Lyrics:
Lover, one lovely day
Love came planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
Through these moments apart
Love come here in my heart
When I recall the love I found on
I could kiss the ground on Green Dolphin Street
Lover, one lovely day
A love came planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart
Love come here in my heart
When I recall the love I found on
Im gonna kiss the ground I found on Green Dolphin Street

That Bill Evans piano intro is a thing of beauty, one of best openings to a jazz recording ever. Really, everyone here contributes equally to making this a sublime listening experience.

I love Bill Evans, like any and everyone else. Beautiful, if not doleful player. Miles knew he had a unique player, a classy player. If I can say this with constructive criticism, although he is a great player, I found that he could never really SWING!, you know, like, say a Hancock, or a Garland, or a Kelly. His 'Affinity' album is wonderful, Sno Peas, Tomato Kiss, Wine & Roses. His style is a more laid back style, though pensive.
@179cpv
@179cpv 7 жыл бұрын
Although there are isolated examples to the contrary that you could point to, I tend to agree that swinging hard was not Evans' strong suit generally. I think Miles realized this as well. It's not an accident he chose Wynton Kelley, not Evans, to play the piano solo on "Freddie Freeloader," which has a funkier blues groove to it compared to the other tracks on Kind of Blue that are more reflective in nature and perfectly suited to Evans' style.

I don't get all the prison references but I will say each solo, Miles, Trane, Cannonball and Bill Evans are mini-masterpieces with each one perfectly encapsulating their respective styles. We are truly not worthy but grateful that these gentlemen thought that we were.

Quick explanation: There’s a very popular anime/manga series called JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and the creator of the series loves western music, so he puts references to western music in the series by naming characters, places, and abilities after various western songs, albums, and bands. The series’ sixth story arc, Stone Ocean, takes place in a prison in Florida called Green Dolphin Street Jail, hence all the prison jokes in the comments. There are likely going to be a lot more comments made soon because the anime adaptation of Stone Ocean was just announced today

Larry Paris no not like that. The original comment was referencing a Manga (Basically Japanese Comics) called Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. In one part a girl in prison tries to fight a crazy priest who wants to reset all time. The series has a huge amount of references to Western music, with characters being named after bands and songs (Aerosmith, Purple Haze, Dio, etc.) The prison where the girl was sent to is called “Green Dolphin Prison,” which was named after this song.

First recorded by Miles Davis Sextet on 26 May 1958 at Columbia Studios, 30th Street, New York and part of a group of three tracks recorded that same day ('Fran Dance' and 'Stella by Starlight') that were included on Miles' LP 'Jazz Track' released later in 1958. There are certainly two if not three studio versions of 'On Green Dolphin Street' circulating. This version (Take 3) is identical to the one later included on the 2009 Legacy bonus disc release of 'Kind of Blue'. However, there is a slightly different version, suspected from the same 26 May 1958 session, that has been included on the Sony compilation CD 'The Real Miles Davis'. There are of course, a number of live versions available, with the latest crop turning up on the highly-impressive 'Miles Davis 'Live in Europe 1967, Bootleg Vol 1' collection.

Notice how Miles gets the end of the first chorus right. 2 ascents, the 2nd a minor 3rd up The last 2 notes are Dnat and Enat (in an Eb tune). Utterly crucial notes, saving the tune from blandness.

I remember back when my eldest now 48 was riding in the tiny basket safely strapped on my 5 speed bike as I wheeled us across the way from Compton on our way to seeing my dying Aunt May and I felt about this song and wondered if being on Green Dolphin Street would look something like this? 40+ years later i realized i was correct ✅... it means being on a dimly lit Street perhaps with a tint of green coming from a strangely lit streetlight quickly on your way to give and receive L♡VE before the moment I'd over and entire cast [of audience and actors] has changed into a brand new now. 🛣

I gulp down the last of my drink and stumble out the door. It’s nearly 2 am. My eyes squint trying to adapt, It´s all blurry, even the streetlight doesn´t help. The sweetness of my whiskey still lingers, My hands instinctively reach for my lighter and smokes. The rain makes it hard to light. I Inhale and slowly exhale, the cloud of smoke does not vanish but just ever so slowly joins the slight fog of the night. A dark smoky shadow near the post of the bridge. I´m drunk...I turn to walk. I still love her. So why does she haunt me...? I still hear her voice in between the conversations. So another day... Another sleepless night... Father Michael was wrong It never was till death do us part...

None of the subsequent 'live versions were as good as this. I suspect the presence of Evans and Adderley was responsible for keeping this so together. Adderley brought the tune to the date, and his blithe improvising over the descending chords is masterful. Evans' plays it as if he wrote it. One of the best performances by the great sextet.

For those of you who were looking for comments from a jazz enthusiast, the intro theme is an Eb pedal with a downward chromatic movement from Eb major triad --> F# major triad --> F major triad --> E major triad --> resolving back to Eb triad. Easy to explain by concept and words, but not so obvious when explained w/ chord symbols: Eb / / /| Ebmin7 / / /| F7/Eb / / /| Emaj7/Eb / / /| Eb / / /|

A GREAT Movie Theme, given a great treatment by what would, in a few months, become the heaviest band in the history of the Jazz idiom, Miles Davis' "Kinda Blue" band: Miles Davis - trumpet Julian "Cannonball" Adderley - alto saxophone John Coltrane - tenor saxophone Bill Evans - piano Paul Chambers - bass Jimmy Cobb - drums This is almost a Cornerstone of Western Civilization.
