Great video. I've started to literally take the horn out of my mouth to help me adjust. I believe Miles advised Coltrane to do the same thing once they started experimenting with modes and Trane had trouble ending solos.

That's a great way to get used to it! I've heard that story about Miles and 'Trane too, I really hope it's true

Miles also knew he wasn't getting paid per note - dude was a straight up gangsta.

GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for providing ways to practice leaving space. I’ve been told to “leave more space” but I’ve never been told how to practice that. Thank you so much

Oh man, being told to do things but not HOW to practice them, is one of my pet peeves. So many educators essentially just say "get better!" I'm so glad you found the video helpful!

use of space/timing/fewer notes but great, unexpected notes occasionally

There's a lot to be said for not saying anything, and it definitely works with music as well. The quiet parts are just as important and can speak volumes.

Very true. I still struggle with the keeping my mouth shut part though!

Agreed 100%. Masterful actors, comedians and orators are also super-comfortable with silences. Easier said than done though. Someone must have once said "those who speak the most often have the least to say". If not, I just said it.

It's not the notes you put in. It's the notes you leave out. (Who said that!) pst... I prefer Lee Morgan👍
