This video is amazing, such a fantastic learning resource thank you Miku. Your English is really impressive also. I remember when I was in Japan, whenever I screwed something up and frantically apologised (in my very limited Japanese), the guy I was working with (with very limited English) would always frantically wave and say 全然大丈夫 😂 I'm still a student, but once I graduate and get a job I will definitely leave donations on these brilliant videos and support you on patreon! 絶対！

I am now practicing Japanese for my planed visit to Japan next year. Your video is much helpful. Hope I can speak in Japanese without any major problems. I learned Japanese long time ago, about 40 years ago but without practice I forget almost everything, wasremashita... I am native Korean but now live in Toronto, Canada for more than 30 years. Japanese is bit easier to learn for Korean as both languages have lot of simplicities. Hope I can even make Japanese friends while my stay in Japan. Eastern parts of Russia is also my next destination to visit after Japan. Now I am learning Russian as well.

Great video! Little explanation for you, Miku: "I want to buy it as cheap as possible." is the correct version in English. That is because cheap is describing "it", the item. "Cheaply" would be describing the physical act of buying itself, which can't be cheap. Hope that's understandable 😊

Your argument is compelling, but I have to disagree. Both are of course fine and sound quite natural, but ‘cheaply’ feels much more correct to me because this sentence requires an adverb, not an adjective. Compare with: ‘I want to speak smoothly’ vs ‘I want to speak smooth’. I guess there are some American speakers who would use the latter, but for most English speakers I think the more ‘correct’ version is the one with the adverbial form ‘smoothly’. (Also, to respond to your actual comment, I would argue that ‘cheapness’ is entirely a function of the buying process; in fact, the notion of value is meaningless without a buyer. So actually, ‘cheaply’ can and should describe the act of buying itself.) Just my thoughts as someone from the UK.

@@xanderlewis That is where you're off. In the sentence "I want to speak smoothly" there is no direct object to modify. What is being modified is "speak", so we need to use the adverb "smoothly". I understand the confusion, but Miku's sentence does not require an adverb. As I tried to explain in the original comment, "cheap" is the object complement of "it". In order to modify the direct object we need the adjective "cheap". It does not make sense to "buy something cheaply", which would mean "in a cheap manner". Just because a sentence has a verb in it, it doesn't mean you need an adverb. You have to think about which word you are modifying. Hope that makes it clearer.

@@yannikkerig9693 Okay, you’re right to point that out. I only provided that example though as some defence of my impression that most native speakers would rather say ‘cheaply’ in this case. Language doesn’t follow the strict rules you seem to think it does, and I simply disagree with the statement that ‘cheaply’ here is wrong. To be honest, ‘cheap’ sounds very American to me! Nothing wrong with that, but I’m just pointing out that you can say either and still sound perfectly natural (and indeed be correct).

Ahaha! I don't remember the exact situation, but I was in a taxi on my way to the head office of Toyota, and I said "Zenzen daijobu" about something, and I was instructed by the driver that that was grammatically incorrect. I said nothing in reply, but remembered that I had heard this expression from numerous of my Japanese friends.

It seems easy to make simple sentences but joining two independent clauses or joining an independent clause to a dependent clause to create a longer, more complicated sentence is difficult.

Thank you so much for this video! I have one criticism though, that bar with the "example - grammar - test it" on the top of the video distracted me a little from the explanations. I thought I should mention it in case other people had the same problem.
