That kit is much better than the cheap survival kits we were issued in the Army (only one I was ever issued) just before going over to Saudi for Desert Shield/Storm. Can't even remember what was in the kit except for the cheap fishing and sewing kits. I am pretty sure I dumped it all and only kept the container that it came in. I already carried a better kit with me all the time. This Marine Corps kit is definitely more useful.

I’m a bike packer and like seeing various survival kits as a check on what I bring with my on my own trips. For the small amount of items, that seems like a lot of bulky packaging. But then again since it’s military, they need to be able to store it longer term.

Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy seeing different kits. I think it’s interesting how military kits (the ones I’ve seen) vary so much. There’s lots of thought that goes into each kit, balanced with the cost per unit, weight, etc. Never stop learning.

Thats the kit i modeled my kit after. I have added purification tabs and a large ferro rod and use a different kind of water bag. Cant recall name of the bag but they are good. Ive added better shelter items and cordage, p cord and bank line. I use a 25L hiking pack and carry the survival in it till i reach the woods then put the kit in my cargo pockets and have most of my gear in the pack. Old habits die hard i guess.

A little survival hint, use the wire saw to get 1/2 way through the log, or branch that you're cutting, and then either smack it against a tree or pull and twist till the wood breaks. Don't waste energy when you can make the environment work for you.

Great overview Top!!! I remember when these were all over the Surplus market about 15-17 years ago… I wish I scooped up a couple back then… but, you do give good ideas on making a similar kit, maybe with some sort of pot (canteen cup?). Stash this a work in the back of the desk drawer for a rainy day… or, supplementary cache in a “secret” location. Hope the tears were tasty!!! Keep up the Fire!

As far as using the saw if you keep it straight instead of letting it kinda wrap around the limb it is more work on the Arms but the saw works better and doesn’t snap. The best way though is to cut a thumb size limb and bend it stretching the saw between the ends by the rings and it work immensely.

Man bro, I got a signal mirror and learned a lil' different on aiming it. I like the hand method, can ya do a vid on using the aiming sticks with it and how to do it upside down. I never heard of either technique. Also, I'm sure someone in the comment section mentioned it but, you can use the tin from the fishing kit to boil the water. You can also use the two spoons from the fishing kit to use as a blaze to mark a tree to help you find your way back to your base camp , you can also use it to help someone find you. You can also use the Tin to signal it looks like. If you have your camp set up and fire going, now your sittin there maybe waiting for your water to boil or whatever. It's a good time to maybe shave down as much as that magnesium bar with the knife provided to help aid in your next fire. Also Stoker, is that knife the old US knife that the boy scouts also used back in the day? They are very sought after pocket knives.

Interesting to see a real-issue kit. It's surprisingly capable, but it seems kind of redundant to an outfitted infantryman or Marine battle belt. Was this originally intended for some other MOS that didn't normally carry a knife, compass, canteen, etc?
