GG is "just another" anime fighter so it probably clashed with BlazBlue and FighterZ and probably lost out barely to BB. Project Justice fills one of the old nostalgia hidden gems people like to put in their list and Skullgirls is just so different in its artstyle which makes it unique. From a casual perspective.

Truth be told, EVO's attendance numbers and Twitch viewership are definitely going to be down significantly after the loss of Smash this year. It's very much what draws the biggest crowd. I'm shocked and kind of offended that Blazblue took Guilty Gear's spot on the list, though.
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat

@@TFGRhinehart Blazblue series as a whole outsold Guilty Gear especially here in Asia where it had been the top anime fighter until Strive, it's the least niche of all anime fighters outside of DBFZ. It's the one anime fighter that actually got even more complex each game instead of getting simplified like each new Guilty Gear release.

@@DrangusKahnhow ISNT smash a fighting game? Stop excluding games that quite literally fit the description of a genre and just specify a sub genre of fighting game. The best way to draw in players for fighting games is to give them characters they already have an attachment to. This history with the character may encourage the player to try to learn and master the character (as they are meant to). I saw a survey for why people don't like fighting games and the majority of people said that they are simply too much effort to learn. I'm sure the prospect of mastering their favorite character keeps people playing.

Yep, it's what got me into fighting games to begin with. The first fighting game I ever played was Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters because I was such a huge fan of TMNT. Eventually I dove into MK, Street Fighter, Tekken, etc. But idk if I would've done it had I not gotten sucked into the fighting game genre by my fandom of TMNT. This is why I appreciate when there's guest characters. A buddy of mine first got into fighting games when Link got put into Soul Calibur. A coworker of mine is a huge horror movie fan and he began playing MK when they added Freddy to the MK9. He's been an MK fan ever since because they keep adding horror movie characters. As you said, it's something that piques one's interest.

Great video as usual, Max. As a casual fighting game player I'll give my top 10 as well. 10) Garou: Mark of the Wolves: While the roster is small, every character feels unique. Gameplay is fluid, looks very stylish. 9) Skullgirls: Good roster. Gameplay's really good considering it's an indie game, the hand drawn animations are really well made. Fantastic soundtrack. 8) Mortal Kombat 9: Arguably the best gameplay in the series. Story mode was pretty cool. Sort of revived a franchise that had taken a few missteps in the previous entries. 7) Gundam Wing: Endless Duel: Only released in Japan. Overall a solid experience. Sound effects and screen shaking make the mechs feel heavy. I'd argue it's the first fighting game to get mecha combat right. 6) Joy Mech Fight: Another Japan-only game. Interesting mechanics. Impressive variety of moves and surprising depth considering it's an 8-bit fighting game. 5) Samurai Shodown 4: Great atmosphere, big roster. Gameplay was good. 4) Tekken 3: Refined the 3D fighting game genre and popularized it. 3) Street Fighter IV: Brought a lot of casuals back to the series. Relatively low skill floor and very high skill ceiling. Massive roster. Gameplay is great. 2) King of Fighters '98: Huge roster. Best gameplay and soundtrack in the series. Easy to learn, hard to master. 1) Street Fighter II: Holds up to this day. Started a lot of trends in the genre, popularized it. It's easy to pick up, has a varied enough roster to appeal to people with different playstyles. Haven't played enough Guilty Gear (never found a character that fits my playstyle) or 3D fighting games (I've played some DOA 4 and 5, some Virtua Fighter 2 and 5, and some Soul Calibur 3) for them to make the list.

They're convinced any other features (no matter how great and plentiful) take away from the core online experience. We already know 3rd Strike, Super 2 Turbo or MVC2 would be at the top, we already know SamSho would be in there somewhere, we already know Guilty Gear would be near the top. One of the easiest yet funnest yet just feel enough fighting games. I could get my casual friends into it and could still get into some really competitive matches with my more fighting game friends as well. From a casual perspective, I got Skullgirls at a time when I was open to learning a game of that style (a fighting game, as opposed to my usual choice of mostly rpgs). I’d played fighting games when I was younger (Clay Fighter and Smash Bros on N64 and later Smash Brawl) but I was too young to understand what I was doing and just had fun pushing buttons. I got Skullgirls as part of a Humble Bundle and it was my proper introduction to fighting games, with my interest developing more around five years later when my friend bought Blazblue Centralfiction and invited me to play it with him at his place. I’ve been a strong casual fan ever since. I love fighting games, but don’t get serious in them due to not having someone to regularly play against in Australia. I’d definitely say Skullgirls was important to me becoming a casual fighting game player at all, so I’m glad it’s shown up on this list and agree with Max’s take on where it should be

Some hardcore gamers don't understand that gatekeeping will ultimately kill what they love. Casuals(I am one) are needed to generate enough revenue to keep franchises going and growing. There needs to be a balance in design and game mechanics that appeals to both sides. A game that only hardcore gamers can get into easily will not do well, but there should be enough content and difficulty to hold players' attention past the initial release.

Injustice 2 was the first fighting game that I really devoted a lot time to and I haven’t put in that much time into a fighting game since. Huh, this’ll be interesting. I’d actually like to see Max do this more often. Just react to fighting game content made by other youtubers. There’s a lot of interesting stuff you can find like why a character or move is good or bad, the history of certain characters in a game or franchise (recently watched a pretty good video on Akuma’s history in Tekken 7) or just list videos like this going over best and worst characters, bosses, games, etc. There’s a lot out there and it’d be interesting to see Max react to it.

I'd love Max to cover some of SugarPunch Design Works' content. But his interest in that content might vary heavily depending on the games he's passionate about. He'd probably love the analysis of character/animation work of Capcom characters, but I doubt he cares about the deeper layers of lets say Guilty Gear music that SugarPunch covers, because Max brushes off anything GG lore related. Shame cause I really like that stuff, but Max is Max and obviously, I cant tell him what to think.

@@leithaziz2716 SugarPunch has incredible content on fighting games and even Monster Hunter which aren't even long videos (anthology of analysis of NRS animation aside). It would be nice for that sort of thing to get signal boosted more, but I'm not really into react content from Max and friends beyond trailers and supers.

@@thelastgogeta Understandable. I think I simply want a shoutouts to SugarPunch more than anything. His channel is massively underrated for the quality he puts out. His content also appeals to the side of me that's interested in the genre beyond just the mechanics and high level meta, and I think that's important for a lot of casual fans. We kinda need more channels like his.

Im suprised Max hasnt heard of Watchmojo before this. I would not say their picks tell the big picture that Max might be looking for. He's got the right idea, but couldnt have picked a worse "Top X" channel. Allthough while I am salty about the lack of some games, this list wasnt that bad. At the very least, it could have been so much worse.

Hey Max! I really love that, while you're obviously very passionate about fighting games and deeply involved in hardcore fighting game communities, you still understand that every game, regardless of genre, NEEDS casual players in order to function. The hardcore are such a tiny, tiny minority of any fanbase that, if those were the only people playing, any game would die.
