I think the reason I love the song so much is because the genius shift in lyrics towards the end. It’s a complete shift in tone. The first two choruses sound like defeat or regret which is emphasized when “hard as I try” echoes, but in the last chorus the lyrics change to describe determination and hope that she will be someone worthy of love. It’s because of this that “hard as I try” takes on a whole new meaning the third time. It’s no longer “hard as I try” as in I’m failing no matter what, it becomes “hard as I try” as in I’m not giving up on myself. Same lyrics, completely different meanings! Subtle, yet genius.

I love how shes so unapologetically angry, heartbroken, healing, and moving on in this album. Edit: I also love how she could be talking to Liam, herself, us Or all three at once. Going back to listen to the song through those different points of view is very interesting. i’ve never been so into rock music in my life. And this is why song placement is important. I think this song is about her relationships with Liam. He always wanted her to be his exemplary wife, he he wanted her to give birth to his children... but as Miley said she is not ready for family-life. I've missed this musical style - heartfelt and sincere. It brings out the lyrics beautifully. You can hear the struggle - balancing one's own truth and the needs of another person and trying to come to peace with the realization that the two don't match enough to make it last.
