"You miss 100 percent of the trains you don't take - Wayne Gretzky" - Michael Scott...you know the new station opening is exciting when even that Acela at 3:52 is "horn-happy" about it. No matter their age, I love double-deckers. Riding on one on the Montauk Branch is my favorite thing about living in eastern Long Island. Never heard of Plimptonville until now...that station looked just as sad as the 1981 version of Amtrak and CT Rail's Windsor Locks as well as Yaphank station on the LIRR's Greenport Branch, which is next door to a farm and government facilities, has a weird approach road, and has a limited schedule. Also, that Sterling Streamliner looks legit! While a shame it's the only one left, glad it's still around as it gives people a reason to visit Pawtucket!

"These diners were so expensive to produce and kinda unreliable that they basically bankrupted the company that built them, but that company also made cars so y'know...it's a good thing" ULTRA-BASED MILES! The reason only 17 were built is because they started producing them in 1939 and then production ceased in 1942 when the US got involved in WWII (which meant more important stuff had to be produced), so production was pretty brief. The Modern Diner is indeed the last one of these and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The roof used to be silver before it was maroon!

Wow, this is some deep-ass diner knowledge - love this!! Yeah, Sterling diners (they also made non-streamlined models; there's a stunning one in Wellsboro, PA) was an imprint of the Judkins company, which made car bodies! That explains why the streamliners really fit in with the aesthetic of the era! But they were a bit shoddily made - as Miles notes, the combination of the curved end with the rectangular windows was a disaster for insulation!!

10:40 - SCR "awkwardly takes a right" because the more direct track goes through wetlands and they aren't allowed to send a diesel locomotive through wetlands which is BS because there's 6 lanes of i-95 that have no problem going through the wetlands. So when the engines are all electric (not sure when) then there's the opportunity for the more direct route.

As a Rhode Islander, I feel like light rail in the state is a mess of mostly unuseful services and could be SO much better. Ideally, we could use our own light rail network and track system moving more within the state. Relying on the (extremely!) outstretched arm of our neighbor to the north's commuter rail is less than ideal and can't be terribly cost effective. Fare windows and machines are hard to come by here, with Providence being the only place (I think) to actually buy in-person MBTA tickets in all of RI. Mobile ticketing makes that mostly a non issue though. All of that said, I'll take the MBTA as my means of getting into Boston any day, and this new Pawtucket station is a step up in convenience from the former/closed/under construction South Attleboro station. While Providence station is closer to me (and Warwick even closer), neither offer enough trains on the right schedules with affordable parking to be of much use.

why hasn't the mbta at least trialled electric trains on this line? it seems extremely inefficient to run older diesels on a fully electrified line, plus MBTA's fleet seems to be in desperate need of an upgrade
@mbrproductions160
@mbrproductions160 Жыл бұрын
Because if they used the catenary, they would have to pay a fee to Amtrak to use their catenary, which would raise operating costs. Also, a good amount of the MBTA’s diesel locomotive fleet (the class of 40 HSP46s) are less than 10 years old.

you might get your wish: the Massachusetts State Assembly is currently considering a bill that will mandate MBTA electrify commuter rail by 2026 (I believe it was 2026?), especially since MBTA has already done studies for the line portions that they want to electrify first, one of which was the Providence Line that serves Pawtucket/Central Falls.

I didn't know this was a thing lol at least they're finishing projects. Wonder if they'll ever fix South Attleboro. I'd give it a 7/10, it's not bad, for the losers who like family guy, you could make fun of it Pawtucket Brewery, if you want to count it. But if you want to be serious, it needs heaters honestly, it works but Chelsea got heaters for the SL3, but not CR, but you can walk around for the heaters. It seems fine. With that said why does the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority serve Rhode island, but not Springfield MA? WORK ON YOUR OWN TERF! I'm glad they're finishing projects vs. starting something and not finishing it, but can we please get something to the other side of Massachusetts? Can we please get more then ONE round trip of the Cape Flyer? I'd love to go to the Cape at 12pm, and come back at 6pm, not leave at 6am and come back at 5pm, and risk missing it like you and Nathan did. Heck can we get year round Cape cod? I don't do sun and beach, I like the cold, I would like to go to the Cape in October, especially for the railway tour, but I can't because the MBTA won't go in October.
