Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier pour l’art
contemporain present Voci dal Mondo Reale (“voices
from the real world”), an original performance of folk
and traditional songs performed by choirs ranging
from the Caucasus to the Mediterranean Sea and the
Atlantic Ocean.
A unique event commissioned by
the Nomadic Nights - Fondation Cartier’s performing
arts program - and presented throughout the
exhibition spaces of Triennale Milano and Fondation
Cartier’s exhibition Mondo Reale, part of the 23rd
Triennale Milano International Exhibition Unknown
Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries.
The invitation made by Mondo Reale to discover
the unknown in our everyday lives has led to imagine
a Nomadic Night around the human voice as a unique
and ancestral instrument. With the idea of discovery
also comes the idea of discovering anew: what we do
not know is also what we have forgotten.
Directed by French composer and musician Alexis
Paul in collaboration with Italian choreographer
Alessandro Sciarroni - Golden Lion at the Venice
Biennale and associate artist of Triennale Milano
Teatro - over seventy singers bring their songs from
an unknown time to the 20th century; most come
from oral traditions, a few are by known authors.
They come from the various regions of Armenia and Historic Western Armenia and Samegrelo in Georgia, from
Western Moldavia, Transylvania, and Epirus,
to Kabylia in Algeria, and the Azores, as well as from
Northern Campania, Sardinia, and Lombardy. True
to their heritage or breaking with ancestral traditions
in a contemporary twist, the choirs perform songs
about love, nature, exile, and resistance used
in everyday profane or sacred rituals. Their repertoire
extends beyond their countries of origin to make
contemporary borders disappear through the transcultural
language of music.
