@lalahana111 3 жыл бұрын
@@dorotak-k8211 yes Ryukyuan and Ainu are indigenous people. Japan only recognized Ainu people as indigenous but no the Ryukyuan (it’s not convenient for Japanese history as Satsuma invaded our land and it is still in the power of Japan).

Hi ! I am of okinawan ancestry, born and raised in Peru. I was selected to go on a cultural scholarship on Nago Shi for 6 month last year (because of pandemic it was postponed). I have been learning about our culture and would love to get involved in the process of revitalizing it, do you think there are work opportunities in that field? I would love to connect with you!

The two of you are great ambassadors for Japanese culture. You are both very warm and inviting people. And you are motivated to step outside your comfort zone, explore new places and learn other languages, which takes a lot of courage. You are a credit to yourselves, your families and your culture. You should be proud of yourselves. Keep up the great work. And thank you for sooo many great Japanese lessons!!

I have lived in Okinawa for over 30 years. As you discussed, we have "Okinawa time." Everyone is always late for everything. Okinawan people don't live longer, they're just late for their own deaths too! They don't know how to die on time! So, there is such a thing as being late for your own funeral!

I'm Ryukyuan-American, and there are a lot of problems with this video. As another Ryukyuan (Okinawan) commented below, we are NOT Japanese, we are indigenous and have our own ethnicity and culture. Also, Ryukyuan languages are LANGUAGES, not a dialect of Japanese. UNESCO and the international linguistics community recognize our languages as languages. Japanese-only speakers cannot understand Ryukyuan languages. Also, we used to have a reputation of being some of the longest living people, but this is no longer true. Now Okinawa has the highest rate of obesity, due in large part to all the American fast food that you see now because of all the American military bases. There are many problems in Okinawa due to Japanese colonialism (the Ryukyu Kingdom was colonized in 1879) and ongoing US military occupation. Please don't paint Okinawa as some idyllic paradise.
